Would You Donate to People Who Haven't Taken out Travel Insurance?

Another day, another non bargain related question…or 2.

Perth man’s Bali holiday turns to horror after brutal mugging incident

Interested in people's opinion regarding holidays and travel insurance. I see various posts and news articles about people that have travelled overseas and end up in hospital with $$$ expenses and starting go fund me pages and donation drives. The articles never mention travel insurance and it always makes me annoyed. Does nobody else sit there thinking 'you got yourself into this mess'?

Why would people support someone else's bad decisions to not get travel insurance? If they end up with debt, wouldn't that be a good life lesson? Maybe the people donating are just kinder than me.

Do you think travel insurance should always be purchased? International or domestic too?

I feel like the people without insurance that I see in these situations (obviously not the whole cohort) all seem to visit Bali, Vietnam and south east Asian countries.

Is it a certain kind of person that doesn't think, have responsibilities and doesn't consider the risks or am I unfairly labelling them all together as immature, impulsive?

If you can't get insurance due to medical etc that's understandable, still travel. But otherwise should insurance be a prerequisite for visiting certain or all countries?

Anyone got any crazy stories about insurance costs or situations?

  • No one wants to own their own poor decisions these days.

  • always some idiot looking for a handout after they choose not to do something to secure them in the future.

They probably spent all their savings on that trip too, sounds like a real smart person.

  • Travel insurance is relatively inexpensive so should always be purchased unless you have it already with a credit card etc.

Even domestically it includes cover for rental vehicle excess for less expense than taking up a zero excess option with the car hire companies.

  • I don't think I've ever purchased travel insurance… a few times paid for everything with a decent credit card that I'm guessing covered it all. I've travelled a lot as well.

I am traveling soon, and I'll look into it further since it seems like a no-brainer to many on here.

for short trips it really isn't very expensive, and now that you've said you're considering it you've kicked the universe into action and not taking it out would be like tempting fate.

In the last 10 years it was only the lockdown period where I didn't have an annual policy. There are usually good sicount codes floating around on OzB. For me it is worth it as I'm taking expensive sporting equipment with me, and cameras/computer. But even to countries where we have reciprical Medicare rights, consider how hard you can get stung by car rental companies, a good travel insurance allows you some buffer of avoiding their excessive daily insurance rates because if anything happens it can be palmed off to your travel insurance. Getting hospitalised might be a very rare occurence, but a door ding or a windscreen chip that they sting you for isn't so remote.

as always, "read the PDS and consider your personal circumstances" :)

      • Most likely taking it out, 4 week family trip, US with 4 days in Mexico… Just have to weed out the dodgy ones.

who tf is donating $200 to some random bloke on gofundme that started a fight in Bali?

  • Interest rates and $6 bag of chips, im not donating to anyone.

I grew up in a household where i was told if you cant afford to insure it (car/boat/house/holiday) then don't buy it.

I don't have a heart of stone but bailing people out fails for a lesson to be learned or conveyed to others.

  • I travelled a lot in my 20s but all I think about when I look back is how stupid I was not to get insurance. Thankfully nothing happened but I'm still very uncomfortable thinking about it. Such an idiot.

Most credit cards offer complimentary travel insurance when you pay for hotels/flights with it….and even if they don't there are plenty of ways to get it for "free"

There is really no excuse not to get it

  • +1

Bit out of context, but "… Mugging Accident … " does not match with " … a broken leg, bleeding on the brain and a suspected fractured spine … ". Something has been embellished for the gofund me page.

“One day I’ll get to call this place home,” I wonder if he has changed his mind …

    • Plot twist (or truth): "mugging" was orchestrated for media attention and donations are actually being used to fund his retirement in Bali

    • see the updates below

  • I really don't understand this discourse.

What happened to the guy is not really travel related, it's a cancelled flight or a skiing accident
or a crashed rental car, the dude was assaulted and seriously injured.

He doesn't "deserve" this for the sin of not purchasing travel insurance.

    • It is travel related - if the same thing had happened in Australia, Medicare would cover a lot of the cost. If you’re in a foreign country and ANYTHING happens, you are personally liable for the cost, hence why you get insurance.

No one here denies that what happened to the person was terrible and not their fault, but having others pay for an avoidable cost is where the problem lies.

      • +1

Actually it turns out it was his fault.

  • Almost all gofundme's and similar requests for donations are scams in one way or another. Either:

    • The whole thing is a scam

    • Its exaggerated and not a big deal

    • They made a mistake with insurance cover and could spend money or get a loan to resolve it, but don't want to.

    • They took a calculated risk and didn't get insurance etc and then realise they don't want to pay the cost as it was bigger then expected.

When you consider that most people would never ask for money, but certain types of people will ask for money when they don't need it, its silly to donate because you'll most likely be donating to people who don't need it.

  • Everyone has said what I already think.

Basically, travelling is like owning a car. You don't just pay for the car, you need to afford everything that goes with it, otherwise you will have to deal with the consequences.

He has no sympathy from me.

It's like those people that live in flood / bushfire prone areas that go on the news and cry because they've " lost everything ".

Too bad. You rolled the dice and lost.

    Get insurance.

If you can't, don't live there.

  • I think these people should be fined if the government has to provide assistance overseas and they failed to take reasonable steps to mitigate potential loss — for example taking out travel insurance.

    well this aged well

I can't believe it's that easy to gain compassion and fool people on the internet that they managed to rake up 24k worth of donations.

      I can.

  • Robberies/burglary happens all the time in Bali especially near Kuta. The amount of their theft and near miss robbery stories I've heard from just people I know is kind of worrying.

So turns out it was a motorcycle accident
And this is why we can't have nice things.

Now he just looks like a right mug.

    • +2

Yep - came here to say the same.
This was no mugging - that was just a story for sympathy cash.
Its easier to get people to give to an innocent victim than to someone who was driving while seriously intoxicated.

Guess I was right for calling him a bozo in my earlier comment.

White guy + SE Asia = High chance of being a bozo.

I've reported the fundraiser on the page and I suggest others do the same.

  • Ah yes judging by his picture he looks like a nice young man who would never lie…. Lol

  • Considering the majority of credit cards include travel insurance, I'm not even sure how it's possible to get in such a predicament.

That Gofundme now seems to be a pretty classic case of fraud.
They have attempted to gain a benefit by deception.
Someone should be prosecuted - will send a message about this type of thing.

Lol what a drop kick got drunk and crashed his scooter..
