        Thanks Mod.

      • That search URL is also broken. Could you please help fix that as well Mod.

        • The search only works on Desktop, and not on mobile.

I was damn close just yesterday to heading to Bunnings to buy a hex key set. Are these really the ducks nuts and worth waiting a few weeks for?

    • If you don't want to wait, the 9 piece set is around $38 from AU store.

EDIT: oops, $38 is for the short hex key set.

    • +2

Whatever you do, don't buy Craftright. It isn't so much the keys themselves, it is the holder. Good holders that don't drop keys, break clips etc. are worth it. The Craftwright (and some other brands) use plastic holders that break easily.
Have 2x sets of Wera, standard and colour Hex-Plus, good tools, the multi-colour version with the coating however makes the set bulkier to carry. These bare keys are slimmer. Bondhus though are still better from a strength perspective for higher torque applications.

      • +1

Agree about Bondhus. I'm a big fan of quality tools and only buy the very best. I have two sets of Bondhus keys and find them to be top notch.

        • Another vote for Bondhus - work great. Case is annoying AF and they constantly fall out - but…….thats a me problem

          • @Fergy1987: Ive used bondhus hex stuff for years, the ones with the handles are probably the best hex drivers available, if the metal is the same on the sets, theyre bound to be great.

          • @Fergy1987: Agree, the case is crap

    • +2

      Let's find out?

(dunno if Todd has tested the exact same product as here)

      • That is a decent Allan key comparison (TLDR: Bondhus = average, Wera/Wiha = best performance)

I'm not sure why the chosen large bolts didn't fit as well with Wera, because I find the fit to be excellent. The small key test is better https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTBiPjCeVwI&t=609s

The ball end on the Wera is very strong and super useful and I am going to chuck all my old sets when I get another stainless Wera hex-plus. They are really good for hard-to-reach areas.

      • Well spotted! 3x the price of good quality craftsmen per his testing.

      • +2

I love that channel so much

    • they're Wera niiiice for the quality they offer.

    • I bought these recently after using no name stuff most of my life - They're brilliant, worth every dollar. Dropped my frustration levels doing projects about 90%

    • nope

    • +1

Nah nothing real special. I bought a set of coloured keys several years ago and wouldn't go back to plain ones.

      • Colour coding….. now that's a useful enhancement if you use them often.

    • +1

Good quality indeed. However I rarely use my wera keys. Why? because other options are better for my needs

      1) DUKA RSI rachet screwdriver kit - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/533213 DUKA RSI 24 in 1 Ratchet Screwdriver Kit
DUKA holds 3 bits at once and the body can be easily rearranged to make it extra long or shorter. I was skeptical at first, but this has been one of my favourite additions to my tools and the set I grab most often - it's just so satisfying to use. The bits can be swapped to the ozito screwdriver for quick screwing/unscrewing (https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-3-6v-cordless-screwdriver-…).

      2) Klein tools folding Hex Keys https://www.amazon.com.au/Klein-Tools-70582-Folding-Hex-Key/…
Folding hex key, I've used many in the past and the Klein tools is by far my favourite. Good quality, convenient, compact and fits in the pocket with enough length for most tasks, especially when swapping between tools. Can just throw it back into my pocket.

      3) Klein tools T-handle https://www.amazon.com.au/Journeyman-T-Handle-Klein-Tools-JT…
Sits on the bench, easy and convenient to grab AND return individual pieces. Long shaft useful for hard to reach. The go-to when just making quick adjustments in the garage.

      4) Wera hex tool sets
Great quality. I've got the coloured long shaft set and it's probably the one I'd have if I had one and only one set. I just don't find it convenient as the other options. Getting the keys out (and back in) is a pain and properly requires two hands. It's too big/heavy to just carry around. Would be nice if the two halves can separate out so you can have commonly used sizes on the go.

      • Never heard of the DUKA RSI rachet screwdriver kit…..That's on the to buy list now! (already got the ozito screwdriver after a previous OzB post so saving $$$ there).

        Thanks for your post.

      • Just googling it, the Xiaomi one is familiar but there are heaps of other brands. Do you have a specific branded one?

Or just Duka is it as long as that name is in the product?

        • +1

Not sure. I have seen the other ones in the past and had always been skeptical and only bought the duka one because of ozB.

I've never used any other similar product from other 'brands' but would imagine they're more or less the same for about the same price point. Probably even same product/same factory. Having just quickly googled it, it's actually RS1 and there's also an RS2 set with sockets. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000333177024.html

Would like it more if the box was bit more compact but opening/closing, retrieving and returning the tool and bits is easy and can be done single-handedly. Before actually buying it, from the pictures I thought that the ratchet could easily break and that's why i was skeptical at first, but when using it, I just swap bit or arm over to non-ratchet side when applying more torque.

Also can just spin the bit holding arm with your fingers to quickly screw/unscrew whether it's connected to the ratchet or disconnected from the tool (like a screw driver). It's nicely balanced so you can also hold tool with one hand and twirl it using a finger with the other hand. Very satisfying to use.

