  • After some more ZigBee sensors. Should be pretty good battery life then if 2xAAA? (though bulky).

Also the obligatory question, works with HA via Conbee? (I assume tho if you say is HA compatible any hub should work)

    • Should be pretty good battery life then if 2xAAA? (though bulky).

Yep. Certainly more affordable longer term if you use rechargeable AAA.

Also the obligatory question, works with HA via Conbee? (I assume tho if you say is HA compatible any hub should work)

AFAIK yes. You can make pretty much anything work with HA. I have similar Tuya sensors from another brand (Moe) working fine with HA. I haven't used a Conbee gateway before though.

    • +1

since it is zigbee, it will have better battery life, but shorter range (up to 30m)

wifi will have worse battery life but better range (up to 100m).

I would buy depending where you are putting it.

i put the wifi ones on my detached garage and on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the house. zigbee on the 1st floor.

      • I've bought a few zigbee routers to put around the house just to help with extending range. Anything that is permanently powered generally acts as a router (weird name cause it sounds like a hub but it's more like an extender).

Think lightbulbs, power strips, power meters, etc..

        • Theoretically, Hue Bulbs should work as 'routers' (which as you say really means extenders), as do Xiaomi sockets. I've had trouble with some some other ZigBee devices though. What have you found works?

          • @CacheHunter: I've had a Hue bulb as a router for a while now but have had constant problems with it disconnecting and messing up a bunch of other things as a result. Yesterday I replaced it with an Ikea bulb and configured directly HA via Zigbee, so will see if it works any better.

            • @iMacca: I bought a couple of these recently: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/tradfri-signal-repeater-3040041…

They've made my Zigbee network far more robust, without depending on whether someone accidentally turns off a light at a switch :-)

              Really good product I think!

              • +1

@encoderboy: An alternative is their smart socket which is the same price and also function as a repeater.

              • +1

@encoderboy: That product page has always annoyed me. 😄 They've pictured the USB power supply but not the actual ZigBee repeater part that plugs in to it.

They are good though, and handy that the USB port is passthrough on the repeater so can use for something else.

          • @CacheHunter: Hue Bulbs apparently make pretty poor routers so I'd likely avoid them. Ikea repeaters are excellent (and relatively cheap). I've had nothing but trouble with the Ikea Smartsockets - I had two, both broke in a matter of weeks.

          • @CacheHunter: Im currently using tuya smart plugs and a one power strip.

I do currently have about 60 9W Downlights and 12 GU10 bulbs from Tuya, but they are WiFi. I think as they die ill replace them to zigbee. I dont think you can get nuch better mesh network than that! Lol

      https://zigbee.blakadder.com/deconz.html

Could not find CoRui in this compatibility list.

EDIT: Looks like it might be this Tuya one: https://zigbee.blakadder.com/Tuya_ZD06.html

Anyone see what the model number is?

  • Thanks Clear, bought 10 to try out. I'm curious to see how long these last compared to the CR2032. Hopefully they play nicely with eneloops. I bought some other Tuya stuff and it did not like 1.2v.

    • I believe 1.5V is usually the minimum. 1.2V will report low voltage or drain too quickly.

      • Unfortunately all rechargeable batteries are 1.2v. Hopefully the tolerance is higher because it takes 2 batteries :)

        • +2

          Time to buy some Energizers.

          • @Clear: Ah didn't even think about lithium! So used to NiMH! But what will i do with all my eneloops? :(

          • @Clear: Do you mean non-rechargeable ones? I can only find rechargeable Energizers at 1.2v. Happy to be proven wrong.

            • @octleons: You can get 1.5v lithium rechargeable batteries in AA size, no name brands though. Since they regulate the output they'll put out a constant 1.5V until they are flat and stop so you won't get any warning they are going flat.

Probably more an issue if using with door locks than sensors I guess.

    • Did you buy in one transaction multiples? Shipping is charged after 2 units, so it's cheaper to purchase individually which is meh.

  • What are people recommending as a zigbee gateway to go with these.
I will connect it to HomeAssistant.

