Wouldn't one just get the Officeworks 12tb for $300 and not deal with the risk of poor packaging?

    • +3

      Hand in your Ozbargain badge!!

      • +7

Uh why? It's better. You can also use the JB $30 off with matching?

        • +1

Just a heads up, the JB Perks deal ends today. So get in quick.

        • JB wouldn't price match all the way for me FYI - went down to 322 but not 300 for the 12TB. With perks it works out to be cheaper, but still.

          • @Mattz0r: I got mine pricematched yesterday in store. $299.

          • @Mattz0r: I got it via online chat.

          • +1

@Mattz0r: I bought two yesterday by price matching online, plus $40 off each for perks then paid with giftcards at 5% off. So just under $250 per drive. They couldn't do free delivery though which is what the officeworks deal includes.

          • @Mattz0r: they will via chat and send u a link. click and collect I did

          • @Mattz0r: Go elsewhere. That's lousy.

          • @Mattz0r: Price matched for me this morning at Carindale with no problems. I also used the $40 code. Sweet deal in the end.

      • +9

Hand yours in, 12TB is better than 10TB.
        Discount gift cards too

        • +4

          Oh, I missed the 12tb vs 10tb
          Carry on @scuderiarmani!

    • +1

how can you get 12TB for $300?

        • +10

Umm, but thats not a RED Plus NAS grade drive..

          • -8

@Grish: It's probably a white label data center drive which is a better drive than the red plus, just way nosier.

            • @Agret: Quieter, actually

              • @[Deactivated]: I was just looking for noise ratings for this 12tb external drive, with no luck, just reports of thumping sounds every ~10sec.

The OP 10tb red specs suggest it's quite noisy, the 12tb red is much quieter, but currently a lot more expensive too.

                • +2

@Finner: I have 6 of 12tb elements, they real quiet, no thumping noises either. I can only hear them when my TrueNAS does zfs scrubbing.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Might be worth the buy then! Did they need any adapters to go into the NAS?

                    • @Finner: No adapters needed, it is normal sata drive in enclosure.

                  • @[Deactivated]: True. I have 4 x 10tb Red+ been operating 24x7 for last 5+ years. Plus I have 2x on shelf for redundancy if a drive fails (RAID 10 config). These drives ARE quiet and reliable.

                    • @et tu brute: I was referring to 12tb white label Elements. I dont have Red Plus.

                • @Finner: Wd have data spec sheets telling you this.

                  • @superroach: Acoustics aren't listed on the Elements datasheets - likely because the internal HDD can vary, and therefore the potential noise levels.

            • +2

@Agret: But warranty is longer for red plus though…

            • @Agret: I just shucked a couple of the 12tb ones and they're way quieter than my 12tb ironwolfs for what it's worth, can't say how they compare to the wd reds but they're pretty quiet

          • +1

@Grish: Oops, didn't check properly, just did a quick Google. Need scuderiarmani to point out which one he was referring to.

    • Yes, 12tb elements is better, helium, but some dont trust white labels, not sure why.

    • Should I get this or the 12tb from OW.

I have 2x 10tb already in my array, planning to run zfs in the future.

    • Shucked drives may not be as good quality, it's hard to find information for certain but there is a theory that they might die faster. I'm running a 12TB shuck and 12TB non-shuck in my nas. I'd personally rather go one I didn't shuck just in case. It's possible that warranty is the only risk with shuck drives and they are all of the same qualtiy as well. We can only speculate why the external drives go cheaper than internal ones.

    • Because these aren't red plus? And you have no idea what's inside until you open them. So you are taking a punt also.

      • It's 2tb less, huge risk of poor packaging, delays in receiving, costs more, no local warranty….

Pick one. Any one. Pick them all.

        • You will get WD warranty on o'seas drives if they are retail which these look to be. So I ask again what do you get in these shucked boxes?

          • @gadget: Mate
I gave an option. 12tb for less locally.

            Don't like it? I don't care.

Some don't wanna wait and risk it.

            • +1

@scuderiarmani: Neither do I. I couldn't care less what you buy. I just would like to know what you get in these desktop drives.

              • @gadget: Well ask the countless people who bought them in the deal

                • @scuderiarmani: I have. Let's see what the experience is. If these are ultrastars I take back my comments and will say they are a good deal.

  • +1

Can I use this for my plex server as an external drive?

    • +2

What are you using as the Server?

Would just get a external anyway….

      • Just a MacBook Pro 2015 not super advanced

        • I'll refrain from recommending anything as I have precisely zero experience with Mac.

        • As @scuderiarmani said, better to just grab an external drive if you're going to use it attached to the Macbook - if you bought this deal, you'd need to buy an enclosure with USB-C/Thunderbolt (possibly USB depending on your model) or a NAS to mount it on the laptop to serve via Plex anyway

          • -1

@lachhelix: Mate, did you notice MacBook Pro 2015? That model doesn't have USB-C.

            • @netsurfer: Yeah, I edited my comment to add USB, didn't realise Thunderbolt 2 wasn't backward compatible

          • +1

@lachhelix: Thanks I think I will end up getting the external 12tb from officeworks, currently working on a JB price match and will secure some gift cards.

One day I will go for the NAS setup

        • You could, but you need a USB-A enclosure with power adapter.

          Something like this: https://www.centrecom.com.au/volans-35-sata-to-usb30-alumini…

Do your research as there are likely cheaper ones. No need to go down Thunderbolt 2 path as this HDD is not fast enough to benefit from it.

          • @netsurfer: Yeah, think they're better off just buying a USB-A external HDD if they're not going down the NAS route

    • +2

Just buy a NAS and a bunch of these. Cut out all the upgrade steps.

    • If you want an external drive just pay the extra $30 and get the enclosure & an extra 2tb storage.

  • Delivery February 6…

  • Aw man i ordered a 12tb yesterday from there for $400. Does amazon do price matching, or is it mroe up to the vendor or your credit card offering it?

    • +1

      buy another. return the first

      • This

    • I've never gotten amazon to do price matching, even on their own stuff vs an order that's not arrived.
They still made me buy another. return the first.

  • Can I stick this in a PC or do I need to install Nas software to make it work

    • +1

Just stick it in there. Need a SATA cable to your motherboard and a SATA power cable to your PSU to run it.

  • It has mixed reviews regarding packaging. I need the drives but I don’t know if I can take on that risk, especially with an international seller.

    Hands in my ozbargain badge…

    • You're buying from Amazon. If there are any issues just return it.

      • With something like a hard disk, you may not find issues until a little later on

        • 10 tb NAS drive. Should be protected for a very long time.

    • I bought one of these recently (Amazon US). Came in a box with the drive suspended on plastic packers at each end. Worked perfectly. It's Amazon so if it's DOA just return it.

      • Hoping my 2 this week have something similar. Seperate parcels from the US.

        • All I can say is that they're packaged better than the ones sent out locally. Came only with bubble wrap in a satchel. Unsurprisingly it was DOA.

          • @gadget: Would you recommend any specific tests?

Or would me simply loading up 50-75% of data on the drive be a nice way to go about it too?

            • @scuderiarmani: Can't say TBH. HDD sentinel seems to be a popular choice. I just plugged it into my NAS and let the raid rebuild which takes about a day or 2 which should show up any issues pretty quick with all that writing. That said the dud drive that I got locally wasn't even recognised.

  • Hi All, I've been watching these for a while, I want to put one in my existing tower and use it as a plex server. Is this the best option? Is the only reason people are saying to go for the 12tb external because it's got more space?

  • Just went to order and it looks like the price has gone back up.
