Techfast Build issues - Computer Black screen & Restarting

Was wondering if anyone has been having similar issues with their Techfast builds.

Had purchased the 3080 build from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674093

Shortly after receiving the system in March, the computer would be constantly having a blue screen WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, shutting down and restarting.

I sent the computer back to Techfast RMA and they found the AIO cooler to have been incorrectly configured which had been causing the CPU to overheat.

I've had no issues from April til now where:

Over the past 2 weeks, the system has started having a new issue where my monitors will shut off but the computer will be still running.

What's happening is:
1. I have 3 monitors setup which will all shut off at the same time.
2. The keyboard and mouse will still be lit up but keys like Num pad, scroll lock won't be responsive.
3. The computer will either still run with no screens turning on and i'll have to force it off by holding the power button OR the computer will reset itself after a few minutes (1/10 times the computer restarts itself, other times I need to manually shut it off).

I also haven't tweaked any settings on the computer; overclocking etc. It's only been used for web-browsing and light-gaming.

Is this a hardware issue?

Have reached out to Techfast but was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience with their Techfast purchases?

  • Nearly 12 months … congratulations 🎉

    • Luckily within 12 months.

    • My 3 techfast machines are over 3 years old without a single issue

  • I would update the video drivers first. Then check i this issue corresponds to a windows update.

    • Thanks, it had started after straight after a Windows update 2 weeks ago, what would you suggest I do?

      • what would you suggest I do?

delete the video drivers and reinstall them.

        • Thanks, gave it a go but there was no change.

          • @Baebs: I am no expert and dread troubleshooting PC problems, without spare parts for isolating cause, don't have much to go on.

I googled "nvlddmkm cannot be found" from your other comment, its great to have some lead.

Maybe try changing back to previous driver, is at least something you can do without spare parts. Perhaps the drivers were updated with the window update, is that a thing? Although maybe the windows recovery installation already rolled back the drivers. There are other suggestions in the google search results. Who knows if any of them will work?

I guess windows has a rollback / restore point mechanism to go back to before the update, but I don't know much of it. Might not be able to, since using the recovery window.

It is all very stressful and time consuming.

            • @pnt: Yes I had run the computer after the recovery for a day without updating or reinstalling drivers and found no difference unfortunately.

The shut-down would occur before and after the updates.

Still waiting for a response from techfast.

              • @Baebs: Changing back to an older drivers is my best guess. Maybe something from before June 2022. Only a guess.

  • It sounds like its going into sleep mode have you checked the power settings? Does it do this when idling or when you are sitting there using it?
Does it do it if only one monitor is connected? try one monitor in a different input at a time
Are you running the latest graphics drivers/bios or upgraded lately?

    • It happens whilst i'm still using it which is frustrating. The computer shut off twice whilst typing out the post which is incredibly frustrating and it's unusable.

Graphics drivers and windows. are fully updated.

Last night I had reinstalled windows via the Recovery settings and the issue is still happening but more frequent now.
      Now:
      1. Monitors will all shut off but keyboard and mouse will still be responsive.
      2. After a minute the computer will restart itself.

Still waiting for a reply from Techfast.

  • Google how to access the "event viewer" within Windows, then check the System log for any errors that correspond in time to the issues you're having.

This may give you a better idea of what the issue is.

    • Recorded a video of the issues, there was a few with "nvlddmkm" error but I have since updated the graphics drivers and the issue is still happening.

      • If you're getting the nvlddmkm error when you're experiencing your black screen issue, then you're most likely looking at either a bad GPU (or unstable overclock) or bad video driver.

Assuming you haven't overclocked the GPU or messed with BIOS settings, the best way to test would be a clean install of Windows. If you can get your hands on some form of spare hard drive, you can try a fresh install of Windows on that without risking losing any data on your main drive.

        • Thanks for the reply, I haven't messed with BIOS or tweaked any settings like overclocking etc.

I had reset windows via the Recovery settings but with the option of saving my files etc.

After that I have updated windows and my graphics drivers. The issue is happening more frequently now.

Previously when typing this post, I could perhaps go up an hour or more of uptime without the black screen happening. It is however now happening within 10 mins.

          • @Baebs: I'd be leaning towards the GPU being faulty then at this point.

I recall having a similar issue with nvlddmkm crashing (resulting in black screens) a few years ago. Usually it would recover and display a message saying the driver had a problem but not always. I don't specifically remember what the fix was unfortunately (I have a vague feeling it was PSU related). There's a few things you could look at:

    • Roll back to an older nvidia driver (though from your video you have other drivers crashing so I don't think this is the cause)
    • Update the chipset drivers (from manufacturers website, Ive seen issues with drivers installed by windows update)
    • Updating the bios
    • Reseat the power connectors on the graphics card, motherboard, harddrives if you are comfortable with doing so
    • Test with another PSU if you have one

Given you are still under warranty keep hitting up techfast in the meantime.

    jiff jei? milk man right?

I would recommend hitting up techfast before warranty expires in 2 weeks.

    Possibly PSU or GPU issue.
    This forum would help.
