    Panel pixel Response time?
    Edit: 13.5-22.3ms

    • +4
      • +3

9.6ms-14.4ms from notebook check. The earlier info was from laptopmedia review

        • +4

          40.9 cm (16.1") diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), 144 Hz, 7 ms response time, IPS, micro-edge, anti-glare, Low Blue Light, 300 nits, 100% sRGB

          • +2

@Brrrrt: Advertised response time is unfortunately poorly correlated with actual measured response time.

1.1k mate what more do you want at this price.

      • Yes

      • +35

        4k oled with a 4080ti. And 64GB of RAM. 🙃

      • +1

There are devices like Microsoft Surface where they give you maximum screen for the money. Of course, they are not for gaming but I find use for them. Not everyone games.

        • I also use surface for this reason. Those of us that are "gamers" will just use a desktop that is magnitudes faster than any laptop

      • Brrrt!

    • -1

It's like looking through fly wire.

    • +8

It's 16 inch display with a RTX3060. 1080p is the sweet spot. The 3060 is going to struggle for 4K gaming.

    • +4

It only has a 3060, so FHD is an appropriate resolution. Unless you enjoy a slideshow, that is.

      • -1

You can lower resolutions on games.

        • -1

then why do you even need 1080p? get a 720p screen if you're going to lower the resolution.

          • @gizmomelb: It seems incredibly obvious but you may want to do something other than gaming with your laptop at some points gizmomelb. My laptop has a 4K screen and I appreciate the higher resolutions when doing 3D modelling but when I play games, it is at 1080p. I wasn't saying to game lower than 1080p, I said "You can lower resolutions on games", as in, you can have a 1440p screen or a 4K screen and lower the games resolution to 1080p or anything you desire to get the performance / visual payoff you choose.

            • @FabMan: Lowering the resolution below its native resolution, though may give a performance boost, will make the display pixelated and horrible to game on.

              • @MuddyClear: "horrible to game on" well, that is your opinion, as I find lowering resolutions on higher resolution screens perfectly fine in many games. I personally think low framerates makes gaming a horrible experience, I'd rather have lower visual quality in exchange for performance, 1080p gaming on a 4K screen is perfectly fine as you get a nice 4 to 1 pixels. Outside of gaming, at 15.6" FHD seems low res to me as when 3D modelling, I see all the jaggies on the wireframe models.

                • @FabMan: Well I can’t comment on lowering resolutions on 4K screens as I simply haven’t tested it out, but in this specific situation where the screen is already at 1080p I would recommend against it.

                  • @MuddyClear: I completely agree about playing games at lower resolutions than 1080p for a RTX 3060, seems unnecessary, and I wouldn't advocate for it.

      RX5500M. 3060 laptop is roughly 70% faster.

    • +10

If one is really missing 300$ it’s okay but you miss out a lot more than 38% price difference:

      • it’s a 3060 even at this crippled form is far faster than a 5500

      • 5800h vs 5600h

      • only 256gb storage & 8gb ram. Also the ram is two 4gb sticks so you need to replace it whole instead of buying a single 8gb down the line

      • 250nit 45%ntsc panel vs 300nit 72 ntsc% on this one

    • +4

      Absolutely worth the extra $300.

  • +1

    Is this faster than rtx1650 or 3050 because it’s only 95w 3060

    • +4

      Yes much faster

    • +3

1650 is worse than 1060, 3050 doesn’t even beat out a 1660TI. 3060 crushes these two by far. 4gb vram doesnt really get you anywhere nowadays.

And also the max wattage possible for 3050 is like 95w (or was it 85w) so yeah a low powered 3060 doesn’t mean it’s lower wattage than a 3050

  • I'm after an everyday work laptop, should I go for this?

    • +9

Not unless you do gaming everyday

    • +9

It's a little heavy for a work laptop and the screen wobble seems annoying. Can't really beat the specs for that price though. Nice battery life and a 3060 if you want to game.

      • How long is the battery life if not gaming

        • +2

Looking at around 8-9 hours for casual browsing/light workloads.

    • +1

If you're using CAD/Video or photo Editing or gaming
      Then yes.

