iPhone Screen Replacement - Face ID No Longer Working

Hi All,

I had an iPhone 11 that had a cracked screen and poor battery. I thought i'd replace the battery, both speakers and screen on my own (more for knowledge and tinkering).

After replacing the iPhone no longer has Face ID.

Doing a bit of sleuthing I believe that this is a hardware issue however then found information that software updates (iOS 16 onwards) fix this.

Anyone else dabble in fixing iPhones care to share some insight?

Apple doesn't like DIY or third party repairs. So they disable shit on purpose if the hardware IDs don't match up.

    • So I see - so can't do it no more?

Louis Rossman has heaps of videos on Apple's anti self repair crap.

Sorry, I'm not up to date with the latest. They were some recent wins in the right to repair movement so maybe the latest iOS supports it but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Apple don’t disable Face ID for replacing the screen on an XR, nor do you get a message coming up about it being not genuine.

You most likely damaged your earpiece speaker flex removing it from the camera locating plastics. Requires very gentle persuasion with heat and alcohol to soften the adhesive

An update won’t do anything if it failed exactly the same time you replaced the screen.

The only other extremely unlikely issue is that the screen is faulty and not allowing the camera to operate correctly, however I’d expect it to just not recognise your face. If it’s prompted you it that there is an issue with the Face ID camera it’s definitely damaged

    • I also replaced my earpiece - perhaps this had something to do with it?

I feel I must comment here.

This is actually useful advice, pertinent to the topic, and helpful to the OP.

Also, no off-topic rant about Apple/Kogan/Tesla's business practises.

      Well done, Rodger!

  • you will also might notice that true tone and possibly auto brightness is disabled now…. this was on an iphone 14,13, and 12 not sure if the 11 had this issue.

apple has screwed a lot over this and i think spoofing the id of OEM devices onto third party devices doesnt work.

this sort of thing is starting to bleed into other manufacturers, samsung has done this as well, as soon as you change the screen to a third party device then it restricts functionality…. it was a mobile phone but cannot for the life of me remember which one.