    • Conbee is probably the way to go in terms of stability, range and playing nicely with HA.

    • +5

went from Conbee to Sonoff and have had much more stable connection and easier setup.

      • Got much better results with my Conbee after putting it on an extension cable.

Have a mix of Xiaomi, IKEA, Smartthings and Phillips connected to it and all pretty stable.

        • +1

Which integration are you using? I had issues with my whole network dropping off and needing re-pairing with Zigbee2MQTT and Conbee II (with a USB extender). I also moved to Sonoff and have had a much better experience. I’ve seen recently Z2M are recommending people downgrade their firmware of the Conbee to a ~2 year old version.

          • @Hargain Bunter: ZHA. I do get a Hue switch or Xiaomi temo sensor needing repairing every now and again but nothing that bad.

        • Noob question, but: I have a Philips He Hub (~2016 era) which I thought talked Zigbee. Do I need a separate Zigbee device I can I wrangle the Hue Hub into talking Zigbee via Home Assistant?

          • @trawg: You won't be talking ZigBee between hub and Home Assistant but it can control your Hue devices via the hub

            • @bamzero: Yeh I have HA already set up controlling my devices. Was just wondering if I can talk Zigbee from HA via the hub to devices like this or if I need to buy Conbee/whatever.

              • +1

@trawg: Ah ok, so you're wanting to know if you can connect these ZigBee sensors to your Hue hub?

Yes Hue uses ZigBee though I don't think Tuya devices are compatible with it.

There's a list of known supported devices here

                • @bamzero: Ah awesome thanks, I'll take a look!

… at $6 for this thing it's tempting to yolo and test it, but I've done that with tons of other stuff in the past and it so often doesn't work or needs a ton of mucking around to get it going so I'm a bit leery of wasting time!

    • +1

If this is the correct one, maybe only Deconz compatible?

    • +5

Sonoff is the best value dongle and I believe newer and higher performing than the expensive Conbee II anyway.

    • sonoff dongle works very well and super cheap

    • +1

I just bought the Homeassistant Skyconnect from Seeedstudio website for 29.99 USD (~47 AUD) this week. It supports Zigbee currently but will be enabled for Matter/Thread as well in future. Not sure how stable it will be but hoping that it would just do fine since it's a Homeassistant product. Fingers crossed :)

      • Came here to recommend this too. I preordered one when they were first announced and I have just moved my whole network over from a Conbee II. No real difference in reliability yet, but one thing I will note is that it seems like it's harder to get the SkyConnect to initially pair devices via other routers. Seems like it will HEAVILY favor itself as the first connection point, to the point where I had to bring most of my sensors close to the SkyConnect to get them to pair. After a day, they re-meshed to a local router, but initial pairing was a problem.

      • Just ordered one of these thanks!

      • thanks for the link to SeedStudio, saved some money there!

    • What is the difference between SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle-E & Dongle-P models?. Is it worth paying the extra $5 for Dongle-E?

  • +2

    Will it work with Smartthings?

  • Bought a few as AAA battery is much cheaper and longer lasting than CR2032 OR CR 2450.
My ghetto external AAA holder has worked well on my Sonoff sensor and made that door sensor actually reliable and function correctly.

    • Bought a few as AAA battery is much cheaper and longer lasting than CR2032 OR CR 2450.

I bought my Xiaomi door sensor in 2017 and installed it on my main entry door that's used every day. It's a tiny sensor so uses a lithium coin cell. No idea which one as I have never changed it.

I bought a few Xiaomi motion sensors in 2018 which are in daily use. I've never changed the CR2450 cells in them either.

I'm very satisfied with the battery life of those lithium coin cell sensors. They'll never leak too.

Found this one…cheap as well. Just costs AU $3.84.

    • That one is wifi only.

  • Will this work with Xiaomi Gateway 3?

  • Bit of a noob but will this work with my Pi 3 running home bridge?

