1000 Lumen CREE XM-L T6 LED Flashlight Torch Light Lamp $12.99 from Meritline

170

Pretty good deal for a CREE XM-L T6 Torch shipped. Will possibly sell out pretty quick for the price. Real Lumens are possible much less but will still be a lot.

  • Battery Configuration: 1 x 18650 battery (Not Included)

    Are those batteries expensive?

  • +1
      • +4

ummm. the battery i listed is protected/ The one you listed is unprotected. big difference! Please dont use unprotected batteries. not worth the risk with Lithium batteries

        • cheers dude. wasn't aware of protected/unprotected batteries until just now.

  • I think you need a special charger for them, as well

    • And don't forget the LiPo bag for safety :)

It's actually a reasonable price, given DX sells the XM-L T6 flashlights for around $20 and above. But I have not heard of longfire before though, so it is quite difficult to find reviews for it.

      • It uses a Li-ion battery, not a Li-Po

        • +1

That is correct, but it doesn't mean you can't store your batteries/flashlight in these bags. Li-Ion batteries have risks of explosion as well, especially when they (batteries and chargers sold on sites like DX, etc) are made in China with minimal to no quality control.

Just to be on the safer side, I store all my batteries and flashlights (with batteries in them) in several LiPo bags. I've read several horror stories on exploding Li-Ion batteries on CPF, and in particular one where a protected-cell battery exploded overnight when it was stored in a cupboard below the kitchen sink. So spending few bucks to reduce the risk of an explosion is well worth it IMHO.

        • +1

Aren't the LiPo bags made from factories with the same quality control?

(I am interested in the LiPo bags. I didn't know they existed before you mentioned them)

        • Also, dang :S that explosion incident is terrible.

I'm sticking to my LSD batteries and torches for them :S

        • lol valid argument

        • Good point. However there are some videos posted on YouTube showing tests made by hardcore users on the LiPo bags bought from places such as DX and the like. Even they have no QC, at least their durability were tested by actual explosions, so that's a plus :)

  • damn it… bought it the day before yesterday for $14.99 :(

  • Good price for a T6.
We'll see how durable it is though.

  • Is it floody or spotty?

    • From the ad description
Uses a smooth reflector, provides a more concentrated beam, and therefore a better throw (range)

      • Whoops, I shouldn't have just gone straight to the reviews to find the answer! Thanks.

  • I have 2x ultrafire WF501b which utilizes XR-E's but I thought its time to upgrade, so ordered one. Seeing that I already have some 18650 batteries already, hope the T6 will throw out more light as compared to the old XR-E's.

    • how are those 18650 doing?
does it hold charge when kept in storage unused?
or, you need to charge them everytime you wanna use them.

      • 18650 is Li-Ion. It will hold charge for years, though not so long as alkaline.

This torch is awfully big ;-) Specs say:

        Dimensions(L x Head Dia. x Body Dia.): 15.5" x 4.5" x 2.6"

A shame it is a 5-mode. Strobe mode would be deadly with an XM-L.

        • Yeah, the 18650 is LiIon. I have never had to recharge them before use and they last for a long time sitting dormant.

Strobe mode is deadly particularly for an epileptic!

  • +1

Never had one of these XM-L T6 LED thingys.

How would it compare to say:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1600-Lumen-Zoomable-CREE-XM-L-T6-…

Higher claimed Lumens & can focus.

Any suggestions for chargers? - my existing charger tells me i'll get fragged if i try to use that.

    • +1

How would it compare to say:

In both cases the specs contain obvious nonsense, could be cut & pasted from another model by a non-english speaker.
Ignore the claimed lumens. Do you want a zoom? They have their uses, but people usually prefer a simple reflector.

    • +5

ok i can gurantee you the 1600lm is completely wrong. the max a XM-L T6 can pur out is 900lm unless you over drive it which is not good for the LED ne way. i would say real output of a XM-L T6 is closer to 650-700lm. Also a lot depends on the driver.

    • Yes that is nice, but hardly relevant to the torch in this deal. You cannot compare a quality light like that one to some cheapy from a different company.

The fact that they claim to have the same Cree chip inside means absolutely nothing… you don't know how well either is handling the heatsinking, the current that the LED is being driven at, the reflector, etc.