      Otherwise no.

  • +18

Much better pick than a similarly priced nitro 5 deals of before. Only downside for it’s price point is that it’s gerry.

    • 5800H 8c16t 16mbL3. Doesn’t get much better for 1.1k

    • 95w 3060 no mux. Again cant ask for more at this price. Good on HP for making both video out ports connected directly to the dgpu. Didn’t skimp out here with HDMI2.1 and DP1.4

    • 144hz 100%srgb. Subpar reponse times but again best at this price

    • jarrods review model come with the single ranked x8 memory but hard to say it will be for these later batches as x8 8gb kits aren’t being made anymore

    • only problem is screen wobble is horrific on this machine (but so is basically every omen sku nowadays so it’s not a victus only issue neither)

Worth a bite if you missed the kraken deal.

    • Just for clarification, x8 rank is the RAM you want right? Much better than x16.

Not sure if single vs dual is as big of a performance disparity compared to 8x vs 16x.

      • +1

Yes x8 is the stuff you want but most laptops dont come with that no more not legions rogs nor alienwares so it’s very unlikely hp would go out of their way to source it for these budget skus

    • +1

This seems a better deal than the Kraken IMO.

      • +10

I wouldn’t say so, the krakens screen is worth more than $100 difference easy. Plus mux wattage gpu, 11800H is also better for gaming with 50% larger l3 cache-you do lose out on battery life its a catch 22, and per mech key rgb, and kraken have better build quality. You do have to get your own windows key and extra ram and that’s about the only issue(s)

        • +1

+1 for the kraken / Intel nuc

        • +3

Please stop talking, you're making me regret not jumping on it :((

          • @dsar: Hopefully we'll see more of them…

            • @Grish: Yeah. Im hoping too. My god daughter was asking for a laptop fror christmas.

        • Jumped on that Kraken deal and it's really good! Got a tad hot but laptop stand has it sitting around 70 degrees.

        • Yeah agreed - the only real criticism that I have of the Kraken is that the internal speakers are sh*t and I mean they are so crap it's hard to believe.. although I am coming from a macbook pro, so my expectations are high.

The nuc x51 is really a sleeper, so maybe that's why it was not so popular? I mean it could have had a 10 bit HDR screen with dimming, but that's the $2000 price bracket.

I'd paid $1270 total with a stick of ram and aa copy of windows 10 pro ($20ish) from G2A thrown in.

      • BTW mine was not even aa kraken, it was a straight up intel nuc x15 in the original packing with the extra 8gbs of ram installed

      • Kraken was better imo

        • Isn't it the same thing? Where the NUCx15 was the 'more pure' version.

      • Yes HP Victus is a better deal

        Cons of the Kraken:
        - bulky chassis (Boring)
        - poor webcam
        - poor keyboard
        - poor sound
        - no activated OS

        • +1

Bulky? The Kraken is not bulky at all. It's actually quite slim and light, for a gaming laptop. The chassis design is great.
The Victus is very noticeably larger and heavier, even without being especially chunky. That 16inch screen makes it a bigger unit.

The other points are pretty much standard for gaming laptops, except for windows

    • Thanks for the write up.

The Harvey Norman description says 1x SuperSpeed USB Type-C, is this different to thunderbolt? Can it be charged via the USB C port?

      • +2

It’s different to TB. Cant be charged with type c port. Superspeed type c = usb c 3.2 gen2x1 = usb c 10gbps (theoretical speed)

        • Great, thanks @Brrrrt

        • Can the usbc port be used with a dock?

        • Gday Brrrrt its me again lol. So if a particular kraken has TB4 but no superspeed type c, you cant charge it with usbc?

          • @H8Pootin: Right so heres a outlier as well, one of the features of TB is ability to provide 5a/100w of charging through USB PD protocol in additional to the fast speeds. But the kraken-intel x15 does not support it. Im not well versed in it to know if the PD charging is a requirement of TB4 but it is certainly a bit of a let done that the Kraken does not support it.

Also I wouldnt necessarily say the kraken does not have superspeed type c the TB4 is in everyway better than the latter and downwards compatible haha

    • Just out of curiosity what was the Kraken deal ? Link ?

