On sale is this Mini PC if you're in the market for a small footprint PC or an alternative to the Raspberry Pi. Despite the small form factor measuring 160x80x20mm, this Mini PC still packs a lot of features. The 10W Intel Celeron N5105 with 4c/4t offers good performance for a Celeron and can easily decode a lot of 4K, HDR and VP9 content without dropping frames, so it's a good option for media playback.

Other features include preinstalled Windows 11, dual 4K output via HDMI 2.0 and USB-C DisplayPort, additional USB-C port for power input, 8GB LPDDR4 RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD (upgradeable), 2.5" SATA port for additional storage, 3x USB 3.1 Gen1 ports, 3.5mm audio jack, gigabit ethernet port, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. The Mini PC is actively cooled with a copper heatsink and small fan.

These Tremont cores are much more capable than the Atoms of old. Good price for a thin client.

    • Yeah I looked into them and they're not half bad now.
Single thread's about 30% slower in than a Coffee Lake era U-series processor so don't expect too much but that's still a lot better than the core 2 duo tier Airmont cores I was expecting.
      Quite good for this price.

      • Speaking of Coffee Lake, would you go with this, or one of the refurb i5-8500t Mini PCs that go for ~$300 if you wanted a Plex server?

      • +1

Shocked to find it was ~75% of the venerable 2600k performance using 1/9th the watts. Daaaamn.

  • +1

this would be better than a shield ?

    question tho …

how would this go decoding X264 10 BIT content ?

  • +6

I get this is new, but reckon it would be worth seriously considering the far cheaper refurb USFF options like this.

    • +2

That's definitely a good value option but it's also worth considering this deal has built in WIFI and HDMI 2.0 for HTPC purposes.

      • +4

Slightly better processor and in-built wifi here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/749044

        • +2

          Now that's a good package.
It also has HDMI but i'm having trouble figuring out what version.
Friggin dell website was like "HDMI: Yeah it has one"
          Real helpful.
Oh well it's probably at least 1.4
          Edit: Yeah it was 1.4

        • I bought one that advertised WiFi, there was a model with built-in but I just received one without and a dongle.

    • +1

Depends on your use case really. That one and the one coathanger linked below are inferior with video playback for example due to the CPU and GPU. It'll drop frames with 4K@30Hz and it can't do HDR either.

      • Nonsense, the GPU supports hardware decoding for h264/265.

        • +3

Confirmed from Intel datasheet (available here), although support is not for all variations of resolution, encode settings etc.

Nonetheless, some users do report non-smooth playback at what appear to be supported-in-datasheet settings e.g., https://redd.it/j03dfm

I'm not invested enough to look into it further.

Thanks, got this one instead. Should do what I need it to.

  • Anyone use these things for home assistant? I am currently using a pi 3 but wanting to move it as I got no backup if the hardware dies.

    • Yeah do it, it’s just a price difference obviously!

    • switching to dockers on windows 10 from pi3 was the best decision i made. heaps better performance and stability.

      • +2

That’s interesting, I’ve never had an issue with performance in my pi 3 running 5 containers, including Plex.

        • Woah, you use a Raspberry Pi as Plex Media Server? How does it handle transcoding or do you never encounter the need to transcode?

          • @YeboMate: Depends on what you're playing, I have a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB RAM model and initially Plex was not powerful enough to transcode anything that was over 1080p x265 depending on the file size it kept buffering.

For now I use my Win 10 PC for Plex.

          • @YeboMate: Bingo, don’t transcode anything.

            • @athk: How do you manage to not transcode anything? Do you only obtain certain media types or do you convert them to a more accessible format before adding them to your Plex library?

              • @YeboMate: If I need to I use handbrake to cover but I haven’t had to do that often. All my devices seem to play direct, locally anyway.

              • @YeboMate: The shield can mostly play everything without transcoding, I think the only thing I have that needs transcoding is anime with subtitles.

      • Wait till you try Docker on Linux.

Scrap all the overhead from the Windows operating system and any emulation around containerisation!

I have the Mele units (with 8GB) running Proxmox + HASS for a year now & it's been perfect (and low powered). Bought two and a Proxmox cluster with Postgres + other things sipping ~12W in total (for both at peak) & most times ~4-5W.

I got them via some CC (ANZ Black I think) Amazon giftcard and on sale, was well worth it then.

      • +2

I moved from a 3rd gen Intel USFF from 2012 to a newer MeLe unit that has similar specs to this (N5105, etc) & USB-C.

I also had some RPis. Due to the current resale value of these, I migrated their services to the Mini PC and sold them. Power consumption down, equipment consolidated, completely passive, a lot of more processing power and capability. I think it was a good choice and I would buy this unit if I were to do it again.

      • those Are not Cheap my friend !

  • +3

Tested a Mele one from Amazon with 5105. Too slow with windows 11 on it.

  • Australian plug?

    • EU or US only by the looks of it

At this price point why not get Intel nuc with the same processor and add your own ram and storage.

    • +7

Because that would cost more? This deal already includes RAM, storage and a Windows licence.

These machines are very clearly aimed at the budget market - a similarly specced NUC would cost at least $100 more, even if you got a dodgy licence. That's a 40% jump in price.

      • Yeah true. The cheapest nuc at PLe is $229, so adding ram $45 for 16gb, storage $35 and windows $25 ish

        • +1

Plus like $18 delivery if you can't pick up.

        • +1

Bro you're off your rocker with your price estimates lol.

Double the RAM price for SODIMM - we are looking at $90 bucks for DDR4 2x8 GB
Windows for $25? Not retail, that's for sure
Storage $35 yeah could get a 256GB for a 2.5 inch drive if your NUC supports it

Point is, this is a good deal and not too comparable to a NUC at the price point

          • @String name: i think the comment above was about a dodgy license so i estimated $25. i have seen ram cheaper even brand new on OZB. i think $59 for 16 gb or $32 for 8gb but on FB you can find cheaper ram generally from people getting rid of 8gb stick that came with their gaming laptops.

  • Doesn't seem to be much info on internals of these boxes. Need to know these things to meet upgrade requirements for my home proxmox / homeassistant setup:
Number of RAM slots (need 2)
    NVME supported
WIFI onboard or mini pcie? (I'd be throwing out the wifi card and replacing with a pcie coral accelerator)

Would be nice if it was sold barebones (and without windows, if that's adding to the cost)

    • You'd probably be better off finding a refurb USFF from Dell, HP or Lenovo that meets your criteria. These budget Chinese designs probably have soldered memory and wifi module

    • NVMe is already mentioned and the WiFi is an Intel AX201 module. I'll confirm what the go with the RAM is.

      Edit: RAM not upgradeable

    • I will be using this for Proxmox.

Need a low power box for my back up services (Adguard and uptimekuma off the top of my head)

  • It should be pretty quiet right? Just for playing 4K movies.

    • +1

The fan on these Chinese mini PC's just runs all the time regardless of whether you are using it or not, so bear that in mind.

  • wonder if it can use a standard usb power?

    • 5V wouldn't be enough. Needs to be 12V/3A

  • Does anyone know the country of origin of JX1? (Are they a Chinese based company)

    • Yes

  • The should have an option for 16 GB of ram to choose from

  • N5105 has similar power as i5 2500. Good enough to build a All-in-One NAS
