Not the absolute cheapest it's been, but a good price given all the Christmas and Boxing day deals have passed.

they're great for old tvs with shitty OSes
Or new TVs with shitty OSes. I am using one with my LG C2 as WebOS is 🤮
I like WebOS on my C9, it's not perfect but i found it better to use than my GoogleTV because then its aware it's an OLED and any paused app will go to screen saver.
Would be handy if GoogleTV had a "using OLED TV" function which added screensavers.
@D1Vad: Ambient mode still kicks in when apps are paused, which is akin to the gallery thing LG does. It's just set at 5 minutes I believe.
There used to be a hidden screensaver settings menu, where you could adjust the timeout, that was accessible with screen saver apps, but they took that out…
I have a Sony TV from 2009. I don't have a built in Chromecast. I would never get rid of it as the build quality is excellent.
Mine has it built in but the CPU and memory are woefully slow. I was thinking about getting this because hopefully it will be faster and more powerful.
Look for someone trying to offload a brand new one on the forums or fleebay
Worth it IMO, I was in the same boat as you.
Chromecast = Device
Goolge TV (previously Android TV) = OS
Smart TV = TV that can connect to Internet for Streaming contentNo, everyone doesn't have built in "Chromecast" in their TV 🤓 I personally got one for Disney+ as it's not on a couple of my TVs, one of which is brand new.
I rock it on a dumb PC monitor connected to a bluetooth soundbar.
Also good to take on holidays where you dont know whether accommodation has smart tv's, or dont want to use your login on smart tv's and forget to sign out.
Do these now work with captive portals that hotels often use? From memory (with the gen 2 chrome cast), they wouldn't log in.
@Morien need to do a workaround with
mobile hotspot and suchUse a travel router like the ever-popular mango. It stays connected to the hotel's WiFi and works with captive portals. All your devices connect to the travel router and once the initial captive portal setup is complete (using a smartphone, tablet or computer), all your devices will connect to the internet without having to do the captive portal step again.
Yes, did this on a recent holiday, it shows a notification where you can do the captive portal stuff
Without the workarounds the others mentioned?
Ignorant comment for multiple reasons, however his comment wasn't even talking about international travel where his accounts likely wouldn't work - this is more relevant for domestic travel - eg. an Airbnb an hour from your home with an outdated TV.
I have the HD version and the Amazon Prime app does not work on it.
That's strange - works fine on my 4k ones
I dont have the HD, only the 4k version. But using on my old 2015 Sony TV (1080p only) I had the same problem with the Amazon Prime app.
Turns out Amazon Prime App had some additional HDMI security requirements, so I had to change to a HDMI port that had this function, and everything works perfect now. Strange not all HDMI ports on the TV include all these features…
Hopefully you have the same problem and can fix the way i did.
I'll try swap around the ports, thank you
fingers crossed, let me know how you go
Works fine on my HD version.
Would this be an upgrade over a Xiaomi MiBox S 4K?
The one I have is starting to slow down and was wondering if this or something else would be a good upgrade.
I've recently upgraded mi / vtv boxes to these - they do have a more powerful SoC and are faster/smother with better software support. Also some little things are nice, like Dolby Vision and IR blaster.
I'm happy with the bump up.
$65 at Mydeal with the code SHOPAPP.
Or with code STOCKTAKE
That's 1080p, the Amazon one is 4k
Can I have suggestions?
For Kodi or similar on an old 1080p TV.
$65-$75 price range.Chromecast 4K
Fire Stick 4K Max
H96 Max x4 or similar Chinese box with S905x4 SoCif it is 1080p tv then take the HD version which goes on sales sub $50 often.
My concern is decoding various video formats and running apps, my noob logic is that if it's a 4k stick it'll have a better SoC and therefore be smoother in general.
Do you think 1080p sticks would provide a smooth experience with apps like kodi and plex?
Good thinking to consider this but the SoC is actually newer on the 1080p version. the new version (HD) can decode AV1 in hardware, while the 4K chromecast can't.
Does this support casting in dolby atmos? E.g. tidal, netflix, amazon prime vid?
Pricematch Officeworks for $71.25 https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/google-chr…
called officeworks and they said it should be fine. Thank you
Has anyone setup one of these without a home network service? I have a couple of spare newish WiFi routers and a PC. I am currently using a mobile hotspot off my iphone for home internet purposes.
All I want this Chromecast for is to Airplay YouTube Premium downloads to my 10 year old TV via the iPhone. Not interested in streaming services.Maybe just get a Chromecast Ultra? Cheaper and should do that as a bare minimum.
Yes. I played around with it last night and the Chromecast 4K needs a network connection to function. Works directly from a hotspot but chews data. Ah well, fun to play around with local networks and such
Its $65 at checkout with another $10 off
What's the additional $10 off you refer to?
I mean it's $5 at checkout with another $70 off too if my maths is correct? :/
Amazon has it for $75 currently. But it said another $10 off at checkout when you are paying. Which brings it down to $65 when you make the payment..I just bought it 2 hrs ago
Ah yes. I can see that now. Save $10 at checkout when you click the option.
OP - maybe update the post so others are aware?
EDIT: there's a duplicate post now that states this…… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/750505
