      60Hz coffee has better taste

Only if you like your coffee with greater frequency

      Brilliant…it makes 50 coffee's a second!

Shut up and take my money!

I'm no expert but I think the consensus is that 15 Bar pressure produces foam AND bitter tasting coffee

    • +1

Well it's using pressurised baskets (which you should use a coarser grind for) to avoid bitterness, and which require higher pressure. But yes, ideally you'd want unpressurised basket and around 9 bars. But then you need a decent grinder to grind fine enough to get a decent extraction. This is aimed towards those buying pre-ground supermarket coffee, like the guy in the video.

      • What's the physical difference with an unpressurised basket. Size of the holes?

Just picked up a BES870 for nothing. Has no group handle. So need a group handle and basket. Any tips on where to get one. Basic entry level unpressurised basket and group handle. Cheers.

Pressurised baskets are double walled. One side has lots of holes, and the bottom has just one where the espresso is forced out of.

Not familiar with the BES870 specifically, but I wouldn't recommend starting with bottomless portafilter unless you mind making a mess or want to spend a long time dialling in your shots.
This says compatible with BES870XL. Not sure if that's the same. But you'd want something like that. Comes with unpressurised basket.

Not a question of the size of the holes.

Pressurized baskets on these machines have both limited coverage (the holes are restricted to a small area of the basket bottom itself) plus the basket is a two-part arrangement (actually more but two main parts) which gives you the basket bottom with limited coverage as described above that’s fitted inside a sleeve with a single hole which is what aerates the coffee and why you get that stupid foam that’s supposed to resemble crema.

These work ok with unpressurised but it can take a bit of fiddling to get an ideal result and even at best it’s kind of ordinary. Ok but ordinary (and pretty small shots from a 50mm portafilter).

          Edit: Nigel’s onto it above

He sounds clueless about making coffee…

    • +4

Right?! Not exactly James Hoffmann over here. I certainly wouldn't be buying an "expresso" machine based on his opinions.

Please don't buy this. It's not worth the money and frustration

I got one like this around 2 years ago. Use it around 5 times a day. Still running with no issues. Can make a decent cup of coffee if you don't mind manual. As a matter of fact I personally consider the fact that it's manual on the "pros" side rather then "cons", with some practice I can make a better tasting cup of coffee than with a fully-automatic $3000+ coffee machine I have at work. And it's not that hard to do.

    • You cant make a good coffee with an auto..period. Auto's make 'ok' coffee well.

No control over tamp, pucks are small diameter yet deep and its a pressurised filter system.

Grind proper espresso fine, and you will need to clean the brew unit every time. Otherwise it clogs (as there is no back flush system). Which is more hassel than a manual.

Im amazed no one has made a decent auto. Wouldnt take much tweaking.

This is Australian Version of Swan Retro Coffee sold in the UK https://www.techadvisor.com/article/723145/swan-retro-espres… , I make one coffee in the morning and its perfect for that . You can change to non pressurised portafilter if you want . Just need to buy a decent grinder which is a must for any coffee machine .

    But hey its $69.

    • Did you manage to find a non pressurised basket?

      • +1

I am planning to buy one from Amazon , 51mm and try how it goes . Will update my experience here

  • I need to buy a group handle and basket for a BES870. Cheaper to buy this than just a handle and basket. Unless im looking in the wrong places.

Never give up a Breville espresso machine for a Kogan. I've reported you to the mods.

    • I had a very similar machine a few years ago from KMart - pretty sure the basket is 51mm and BES870 is 53mm. Commercial standard is 58mm.

    • How many lobes does the Breville have?
