airplay feels so dated in 2023

    • what solution would you suggest instead?

Airplay 2 is all I use all day every day. It’s amazing. Not sure what the alternative is…?

    I use an M5 Audiocast: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32927710056.html
Cheaper, works like Chromecast audio. Perfect for our mixed iOS and Android household.

    • Got excited thinking it actually supported Chromecast audio, but sadly no

      • I suppose the only 'true' way for that would be to use a Chromecast connected to an HDMI to audio converter.

I also found there was a package you could deploy to a raspberry pi for this too, but I never tried it (and have since lost the link)

That or find some old actual Chromecast audios. I've got a couple and they still work great.

  • Expired now. Deal 100% claimed on Amazon.

  • Looks like amazon echo 3 but 10 times expensive

      Great observation.

Echo 3 does not have an optical out to connect to higher end audio equipment. This streamer lets you add streaming capability to existing Hifi amps. Even if you don’t go optical to external DAC route, the built in DAC in WiiM is a Burr Brown which is pretty good quality in terms of audio quality. Echo 3 audio out is very average quality. I have an Echo Show 8 and the WiiM sounds better to my ears.

Just a heads up to anyone wanting to have some tweaky fun, that the AirPort Express (apple’s discontinued router) is cheaper than this and works really well as an airport 2 base station. It outputs (actual) uncompressed content too, via optical. I have one hooked up to an old Apple iPod Dock and it’s a fun little way to do it with some old stuff, is cheap, and works quite well.

They just released WiiM Pro last month, $149 USD vs $99 USD for Mini. Maybe wait for another month or so for Amazon to stock up. Here's a quick comparison

    • That looks excellent
