thought this was Battery Powered Bluetooth speakers
      it's actually "Active" = Powered speakers :D

That is also true even if they are powered by batteries

  • What's the difference between this and R1700?

    • The 1700 is louder with better highs and punchier bass. 42W vs 66W RMS.

Unpopular opinion but the Edifier R1280DB (1st generation) are one of my least favourite speakers. They stopped working me due to the internal power supply failure after a touch under three years. I'm not the only one:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/audio/comments/jpz2ls/edifier_r1280…

The internals are so glue heavy that I wasn't able to repair them. The problem is 3 years is pretty short compared to what I've got out of other speakers (i.e. the Logitech Z3s or Creative T3s).

Also the second generation offers a bunch of really significant changes over the first - a lot of the drawbacks fixed - so check if you'd prefer the second generation (Bluetooth 5, better-looking covers, better remote, subwoofer out).

    • second generation? What model are you referring too?

Actually apparently they did give them a different model number 1280DB became 1280DBs:

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Edifier-R1280DBs-Bluetooth-Bookshe…

      • I found the 1280DBs while trying to search for an solution to my issue. In the end I junked the Edifiers and went with the ultra-cheap Logitech Z200 (don't pay the $50 they're asking for now). In the end, no complaints. The power supply issue completely soured me on the Edifiers.

        • Ive got 3 sets of 2.1 logitechs for 20 bucks each at op shops over the years. I keep seeing more. They do fine for the office comp etc.

I can confirm they are (half) garbage. Lucky my Harman Kardon SoundSticks II are still pumping after almost 15 years! Sadly, they don't make them like that anymore.

    • Buy them 10 times and you will almost be dead

The remote for these is absolutely GARBAGE. Half of the time it doesn't register when you're pointing straight at the speaker. It's very frustrating and ruined how great these speakers were. I still own them, but find myself alternating between holding down the volume button and rapidly pressing it in order to get the speakers to do what they're told. Even with a new battery. If these speakers broke I'd do a hard pass at $100 simply because of the remote.

Agree that the remote is terrible. I ended up just using the controls on the side of the speaker. I've set it to an average level of volume and use the internal volume settings of the connected device from there (PC/Phone when WFH and want music).

You can change the input by pressing in one of the knobs

      • Unless I'm missing something, the right hand speaker is the one with the controls, so they're harder to access. Is it possible to swap the speaker positions but also which is L and R (for stereo purposes)?

        Agree the remote is rubbish.

        • +1

Plug the left output into the right RCA input and the right output into the left RCA input.

      • Thanks, always wondered how to change the input without the remote. Is there a way to switch it on/off without the remote as well?

A workaround when the remote doesn't register is to repeatedly tap the button until it does. Annoying as heck.

        • Not too sure, I just leave mine on

    • Replace the battery, often helps.

    • +1

I dislike the size and button feel of the remote but haven’t had any issue with button presses not registering.
That said, I mostly use either my IR blaster or Apple TV remote to control them recently.

      • Good idea with the IR blaster - I've got a Logitech universal that I might pull out of mothballs

    • Add to that they auto turn themselves on after the power is surged. So I would randomly find they'd turned themselves on and my phone has been connected for the whole day and my battery was significantly more drained than I expected.

Mine have since had Bluetooth fail so they can only be used with an rca plug.

  • Amazing these aren't seen more often in professional studios given the "Studio Sound Quality"…..

    • +7

      They mean studio apartment, duh

  • Is the power cord attached or a barrell plug or something else

    • 240v figure 8 lead.

  • C'mon s3000 pro

    Garbage speakers.

    • They are garbage indeed. I returned mine. Logitech's Z150 sound better, and they are bottom of the barrel already.

  • These would be great if they were the ones with a subwoofer.

I'd use 'em with a Chromecast audio via RCA input for better than Bluetooth quality.

  • These better then a 5+ year old $250 yamaha sound bar?

    • Anything is better than a soundbar
