  • Is there any preference between Delonghi and the equivalent Breville?

Or is it mostly style preference until you start getting into seperate machine & grinder i.e. a Gaggia + grinder?

    • +2

I think for this amount of money you'd probably rather buy a Breville Dual Boiler on sale and a 1zpresso with room to upgrade to an electric grinder like a Eureka Mignon Specialita

      https://www.wildboarcoffee.com/breville-oracle-vs-delonghi-l…
I have bought an oracle recently but seems like this is a good cheaper alternative.

      • -1

There is no comparison. Oracle > Maestro.

        • Fair enough. I saw a barista pro and it seems like they cut costs the cheaper the machine gets

          • -1

@Royale with cheese: That may be correct re cost savings on certain models but the Oracle is Breville's 'flagship' product in the coffee category.

I almost pulled the trigger on one of these Delonghi machines several times (really like the idea of the integrated tamp handle) but, each time, a deep dive into the online reviews/comparisons put me off. The main issues reported were as follows:

      • Inferior coffee and build quality compared to Breville machines
      • Lots of people reporting machines devloping leaks

I recently purchased a Delonghi coffee machine for my parents - ECAM290.62.B Magnifica Evo Automatic

it was not working as it was meant to so they took it to a service centre. the guy there said it had some broken internals and the milk side was not working. After a drawn out returns process i had to wait a whole day for startrack to pick up the package for it to be returned. literally said they would pick it up in the AM (not when in the am, just AM) then they finally arrived at 4.45pm. (i do recognize this was startrack post to blame not delonghi)

i still am waiting to hear back on what is even going on with the refund as they have not been clear in the slightest. terrible customer service.

I wish i had done your due diligence and read reviews before pulling the trigger on it. won't be buying delonghi ever again.

also i do realize that the david jones returns process is probably a lot better. however i had bought from delonghi online. doh

Bought the same model ECAM290.62.B from delonghi and has been working well for me. Touch wood it stays that way. Maybe you were unlucky with your unit?

Either way I agree delonghi customer service is terrible. I definitely wouldn't repurchase anything from delonghi based on their customer service. Hopefully you get your refund soon!

Overall build quality is similar enough between the two. Internal design of the Specialista is far worse though - i.e. the brewhead is all one piece, moulded into the body. If that wears out from use the entire body needs to be replaced - terrible design.

Can dial in a great coffee on both, but the grinder on the Specialista is a step below what Breville use (which is already pretty average) - good reason to always use separate components. Grinder failure is more common than it should be too.

As far as leaks, I've only seen two so far.

They're great as far as ease of use goes, but they need to release an improved model.

This model is most similar to Breville Barista Express Impress BES876, with a Not so great auto frothing function.

    • No it's not, this is most comparable to the dual boiler due to the following

Coffee Thermoblock and independent heating system for milk

      • Heat stability of a boiler is quite alot better due to thermal mass, if you want to compare this machine with something one of the sunbeam cafe series might be more suited

  • +1

Am I mistaken or is the only benefit of a “dual boiler” you can can pour coffee and froth at same time?

So save yourself like 30s - 1 min depending on your froth skills?

    • +1

      Yes, you are correct.
Since standard draw should be around 30 -35 seconds then thats exactly how much you save. Your frothing skills wont change that.

There is also talk about "superior thermal stability " on dualboiler, but thats in the realm of gold plated HDMI cables so I dont worry too much about it.

    • +2

In reality, it’s more like several minutes. You also need to account for the boiler heating up to steam temperature and back down to brew temperature when switching.

It’s only a pain when doing more cups with diff milk requirements(full cream, skim) etc.

  • Would avoid this. Only 10 grind setting and I found the I couldn't dial this in properly. Also the steam is non existent, to the point that I just would froth my milk on my old cheap coffee machine.

I got this machine for like $800ish on a previous deal, ended up sending this back for a refund and got the dual boiler instead.

  • Can I ask a potentially stupid question … how do I add this machine to my shopping cart?

There's no "Add to Cart" or "Buy" like buttons on the page.

    • Must be sold out. I'll update the post.
