Reading that Canstar link it seems it's more of a popularity contest based on consumer feedback rather than a proper product category review by Canstar themselves, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Personally I use the Aldi one, it's cheap and works great, I can still smell the fabric softener in my clothes days after washing them.

I've tried most of them (haven't tried purity) and so far, the fragrance temptations range have been my number 1 for keeping clothes smelling fresh and soft for longer period. Aldi's anco concentrates are also very good I just wasn't so keen on the smells. Price wise this is cheap at the moment being $4/50 washes (as directed) compared to Aldis 1L $3.89/40 washes. If not for the smell, I would likely buy Aldi's stuff (Smell isn't bad, I just don't like smelling like flowers).

Appreciate your feedback. I've decided to buy this and give it a go given the price per wash is good and your point of view tempted me to give something new a try ;-)

  • Do you guys dry the clothes under direct sun or under cover ? The fragrance is gone once it is dried under direct sun

    • I do dryer (It's the only option I get) and most softeners have no smell at the end, but this one and Aldi's kept their smell pretty well.

  • Ahhhhh, finally. Back to the pre-pandemic pricing again. Now, if only the vanilla and coconut was also discounted 🙁

What do these actually do? I have tried several different fabric softeners over the years and have never noticed anything feeling softer.

I've been reading more about how they are terrible for washing machines these days so have gone off them completely.

      • yes, I haven't used fabric softeners for years, bad for the machines and bad for the fabric

    • Best case scenario a pleasant smell. I use it only when washing sheets.

    • +1

I'm weird and like really crunchy dry towels (feels like it dries me better) so I never use softener. I think my mum stopped using it as well pretty early on, so haven't had "soft" clothes for like 20+ years.

      • +2

Softener actually reduces absorption. So you're right. But a towel dried in the dryer is better as the fibres are more spread out and give more surface area to dry.

  • Sold out for the 2L I'm pretty sure

Late last year I finally gave up on frabic softener. I grew up with my parents using it and moving out thinking I need it, which I used the over ten years.

Decided to stop using it as it was leaving residual in my front loader which would turn black and dislodge as gunk going into load, leaving crap on the clothes at the end of the cycle. Spent hours cleaning that crap out. It was caused by the frabic softener.

Did a bit more research and it seems that washing liquids these days are pretty good and there is no need for another product. Also some of my clothes specifically say not to use frabic softener.

So anyway, I'm no longer using it and have a few bottles left with we have no idea what to do with.

There’s a Biozet with softener built-in which seems work well from my experience.

      • Our standard liquid is Biozet Attack PLUS Eliminator or just the Biozet Attack. But we also use others like Black Wash, Wool Wash and some enzyme free stuff for the hiking gear. Never used the Biozet Attack with Softener

I get black gunk buildup in my front loader too. I've never used fabric softener in it.

The gunk you are talking about is normally detergent build up. This normally happens when people use cold water only to wash their clothes. The cold water does not dissolve the detergent properly. To fix this, run the machine on a 90 degrees cotton wash with nothing in it and pour 2 cups of vinegar into the dispenser as the water is filling. If this doesn't work you can get washing machine cleaner in the laundry isle at the supermarket. To prevent this coming back, do at least one load of washing (towels or sheets) at 60 degrees per week and when the machine isn't in use, leave the door open. Hope this helps

        • This is most certainly the most useful reply I have ever received on OzBargain. And yes you are correct, cold wash is what I use. I'll try what you have suggested and will report back my findings 👍

          Thanks a bunch

        • Yep, thats it, but the chemicals in Frabic softener seem to exacerbate the issue, so I read.

We run mostly on 30c (80%) cold (10%) 40c (10%). Running on average 10 cycles per week. 40c is generally reserved for cotton sheets when the kids wet the bed or something.

A 90c cycle with vinager got rid of maybe 50% of the crap in the drum. Cycle took about 2 hours. The crap that came out of the waste looked disgusting.

I could see that under the rubber seal on the drum there was still heaps of crap. So I got the garden hose with the jet nozzle and just blasted the drum while holding back the rubber gasket. This dislodged everything and made it look brand new. Ran a quick cycle clear it up and now its perfect.

I would say this is the first time I've done this, so maybe 10 years, and at least 3500 cycles.

I run a quarter cup of home brand vinegar through every few loads. Great for getting the sweat smell out of work clothes and stops the gunk build up so I have never had to clean the machine out.

As other commenters have mentioned, I've noticed no noticeable differences from using fabric softener. Many materials can't even be used with fabric softener, and apparently fabric softener reduces the absorption power of towels.

Feels like the idea of fabric softener itself is not a bargain

Totally agree. Plain old white vinegar is far superior and far cheaper.

  • +2

    Just use vinegar

I don't like fabric softeners because they mask odours, which means clothes aren't really getting cleaned.

    • I can't stand the smell of clothes that have been washed in fabric softener. It's like a punch in the face. I feel like it's similar to how smokers can't tell that they stink to non-smokers.

  • 2L back in stock

  • Thanks - my favourite!

  • Thanks - max amount per order is 5 x 2L.

  • Fabric softeners are not necessary on anything, anytime. Just another useless product you don't need.

  • Had to get a refund for mine from Amazon.

Cap appears to have came loose from a bottle and exploded inside box in transit.