    • +8

I got one of these a few months ago at about this price, with 250nit screen. I was really after the Kraken but the Victus deal was too good.
Aaaaand I just replaced it with the Kraken, because that deal was also too good.

I'd still recommend this though, on it's own. This is a good deal. It's a good laptop, and I never had any issues with it. It's powerful, runs cool and quiet, and has a solid build. The screen wobble stuff is less of an issue than you'd think and isn't really indicative of how the rest of it feels.

I just wanted the Kraken because it's smaller and lighter, has a nicer screen, and a more premium feeling. But it's also a little buggy and gets louder, and way hotter to touch. Kinda makes me feel like it's hitting limits more, while the Victus did it's thing comfortably. Never even checked temps on that, but I've been watching closely on the Kraken. I've also had more driver issues etc with the Kraken. Nothing I can't deal with, but the HP was more hassle free.

I'm basically expecting the Kraken to be a nice machine that requires more of my IT guy efforts over time, more ups and downs. While the Victus is more of a Toyota, nothing remarkable, but does it all pretty well.

Also I never mistyped as much on the Victus as I did trying to write this post damn.

Where can you buy Harvey norman gift cards ?

    • +1

I know ShopBack Super Swap cards can be swapped for HN cards, but only 2% cashback

  • +11

Anywhere to price match instead of giving Harvey monies?

    • +2

My crude google search didn’t return any hits-at least nowhere where one can price match, looks like a jerry exclusive model as have always been the case.

  • +6

I have had nothing but bad experience with HP laptops. once bitten twice shy.

    • Ditto, been fooled a fool again, 2 compaqs and a HP, never again

      • Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me…you can't get fooled again.

    • I've had nothing but good experience with HP laptops. Used my one from 2013 this morning and going strong

    • +1

Laptops in general crash and burn - any gaming machine should be a desktop unless you really need to be portable.
Do not expect a long life, as overheating usually becomes a big issue on gaming laptops.

  • How's Harvey Norman with faults/warranty stuff?

    • +3

Wouldn’t bother - go to manufacturer directly

      • Thumbs up, Says HN's warranty department 😆

        • +1

as someone who has been on both sides of the HN fence, I would actively do anything I could do to NOT have to interact with the tech team tbh

    • +2

I recently took a failed laptop back to HN at 16 months old and they happily took it and replaced dead HDD for free (as they should under ACL).

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one

  • +1

Best ever gaming laptop deal at this price.

  • +4

Looks great but if only the kraken went on sale again… I would rather the extra few hundred $ for better build, 2k, full wattage 3060, bigger battery and .5kg lighter but that's me.

    • Yeah I'd probably pay an extra $200 on top of this price for slightly better spec.

    • Kraken m15 is completely out of stock and is unlikely to get restocked at sale price any time soon post x-mas

    • Link to this kraken ?

  • +3

3060 under $1100, super good deal?

    • +3

I say it’s in second place right after the 1199 kraken deal. If you missed that and want a rig now this is it. Doesn’t get better than this at the 1.1k mark.

      • Missed the Kraken deal.. Probably having to hold longer LOL.

      • +1

So I got a Nitro 5 build quality & thermals aside with i9-11900H, RTX 3060 which I have vBIOS'ed to 130W (original 95W), 16GB 3200mhz, 165Hz 1440p 3ms, 512 NVMe SSD. For $1150. This was during black friday. Was it a good deal? In my mind it was. I didn't even see the Kraken deal till it was over. Thanks brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt

        • +2

Any 3060 rig at 1.1k mark is a god damn deal. You did just fine mate

        • Curious as to what that deal was. Don't remember one posted for black friday. Thx

          • @Chicago1: Bing Lee mate of a mate inside job not for the public

  • If this was 1440p screen, I would buy this but if Harvey are doing this laptop at this price, I have a feeling that prices are coming down and I would wait for slightly better spec around same price or slightly more.

    • +4

3060 is shit not optimal for 1440 though.

  • +3

Was about to pull the trigger, until I searched through past deals and found this…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_la1rFDM2U

    Saved myself $1.1k. feels good
