These applications are always free when downloaded through the F-Droid app store. Fantastic software worth supporting.

yes - here's simple gallery pro, for instance. do note however that the f-droid (oss) version does have some minor differences compared to the google play version. for example, the editor in simple gallery pro on the play store is proprietary and is not in the f-droid version.

Great apps, still think the stock Google apps on Pixel specifically are better though.
The point of these apps is that they're way smaller than their google equivalent. Not that they have anything better. They are usually only a few mbs in size. But they are far away from the old days of android when apps were usually 10s or 100s of kbs in size.
They're also privacy focused
