Cheap Printer That Won't Brick Itself

Had a HP but it bitched about non-genuine cartridges.

We do bugger all printing but will do a little bit coming up with wills & whatnot, not sure on OfficeWorks security given these documents will have recovery codes etc, so probably safer to do ourselves.

What is a decent cheap printer that accepts re-filled or Kmart/Big W cartridges?

    • There is absolutely no setting for “just disable protection”. I work on multi-million dollar IT systems - which thank god don’t involve printers - so I’m well aware how to Google. After a few hours it’s a complete waste of time to continue, cheaper to buy a new one and do an hours work instead. We don’t have that printer anymore.

    Brother Laser

I second the above recommendation. Takes generics from eBay and the toner lasts ages

  • get brother, brother~

  • Brother 1210, cheap toners

You can pick up a cheap one second hand even under $20

Yep, been using a 1210W for a few years now. New toner (aftermarket) can be bought for about $15-$20.

  • Cheap is in the eye of the beholder. What does "cheap" mean to you, OP?

And do you want inkjet or laser? And if its laser, are you happy with single sided black and white, or do you want colour, and double side, and the ability to scan.

Inkjets are cheaper, but if you do "bugger all" printing, you can end up in a situation where its a while since you've printed anything and the ink in the print head has dried out and the printer is bricked. Third party inks are cheaper too, but you can have worse problems with them drying out than genuine inks.

Me, I got annoyed by one under $200 Epson inkjet after another with 3rd party inks in them still being perfectly functional mechanically, but having clogged print heads. I replaced them with a HP inkjet that was offered here on OzBargain, but HP wants to lock me into genuine cartridges, and/or charge me for an ink subscription, ie, pay every month for a quota of pages, even if I've only printed them to keep the ink in the print head from drying out. Not sure what I'll' get next. I just don't want to have to pay lots for a laser to get the features like colour and scanning when I do bugger all printing too.

I'd skip having a printer at all except my GP wants me to supply her with info, and she's not allowed to accept a file attached to an email or on a USB in case its got embedded malware.

Get a Brother laser MFC. Even if you don't print much, you will use it for scanning.

If you don't print much, the starter cartridge that comes with it won't ever dry out like ink-jets. If you print 50 pages per year, then it will last 10 years.

  • Get a brother, brother.

  • How many pages are you printing per month? Do you need colour? For me, as I only print a few pages a month, HP subscription works great for me for $1.99 a month. I have 15 pages/mth with the plan and it rolls over for 3 months. I used to buy replacement cartridge every years because they tended to dry up. Surprisingly, the subscription cartridges don't dry up at all…….conspiracy theory.

If you are doing hardly any printing why do you care so much about the cost of genuine toner/ink? You'll hardly ever have to buy them.

Only if there are long periods between print sessions does a laser work out cheaper - inkjet ink does dry out, especially cheap generic ink. And from long experience with home printers Brother does seem to be the least paranoid about "non-genuine" (ie affordable) ink and so puts fewer barriers to clones of it. I've had nothing but good experiences with Brother over the decades, which is more than I can say about Canon, HP or Epson.

    • Exactly it dries up. HP have worked well but always had some stupid “locks” over the past two decades so not wanting another one.

We use Officeworks for printing which solves the issue and means no printer taking up space for not much, but given the sensitivity of these documents not wanting to risk using them :)

  • I bought 4 identical brother laser printers from an op shop for $5 each 3 years ago - ex office equipment. They each came with full paper trays. Used up the toner in the first and just pulled the toner cartridge from one of the others. Have done 400 pages or so.

Marketplace has heaps of 2nd hand laser printers.

  • As soon as you don't throw all your money at genuine ink the printer will brick itself.

  • Husband bought a HP DeskJet 2130 to use at work when network printers were disabled due to ransomware…

Now at home and use generic ink without an issue.

Just a small printer, does colour… if you aren't printing that much something like this would work well.

Don't want to go for a big expensive one if there's a chance that the inks will dry up from lack of use.

  • there's also a waste toner counter. it will also brick from that.
designed to ask for service when when saturated from ink.
    likely a non-user replacable part

    • This part really annoys me. Even if you can get a new waste pad, it's most likely same price/cheaper to buy another second hand or brand new.

  • Sounds like Brother laser is the way to go!