    • +1

have you got a zigbee stick & running a coordinator (zigbee2mqtt, homeassistant (ZHA))? if so yes, if not then no

  • actually needed one for the garage door, thanks op :)

  • Is it compatible with xiaomi's gateway?

  • Great thanks,
A good deal on motion sensors for single and better for 2

Good price, but this is positively massive and that would give me pause. It's visually offensive.

    • +2

From an AliExpress review It's not too big.

      • -1

Compared with the Mijia Door & Window Sensor, it's pretty big.

That one measures up at 4 x 2 x 1 cm. This one looks to be about twice as large

        • +2

          Simple reason. AAA batteries.

          • +2

@Clear: I understand the reason, just saying it's big and people should accept that fact before they buy it and stick it on their doors.

The Mijia ones are not exactly unobtrusive in the first instance.

            • @Nuggets: Yes Xiaomi ones are nicer looking but these are much cheaper. After a while you forget they're there. Just place high up or low down outside of your typical field of view

  • If you buy more than one, then delivery charges applies…🤔

    • +2

      Individual orders

    • +2

This is common, just place multiple orders for a single unit.

They will come as one package :D (most likely)

  • How easy are these apps to set up?

I only really want it to show me if a door is closed really.. Nothing too fancy

  • +1

For any considering this, keep in mind that Tuya is notorious for low reliability devices. Many people in the automation community will say it's just not worth your time to buy Tuya-compatible devices.

    • I have one of these and it's been far more reliable than any of the Xiaomi ones I've installed.

  • I have google home and apple tv for homekit purposes , How this will integrate to both hubs ?
What router/hub I should buy to hook these to apple TV and google home ?

  • Another brand is 'notion'. I'm using that and it's good :)

    https://getnotion.com/

    • At $40USD for the sensor + $10 for the magnet component for door/window sensor it seems in a slightly different league to this. Though, I imagine you can just use a cheap magnet too.

Also no mention of it on zigbee2mqtt or anything, so seems like 3rd party hubs are not an option. Deal breaker for me personally.

      • I know. It is not cheap!
It was included in my Home Insurance.

  • Assuming these cannot be used outdoors for a front gate? Would there be any reliable way to waterproof it so that 1. it still worked correctly making good contact with the magnet side and the zigbee signal wasn't blocked, and 2. was openable such that I could change the batteries every few months?

    • Try plastidip. You'll need to respray it when you change the batteries. That said I have one of these on my laundry door, I installed it in Feb and it's still on its original set of batteries. I have Xiaomi sensors I installed at the same time that have already gone through their original sets.

    • +1

You could open it up and move the electronics into a weatherproof enclosure like this.

    • +1

I literally just used duct tape on my letterbox sensor. Rain doesn't have enough pressure to squeeze through small gaps anyway and the sensor isnt submerged. I think I'm using the Xiaomi sensor. I tried having the sensor inside but the letterbox is steel and shields all signal. So it's an ugly hack job on the outside. Function over form.

      • Yeah, I've heard this works fine. I've also heard others paint it with nail polish for a nicer look, but that seems more of a mission when changing batteries.

      • thats awesome, thanks

  • Price wise it's very reasonable. But I suppose if they needed to use 2xAAA batteries, means technology-wise they couldn't compete with Aqara's contact sensors which use only one coin battery and lasts a year at least. And it looks bulky in comparison.

    • +1

But I suppose if they needed to use 2xAAA batteries, means technology-wise they couldn't compete with Aqara's contact sensors which use only one coin battery and lasts a year at least.

I bought and installed this Aqara sensor in 2017. I have no idea what cell it uses as I've never had to change it since I installed it then. Amazing.

      It's not $6.45 anymore though!

One day someone will make a window open sensor that has a self charging solar panel on the back… kinda like the Samsung remote controls

    • After the solar conversion rate is more efficient

  • Be aware of some cheap products on Ali. Last time I bought a few Wifi Tuya sensors. The motion sensor died after some months. The use was ok but expected 1s-2s delay for the first attempt of very period of time either via Tuya app or HA due to it required to connect to the Tuya cloud unless know
how to bypass their cloud. The humid/temp sensors took ages to reach the environmental temp, hence not reliable.

