Cheapest was $65 why buy for $91?

    • +15

      Ah, Dec 16, 2019. I remember it well…

      • +2

The calm before the storm. Bushfire season.
Wonder if that $53 million ever got split across the various charities?

        • +1

It didn't because people didn't bother to read what they were donating to. It was an NSW RFS trust which by law they couldn't just give money away to other charities but had to spend per their charter.

Also that bushfire season was already well and truly going by Dec

Back when we were happy to cough and splatter our viruses on each other… Oh wait, we learnt nothing

        • +1

We learnt that life is too precious to spend it staring at the ceiling

There was a woman in Chemist Warehouse in Capalaba QLD yesterday hocking up her guts in the line to check out, didn't even attempt to cover her mouth and felt the need to be touching everything around here. Morons.

What is the point of this when we have phones with internet, you can just get the weather data for your suburb, it might be small percent off from local variation, but so will these cheap sensors that wont be calibrated or positioned perfectly.

    • +6

I would agree with you but these sort of sensors are mainly used for combining with automations(home assistant for example) at or around your home, so you will get more accurate conditions to trigger custom events.

      • +3

More accurate, but also local control, so if the internet is out your automations will still fire.

I’m sick of government lies and I just want to know the truth

      • +1

Isn't that why we are all here?

      • +4

        You can’t handle the truth.

        • +1

And that truth is that birds aren’t real.

      • +8

Big Weather is controlling the government.

        • +1

And big government is controlling the weather

      • Geo engineering is a thing

They use it all the time in uae and saudi arabia

      • +2

I just don't trust the weatherman and I don't even play golf.

        • +1

First of all, he's not a "weatherman", he's a meteorologist. Show a little bit of respect.

    • +7

If you're a farmer these will tell you accurate data for your farm.

Up in the Riverina you could have one area get 30mm of rain and another 5km get zero.

      • +9

These are excellent for microclimates. I have mine in the bathroom so I can be sure no wind has been blowing in there recently before I go in

        • Also don't measure humidity. Could check your exhaust fan is calibrated correctly.

      • +1

If my business needed it I would spend quite a tad more on a Davis or better. Yes, storms can deliver different amounts of rain in different paddocks. This weather station would not be useful for that reality as it would not be as accurate and you would not be able to remotely read the data, and you would also need additional data like soil moisture.
What you also need is some sort of comms so the data can be observed from the homestead, be it 4G, microwave or satellite. A station with that built in would be more fit for purpose. These all cost, plus the panels to power those comms.

This weather station is designed for backyard use.

        • The is a Davis weather station a few streets down from my place. I just tap into it using the Davis app to get the data.

          • @ca6leguy: That's a really good idea! I just did that!

          • @ca6leguy: are there many around I looked on their website but it only brings up 4 in Brisbane area, wondering if I use the app will I find more?

      • Worked well on our tea tree farm in Bungawalbin until it became a underwater weather station in February.

      • You don't have to be in the Riverina. In Sydney Metro just the other week I received over 50mm of rain in the space of 90 minutes, whereas the two closest BoM weather stations (both less than 5km's away) recorded nothing.

    • +10

I find my kids love looking at the weather station. They actually get quite excited telling me what's going on. I know it's a small thing but at least it's better than them watching Peppa Pig 🤣

      • Oh you show off…wait till they are older and stuck to their phone 24/7…you'll wish the Peppa pig days were back:-)
PS Charlie and Lola is better than Peppa pig…or even give Mr Ben a go.

    • +2

It is a hobby to be sure, but it is also amazing how different temperatures and rainfall can be across a suburb.

    • +1

you can just get the weather data for your suburb, it might be small percent off from local variation,

The nearest BOM weather station to my suburb is on top of a mountain. As a result if I use a weather app the reported temperature is often 10+ degrees different from that down in the valley.

Not everyone lives in a city.

    • Yeah, it's a bit stupid considering that I have Xiaomi temp sensors around the house, and a pi scraping the radar from the BOM. I do plan on integrating it into home assistant. It's more a project to play around and waste time on more than anything.
Your point is definitely valid. Now I feel a bit silly making 1:30am glad asleep purchases haha

      • Nah these things are interesting and good fun, you've done well op

    • For some areas you're absolutely right, "suburb" data can be OK, for others….well, my nearest BOM station is 10kms away, on a very small island. My actual location temperature, wind, and humidity are wildly different.

  • +1

    $116.24 for me now.

    • There is a check box on the page with an extra $25 off.

  • thanks OP, good deal

  • Can this upload to Weather underground automatically?

    • -4

      Doubt it

    • +1

      Yes

    • From the OP’s post: [Other Supported Weather Servers】: Supports uploads outdoor sensor data to weather underground, weathercloud and WOW;

WOW is the Bureau’s version of WU.

  • +1

Great price. Sadly the cockatoos at my place with make mince meat of it within 10 minutes.

  • Perfect timing, my older model Ecowitt sensor recently stopped registering the outdoor temperature and I had been planning on getting a new sensor.

  • How does this compare to the Wittboy?

  • Great price, and integrates easily with Home Assistant

  • +2

    Would non-gateway option at $87 WS2320 better option, compared to GW1101 ?

  • Most challenging part for most people is where in the world do you you attach it, that is a) reachable, and b) not blocked in some way giving inaccurate readings.

Went looking to attach with tv antennae poles etc and the cost is more than this device!

    • +2

Location is relative. I'm sticking mine in the veggie patch. It'll be shaded, rain deprived and wind sheltered. It won't be an accurate reflection of the weather in the area but it will be for my veggies.

    • For me, probably on top of my kids cubby house.

  • +1

These are great, and the price seems right. Been using ours for years to feed weather data into Home Assistant 👍

  • Is there a panel that accompanies this to display the data?

    • +1

The listed package doesn't come with one. Apps/PC for data via the controller. However there are other packages that do have a display/monitor. You could probably buy one separately but it'd be better to find a package with one.

11Cents a couple of posts up listed one. Look about and see which screen you like, they have a few packages at various prices.

      • Thanks for the info!

  • +1

I want it but god knows I don't need it

    • +1

      I'm in the same boat

  • Too much research - the $25 discount is gone now it seems.

Also, how is this version different? It doesn't mention the probe, but still measures temp so I can't quite work it out.

    • For a brief moment my linked item had a $40 voucher too which I think has also been gobbled up. Also interesting is neither the OP nor my link are showing in the Ecowitt store which shows all voucher discounts.

  • +1

Never knew I needed one - thanls op!

    • Did you get the voucher? I can't see it, is it gone?
