Not sure if I’m liking the extra protrusion from the camera *eyesore

    • +7

Your TV is just happy to see you

      • Bit too excited for me liking.

        • That 1” shouldn’t be too Hard to deal with

Yeah it looks like the colours & effects are great, but camera is the only reason I didn't end up buying this… am waiting on a deal on Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip instead

      • +2

Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip isn't comparable - you need the $450 HDMI box to make it react to content, and the HDMI box has various limitations.

The whole point of this Govee kit is that it operates without the HDMI video.

They're both lightstrips. Say money wasn't an issue they're kind of comparable yeah? Strips that let off colours, light & effects?

I also like how the Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip can also be used with a PC without a HDMI box if you want to set it up on a monitor.

@NeedWifeForVeryCheap: Govee is better regardless of the price.

A camera is better in my opinion coz you won't have to worry about source input issues or drm issues.

If money wasn't an issue I'd find a TV with this shit built in…

@smartazz104: Philips Ambilight are those TVs - they aren't expensive 👍

No - they make colours to match the content on the screen.

The Hue does this by looking at the HDMI video signal, and in doing so limits the signal to the capabilities of the Hue box (so no HDMI 2.1 etc). And you can't use it with inbuilt TV apps because there's no HDMI signal to see.

The Govee does it by physically looking at the screen with a camera.

They use two different methods, but the Govee method is compatible with everything.

You can place the camera the bottom of the TV.

I currently am doing this and my Sonos beam blocks the camera :)

Pretty unsightly, but each to their own. I suppose its cheap, which makes it attractive to buy.

  • Got it for $69 but I only used for one or two days , I wasn’t that much impressed .

    • +1

i wasn't either until I set it up and use properly. you can't use in a room without light blocked and changed settings from default.

Got it on Black Friday. Extremely impressed. Makes every movie burst out of the screen with colour.

You can put the camera on top or the bottom. So you can hide it behind a soundbar if the sight of it bothers you.

Unlike other systems that use a HDMI box, this just uses a camera. This is great for gamers who are using HDMI 2.1.

Bonus tip. Set brightness to however bright you want but turn Saturation all the way down for the most accurate colour.

  • Is this actually "good", Ive not purchased it mainly because Cinemas don't use anything like this so i figured it would be more so a gimmic?
Every demo ive watched for this shows mainly gaming then movies/tv shows.

    • I love it but it's very subjective. If you didn't like the demos than you probably won't like it.

All I can say is that it works as intended.

Well cinemas don't usually have a mass of wall behind their screens.

  • Does anyone have this for a 75 inch tv

    • Ebay but a bit overpriced

      • I meant using this kit 55"-65" for a 75"

        • I remeber someone on YouTube doing this.

        • It will wrap all around all for sides on a 55-65" TV, if you want to use it on a 75" TV, just do it around the top and sides (and not the bottom edge) since you probably have it on a stand and won't see the strip light up on the bottom anyway.

What if you watching a film in widescreen?

  • After seeing a Philips TV with Ambilight I wanted this effect. Got a thing called Dreamscreen a few years ago which worked ok, but now can't keep up with HDR 4:2:2 output (and Dreamscreen the company is no more).

There's the HDFury Diva which is silly money (but does far more than just the lights)
    https://hdfury.com/product/4k-diva-18gbps/

Also I believe options using a Raspberry Pi.

This Govee one looks like it only has 4 quarters which might be enough. On the Dreamscreen each light can react individually, but the HDMI signal passes through it and because it's older tech it blocks a 4k HDR 4:2:2 signal. I constantly had handshake issues with it. Works fine with 1080.

It's barely any more cost than the Hue setup of lights plus HDMI box 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • You don't think A$890 is silly money?

  • How to fit this on 48” inch ? Anyone tried ?

    • It will not. Too long.

  • These are good. An watching TV with it right now.

  • Just bought thanks

  • It’s expired now!

    • Still available for me (Although it now shows as a $60 coupon)

      • Yes you’re right - it was not showing up yesterday and it’s showing up again for me.

  • It is Back in stock guys
