  • Fine for Coles and other Optus resellers?

    • Optus locked phones usually are AFAIK. Seems easy to get free unlocks from Optus if you have an existing account. That might be the case for new accounts too judging from remarks in the previous $49 Optus realme C21 deal from Optus chat. If phones are easily returnable to target you can usually obtain the IMEI from the box and leave it unopened. A $1 recharge on Optus Flex might still be sufficient for starting an account but that might have changed.

  • +1

My experience is only Telstra handsets that are not compatible with other Telstra resellers.

    • Except BOOST I believe, by special arrangement? Can someone else confirm that?

      • Yes boost is available if that's locked to Telstra. Unsure about Optus but Vodafone-locked not compatible with Kogan. I suppose things shall be the same.

  • ooh i can finally afford to upgrade to 5g

While this is probably good value for the price even without knowing what CPU it contains (are they ashamed to tell us?) do bear in mind that this phone and usually anything with the Optus X (pronounced ecch!) prefix usually has bands removed that Optus don't use. Happily none are missing for Telstra on 4G, so its probably good enough for them while 5G is still in its infancy but the lack of 850Mhz is something I'd be wary about if my intention was to use it on Vodafone but I must confess my ignorance as to how much 700Mhz Vodafone has rolled out so far

    • Good to know, cheers.

      • If you specifically want a phone that will work on other networks the Telstra locked Vivo Y55 5G looks fair value if you can manage to get one at the currently published price of $199 but its listed as "Temporarily unavailable." (If its not available, why isn't it cheaper!)

Compare the band support with the Optus phone:
        3G 1/2/4/5/8
        4G 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/20/32/28/38/39/40/41
        5G 1/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40/41/78

Seems like that would be good for international travel.

        128GB of storage too.

Telstra locked phones don't always work on their MVNOs.

Telstra too nobble the band support on their Telstra branded phones. ZTE seems to be the willing accomplice in both cases.

I haven't noticed Vodafone nobbling their band support in recent years (heh, I remember when they sold models that didn't even support all their own frequencies) but all the carriers disable the dual SIM support on their locked phones.

        Sometimes it is reversible.