Looks like a decent set. I recently went for this 9-piece set at AliExpress (variant C) for $24.43 + GST, though estimated shipping is over a month.

    • +10

AliExpress: for when only the finest chinesium will do, fresh from the source

    • +4

      Buy right buy once

    • i mean i do buy a lot of stuff from aliexpress but it's usually plastic or electrical parts - stuff that aren't meant to last a life time

  • I have the short ones and it's by far the best hex key set I ever owned.

  • Wera guys: I need a torque wrench, but $300 for the Wera is well out of my price range. Any alternatives?

    • +2

Depends what torque range you need but Kinchrome are readily available and decent.

    • Don't waste your money on Kinchrome. The HRD ones from Total Tools are the best reasonably priced but good quality torque wrenches I could find. Taiwan made with Japanese internals and they have an exceptionally wide range (important because accuracy is always specced within a certain percentage of the range). They're also re-calibrateable.

  • I don't need this, but it's Wera… so I made myself to need this.

  • +1

Wera, to me, has a sort of weird vibe where they're nice to look at, but will never use. I had Wera everything at one point, Zyclops 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, multiple screwdriver sets. the kit thing, all sorts of stuff. Never used them, I already have Sidchrome, Kincrome, Gearwrench, Tekton etc to use on my car. So I ended up selling all of my Wera gear to pay for vet bills.

But $32 for a long hex set is pretty good. I have a 9pc Kincrome set; siimilar quality, does the same thing.

  • I have looked through the listing and not been able to find this info (on either 7 or 9 piece), is there anywhere I can find out which sizes of hex keys each one has?

    • +2

It’s on the second product image for me

      • Derp, thank you, I was searching the text for the info.

  • +1

9-piece Set back to $45, I got the last one at $32, thanks OP

    • Too complicated lol, removed my comment.

Haha…when I was buying, it said last one as well!!
@OZKap…let's see who gets it ☺️

These arent even hardened steel? Theu will strip easily if just 304 stainless..

    • +1

High corrosion protection thanks to chrome-plating

      Obviously not stainless then

    • +1

Bruh these are Wera. They make some of the best wearing tool steel you can get. Look at the PF test video linked above.

I'm astounded that people pay these prices… things must have gold plating on the plastic clip!
There are some tools that have incredible pricing for no advantage or increase in useability.
I'd bought a couple of cheapish adequate allen key sets held together with a spring clip…and eventually lost them.
I bit the bullet and bought a set of champion allen keys (back then they were in a plastic fold out tool case)
About 20 YEARS of use LATER the set is still in as new condition and complete, and the plastic case is still in good nick…amazing!
I see champion's current version of that set is now in a steel case…. for $27
I've seen a few bits of vera stuff in these ozbargain deals… and just roll my eyes. Too many people with too much money!

      https://www-us.wera.de/en/great-tools/hex-plus/

Prevents wear inside hexagon socket screws. Hex-Plus provides larger contact zones in the screw head thus reducing the notching effect to a minimum and protecting the profile.

Just as an aside, that champion set is in a plastic case - you can see the moulded strengthening ribs

      • +1

The ball end can also be a lifesaver and I always grab my Wera set when doing anything difficult.

        • The ball end looks really useful.

      • Yep, you're right thanks….I was wrong about the metal case…. so I prefer my old soft plastic fold out wallet thing than the later version.

I wonder how many folks here have multi repetitive use of hex keys to make any difference re "hex plus" and the like.
Interestingly…famous and very credible "project farm" youtuber reviewed hex key sets…and recommended craftsman for great value and very good performer. He gave wera and wiha top recommendation…for nearly 3 times the cost!

There's a difference in duty cycle between most people (including ozbargainers?) …. and the amount of use a mechanic would put these to.
I see my original comment wasn't at all popular. I thought people came here to look for bargains…. not rolls royces. I'm guessing the voters don't represent the broader ozbargain community set of values.

Such is life…. I'm happy to have a very broad range of good quality tools bought at good prices, rather than a small selection of princess tools bought for top dollar.

        • +2

If you can get a Rolls Royce for the price of a Corolla, isn't that considered a bargain?

          • @aragornelessar: Yes…. But the WERA is at rolls royce prices!
Champion is lexus at a corolla price, Craftsman is a corolla special with all the bells and whistles at a hyundai price.

  • Are the longer versions better than the shorter ones?

    • Longer means bigger lever arm to get more force on a bolt, and longer reach for deeply recessed fasteners, but takes more room to swing, and takes up more room/weight in your toolbox.

  • +1

I got all of the fun of purchasing with none of the guilt of not using them by adding both to my cart to qualify for the discount, and then not proceeding with the purchase. #OzbargainPro

  • -2

Is this really a bargain when you can get a set from the $2 shop?

    • Let's just completely ignore that these are Wera quality.

Kindly link a $2 set of ball-end hex wrenches. Bonus points if you find one that is chrome plated.

  • Already got mine delivered today. That was quick.
