  • I believe this is the best price so far, on arguably the best SSD drive currently available (except unobtainable 990 Pro)

    • +4

No to the best price — its a good price but I paid $286.91 on the 28th Nov for this model.

      • Hi mate,
What's the status of your order? Mine just got cencelled due to a problem during the shipping.

        • +3

Mine is still awaiting dispatch, expected delivery was originally 28 Dec 2022 - 10 Jan 2023 so either they'll post soon or perhaps cancel like yours, however, it seems odd that they would cancel our orders when they are still advertising these drives from the "Amazon US" seller.

          • +1

@olcrackerjack: They actually shipped mine but my order still got cancelled half way due to a problem during the shipment

            • @xxvvunicum: I had the same happen to a 4k blu-ray order from Amazon Us 2 weeks ago. Order was "on the way" next thing it was "thanks for returning your order… Refunded"

        • +3

I received mine middle of last week

    • Best price was $287 for the heatsink version, was on Amazon back in November.

    • Mine was 277.40 on 28/11/22, but it's a pretty good price

    • Why do you think the 990 Pro is unobtainable?
I got one last week from the Samsung EDU Store and received it 2 days later.

    • They are selling them on amazon…

    • I paid 273 on November 20th for this model, it was shipped but it hasn't arrived I got a full refund from Amazon but i'm hoping it will arrive next year in Jan… It was also shipped from Amazon UK.

  • Are these single sided or dual sided?
Important if you're considering for laptop use.

    • 1TB is single sided not sure about this 2TB version.

Regardless it doesnt seem like a cool ssd to run with and I probably wouldnt put this in a laptop with no room for proper heatsinks and much less airflow than desktops.

      • seems both are 2.38mm height. So both single sided?

        • Hmm yep reckon ur right.

    • This is single sided

    • Tom's Hardware review says single-sided even at 4TB, which implies single-sided at 2TB: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd-black-sn850x-ssd-rev…

  • +1

Would be an instant buy from me if I wasnt rocking a laptop.

    • should be ok for a laptop if it's single sided. I'm using a Samsung 980 Pro in my laptop and I don't think that draws any more power than this. It's a bit of a gamble though. Depends on max power draw your laptop can tolerate.

Nice, looks like a sick bookmark as well.

      • Haha yeah, it will make a good present next Christmas :P

    • +1

so you need just 1 book mark + the SSD or 2 book marks?

edit - nevermind, 1 will do, works out to be $285.19

      • +1

Yep sorry, 1 bookmark gives the discount, I should have added that in my note.

  • wow, that read and write speed is amazing

  • I bought it from this exact the same link a month ago for AU$285. They shipped it a few days ago and I was just told today that the order is undeliverable and cancelled. Not a pleasent shopping experience at all.

    • well.. they have stock now. Tell them to fill the order at $285

      • no need, use the book mark trick, it's almost the same price, but how can they say it's undeliverable? That's just weird…

        • +1

          running out of bookmarks?

        • What is the bookmark trick? 🤔

          • +2

@ShrewdBargin: Buy that bookmark to get additional 5% off on the SSD. The bookmark is $7.87. You obviously would combine it with discounted Amazon gift cards if possible (another 5% off) and if you haven't used the actual Shopback $50 Amazon gift card yet (from yesterday's deal), use that too.

Basically, that bookmark is the cheapest item that's eligible for buy 2 get 5% off.

Thanks but I don't want to go through it again. I am going for KC3000 local stock for $295. Similiar performance, similiar price but with local warranty.

    • Mine was delivered 1 month ago. Something was really wrong with your order.

  • Faaark NAND prices keep dropping. Why did I buy those sn850s

    • Buy this: https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-M-2-X16-Expansion-Card/dp/B08…

Then, you have an excuse to buy 4 more PCIe gen 4 SSDs. P.S. I am kidding of course. Your motherboard needs to support PCIe Bifurcation otherwise that card won't work. Also, it is not an option if you care about gaming (unless you are willing to do x8 x4 x4 combination, but that means only 2 additional m.2 NVMe SSDs).

      • I did see this: https://www.highpoint-tech.com/product-page/ssd7505

However I think I am just better off waiting for 5.0 drives as random writes and reads are impacted by using such a device

        • Well, the first gen PCIe gen 5 SSDs appear to be powered by Phison's E26 controller. That controller is limited to 8 channels still (instead of 16).

          • @netsurfer: Oh I meant using a single gen 5. Most of us never need large file transfer speeds

            • @ShrewdBargin: I know. I am just pointing out the SSD makers (at least the chipset makers) are doing the same thing again. First gen PCIe gen 5 chipsets won't be able to max out PCIe gen 5 x4. Ideally, you want a PCIe gen 5 chipset which does 16 channels (instead of 8). Also, new NAND flash chips are needed to better take advantage of PCIe gen 5.

Random reads + writes, honestly, even if you expect improvement in high queue depth, it is unlikely most of us can really benefit it (other than bragging rights in Crystal DiskMark). Also, what kind of SLC cache cheating will we see for first gen PCIe gen 5 SSDs?

Also, don't forget there is a reason AMD is enticing people with "E" chipset. How much benefit are you really going to get if you simply have 1 PCIe gen 5 m.2. slot? Anyway, the main issue, at least initially, is going to be price.

              • +1

@netsurfer: Absolutely. Basically I was saying I am better off just making do with the sn850s I got and waiting till pcie5 drives are extremely mature.

Or maybe I can snag a P4800X liquidated in a few years LOL

How does warranty work for items shipped from Amazon US? This looks good but can also get Kingston KC3000 2TB for $295 locally from PLE.

  • +1

So i've got the Samsung 970 Evo NVME currently with my OS installed,
If i buy this WD one with much faster read/write speeds, should I have my OS installed on the WD one instead, for this reason?

    • You won't get a huge improvement on OS bootup because OS bootup doesn't benefit from high queue depth sequential reads.

My suggestion is, temporary remove 970 Evo, put this in, install the OS. Once done, put the 970 Evo back in. That way, you will be able to boot from either SSD.

Make sure your PC supports PCIe gen 4 NVMe SSDs, otherwise, you won't be able to run 850X in PCIe gen 4 mode.

Price is even lower now at $282.72 or if you add the bookmark, it’ll be a total of $276.11.

thanks OP, just curious, how does warranty work for the stuff sold by different zone in this case, are we still eligible to get warranty from WD Aus?

    • +2

I cannot confirm but I read on forums that wd Australia don't handle grey imports

      • +1

        make sense tho

        • +1

Yes very few brands have global warranty

    • In theory, the drive is sold by Amazon Australia, and they should be the first port of call for any warranty queries. In practice, it will probably take longer to resolve than if you dealt with a local distributor.