The only thing that matters is the WHOLE PACKAGE, not just one small component (the LED chip) that may not even be the same binning anyway.

  • is this really 15 inches long?

    • +7

      That's what she said!

    • I believe this paraphrases something She has said previously.
edit: damn, I should refresh the page more often.

    • 15cm, i suspect.

      • Yeah 15cm, I have one.

  • Can anyone recommend a charger for those 18650 batteries?

  • +2

I would recommend these 18650 batteries. There capacity is more like 2400mAh but their protected and there very high quality. I have been using them for the past 6 months fairly heavily and haven't had a single problem.
    http://www.manafont.com/product_info.php/protected-trustfire…

When it comes to chargers there are two I would recommend. If your after an Australian plug I would suggest these for $35. It comes with 2 charge slots and is high quality. (If you don't mind using a EU or other plug type and convert it you can find these for $20.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280781348446
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Soshine-SC-S2-Charger-18650-3-7v-…

Or if you use lots of batteries like me, I would suggest this 6-bay charger. The quality isn't as high as the 2 bay charger. But I use it primarily and it's still a really good charger.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330660468376

I have also bought from all the above sellers, except the $20 soshine eBay one. And there trustworthy,

    • Would you be able to recommend a torch? I need something for my father in-law who needs a good torch for his job as a pest controller. I.e. he crawls under houses and needs to get a good look in dark caveties.

  • Any opinions comparing to this WF-501B for $11.99 on ebay? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/290654219398
The 501B looks like it has a smaller reflector..

  • Can someone point me to a very floody torch that is also compact and reliable?

  • Anyone got any recommendations for a bright spotlight under $70 in Australia?

Want as much candlelight power to flood an entire and lumens to light up that forest. But also be battery efficient.

    • +1

Take a look at my comment. The torch I mention is pretty bright but not quite like a spotlight.
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/74548#comment-943649

When I was younger I had a 1 million candlepower torch. I think it cost $40 from Harris Scarfs. It was really bright, shined a beam through the sky. It was yellow and was over 8 years ago. I haven't seen them around lately.

EDIT: I'd check Super Cheap Auto, they have one advertised for $18 in their online SA/QLD/TAS catalogue http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/catalogue-qld-sa-tas.aspx (page 13) you should check the catalogue for your state and see if you can find it http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/catalogue.aspx.

NOTE: The one at SuperCheap Auto is half a million, I cannot comment on this, I just guess it will be as half as powerful as my old torch.

  • WARNING GUYS!
Mine arrived today, and I pulled it apart for a look.
Design is OK, but I fear it will dim soon due to bad assembly.

The star is just pushed into the pill. No thermal paste anywhere, and only the refector holding the star in place.
With something as powerful as an XM-L, thats not good enough.

I will be putting thermal paste in: between star and pill, and on the threads. And will glue the star into place.

    • How can I put thermal paste between the star and the pill? I can't disassemble anything beyond the twisting parts?

      • The two holes in the pill will let you unscrew it from within the body. You'll need to desolder at least one of the wires on the star also to flip it up and add the thermal paste. With a bit of luck you may be able to reach down from the front to desolder and resolder but would be easier to remove the pill.

        • Note: use the holes on the back of the pill to unscrew it, for less chance of damage than the front ones.
I just used needle-nose tweezers, it was not tight.

I did not need to desolder, as there was enough slack in the wires. Just lifted the star and applied paste with a small flat blade. Then press firmly to squeeze it as close to the pill as possible.

        • I don't suppose you'd care to throw up a few photos of what and how to do this for those of us that haven't a flapping clue what a pill or star etc is :)

        • There is a wealth of information on the internet already. There is nothing special about this particular torch. GIYF.

The star is the 6-pointed aluminium disc that the LED is bonded to, to make it easier to mount on a heatsink.
Just stick some thermal paste between it and the next part so it does not get so hot.
Toothpaste would be a massive improvement over just air.

Well got mine today, 13 days from when they shipped it (16 from order). Branded Rong Li
Same as manic, the led is just sitting there held in place by the wires soldered to it. I don't think the reflector even contacts it, so will probably be doing the same thing, dropping a little thermal paste behind it.