Anyone can name their store whatever they want on Ali. The term ”Official" is bias. Best to check the certificate of the seller company, followers, and store items, etc. I bought a few 1Tb SD cards for $10 each from the Huawei Official Store, called them a scam. There's a Linux Tech Tip video about this.

The delivery time is around 2 week time but the super economy may take months.

The trick is to stick with a more well-known brand and seller for less hassle.

    • bought a few 1Tb SD cards for $10 each from the Huawei Official Store, called them a scam.

Well that's a no brainer. $10 for 1TB cmon really.

      • Well I bought it on purpose to test. It is usable until it reaches few hundred GB then currupted. And yes it says official store and Huawei logo on the cards. Ordered first, watched the video about the scam on the same day, did not request for a refund

        • You're right about store names. Anyone can put Official there. Seller feedback less than 95% is usually a good indication that they're less legit sellers.

          • @Clear: Ali really needs to do something against this. Only some know and some victims got refunds. It's not easy to know or show proof of defective of this type of items

  • I'm new to zigbees and hubs. I have a Xiaomi Mi Smart Home Hub with Zigbee. Can I add these devices to that hub or do I need a brand specific one?

    • No, they are locked to their own eco system.

  • Works with hubitat?

  • Anyone have any idea when we'll see matter door sensors?

    • +1

Matter is overrated. For proper home automation you do need to drill into the details and therefore setting up a wifi, ZigBee or zwave network should suffice. Matter is more for the general consumer and will take quite some time to evolve.

      • and therefore setting up a wifi, ZigBee or zwave network should suffice.

And that is what Matter aims to resolve - the fragmentation and complexity. Hopefully they succeed.

Matter is more for the general consumer and will take quite some time to evolve.

That's true too. It's still way too early for it to … matter. In a few years it'll probably be the standard everyone goes for.

        • Here's hoping it's not just another standard

          • @NigelTufnel: It has the backing of all the major tech companies unlike any previous standard so it certainly has a good chance of actually happening. Zigbee was probably the closest but fragmentation didn't do it any favours.

      • Overrated seems like a strong thing to suggest… I dont have any zigbee stuff atm but a bunch of nest hubs, seems like a no brainer to wait for the matter stuff.

        • +1

I suspect one will be waiting a while for a decent variety of matter devices and certainly don't expect them to be cheap on the offset. Perhaps by 2024 they will become more readily available?

  • I got a message from the seller:

    Dear friend,
we must to say sorry for you first.
when we prepare to ship the item to you,
we found that there is quality problem with the item .
we need to find a new supplier
to save your time, could you choose the reason"other" to cancel the order?
then we will accept it to quickly refund you.

Something tells me they don't want me to say I'll wait for the new supply.

    • +1

I had this happen to me on Ebay with Imou. The problem is, if it is not shipped within xx number of days, they get a black mark against them hence they would rather the order is cancelled. In my Imou's case, and as I wanted to wait, they adjusted the order and shipped a $2 item (free) which cleared that order. They kept my original order credit until actual item came back into stock (a couple of months). A new order was created and item received (after I reminded then with email thread).

In this instance, I don't think it's not worth your hassle asking to wait for such a small savings, especially with AliExpress.

    • I got this message and pushed back - they'd already got me to cancel once and reorder. Magically, they suddenly had stock to send. Suspect they weren't wanting to honour so many at this discount.

    • +1

I got this message too but I ignored it. They eventually “shipped” it but it was delivered to Albury even though I’m in Sydney, over 500km away - even Auspost isn’t this bad. I feel like they put in someone else’s tracking number and then claim it was lost in the mail and claim it’s not their fault. Now they won’t refund me the full amount. What a dodgy practice!

The most annoying thing is I ordered 6 of them and have to reply to 6 individual disputes!

      • My order was delivered to Joondalup, WA last week ( correct address is in the ACT). Waiting for a response to my 'order not received'.
