    meh….

    • +3

It ain't $99 territory like we've seen recently but for a 2TB USB 3.0 drive, it's cheaper than anything you can find at JB, DSE, HN, OW or MSY if you need one right now.

  • Bare drives are almost the same price http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

Not really a deal at all.

    • +1

yes but this has an external case ..

      • +1

And? they are pretty shitty external cases, the lack of cooling of the internal drive means the temps soar above 50c under load.

And most people are buying them to rip the internal drive out.

        • lol cooling for a hdd …

these cases are perfectly fine it aint like these hdd's are 10,000rpm

        • In the past I've used the cases to help sell older hard drives ;)

        • +1

          LOL!!!! Genius!

Shows internal temp over a 2 hour period, yes some 7200rpm drives do actually require active cooling, especially the ST2000DM001 which is enclosed in these external drives.

I have more drives then i can count and do file serving as a serious hobby :)

        • you mean piracy ?

i have over 20TB of hdd's i have about 10 externals my self

i got 4 of these drives and they are perfectly fine they automatically turn off when not in use also

        • Only 20tb? that all, just built a new server with a lian li 343, 40 3tb drives, 24 in raid 60 on a 1882ix-24 (54.4tb usable) and 16 in a raid 6 (38.08tb usable) total space 92.48tb usable, which is post formatted after the parity drives have been removed.

And thats only 1 of 3 servers i currently have in service, the other two (16x2tb in two lots of R5 25.34tb usable) and 11x2tb's in JBOD 19.91tb usable.

Running that many externals is stupid, such a waste of power ports and cabling, not to mention abmyssal speeds and increased risks of drive failures.

        • i dont have all connected at once they are storage over time and this is not for a server as i have no need for a server

        • +1

Backing up an argument with actual data!? +1 to you, good sir.

        • Copie: Youre my hero!!! You want a trophy?

      • You know the market of enclosed external hdd usually priced much lower than bare drives, right?

        • Usually yes, but when the external price is the same as internal (like this deal is) the question remains: why would you buy an external if you are wanting bare drives?

Been quite a few 3tb's available for sub 140 recently, that represents a decent deal.

        • why is that do you think?

        • externals can be internals but internals cant be externals (this model)

  • +1

Very frustrating how a < year ago these were trading 110.00 each -

The technology here really hasn't budged one inch.

    • Not sure whether you're talking about the technology hasnt changed, or the price isn't good.

You do know all about the Thailand floods driving up the cost of hard drives for a long period, yeah ?

    • -1

Both.. Yeah the technology has not moved. & yes we've all heard that excuse.

      • Not an excuse, the price is still artifically inflated by tier vendors still being under contract, once the contracts start coming up for renewal prices should make there way down yet again.

      • +1

Perhaps this explains the case better. Please disregard my ill informed comment.

  • Good price for the moment, but got one some weeks back for $99. Dunno if its just me but I find them quite a bit noisier than my Buffalo external hard drive?

  • Geeze Aldi have'nt been keeping an eye on the market recently. They're way out with this "special buy"

    Medion 1TB 3.5" HDD $99. Eak!

what brand,RPM and model Hdd is this? i looking for and internal atm

    • They are seagate ST 7200rpm drives. You can buy the bare version of this drive for 2 bucks more from pccg, and you won't have warranty issues

Successfully got the 5% Price Guarantee match from OW this morning. Total of $111.15 for the unit and I was on my way. OW at Windsor in Brisbane have bucketloads of them stacked up near the end of the laptop displays. They'll probably update their price to match BigW soon so they don't have to do the 5% extra, but if your local BigW has run out of stock then OW is an option.
