      A noob question about SMR: why do they need to have a bigger head when writing data than the reading head?

      If they used the same size as the reading head, then there would be no SMR/CMR - all disks will have CMR performance and SMR storage density

    Generally avoid SMR for NAS purposes. SMR is fine for single drive archival or storage purposes, but CMR is what you'll typically want for NAS or multi drive RAID configurations.
