Ah, breaker one-nine, this here's the Rubber Duck. You gotta copy on me, Pig Pen, c'mon? Ah, yeah, 10-4, Pig Pen, fer shure, fer shure. By golly, it's clean clear to Flag Town, c'mon. Yeah, that's a big 10-4 there, Pig Pen, yeah, we definitely got the front door, good buddy. Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy…

nice deal if you have place to mount it on your dash. If not, better look for ones with controls/display on speaker, not on main unit. You mount main unit hidden somewhere (under dash). Like Uniden UH8060S

    • Mine happened to be exactly the same size as the ashtray. Old car though.

  • Just wondering between this and Uniden - any idea which one works better?

They're both good brands and well regarded in the 4x4 world. You wouldn't notice any difference in performance.

I would steer clear of Oricom, however.

They're both good. "Better" performance will be mostly due to how good the antenna is, and its mounting location.

Edited - my experience with Oricom in 3 cars has been good.

Same performance.. features are what matter when comparing the unit itself. Ease of use, controls (I have GME 4500s, I prefer rotary dials), remote or dash mount… All brands make 5watt versions, the legal limit.

As said above, the antenna is the most important item for how well it transmits and receives. At 150, if this suits you, its a good buy for a complete setup. Antenna is an AE4018K2 with a barrel spring base, about $140 on its own at Autobarn (hunt online, they are closer to $100). Just see if it suits your needs, and install. $50 for radio is a steal.

GME is Aussie though. Most of their units are made here still. For me, Icom (Jap) > GME (Aussie) > Uniden (China) > Oricom (China). Thats ignoring less common brands like Kenwood and Motorola.

      • Makes sense thanks!

GME well regarded brand? What an absolutely bizarre thing to read.
They're cheaper for a reason, high failure rates especially the accessories, and only the last stage of assembly is performed in Australia so they can slap a made in australia logo on it.
Fine at this price point though.

Gme are one of the more expensive brands. Which brands are regarded as better? I'd love to know more about this high rate of failure you're talking about. I've certainly not come across that. There are no other consumer brands that are as good.

  • cant find stock, at least not the stores near me. And delivery doesnt seem to work. I should have clicked yesterday, small enough and cheap enough to buy and carry as a spare.
