BYOD School 2-in-1 Laptop Advice

Hey guys,

Im look for a new 'BYOD' school laptop. I would prefer to be in the $1200 range but if there is a big jump for $200-300 more I would consider it.

Although its for school, it would probably will be used for some gaming.

My child is going into year 9. It would be great the laptop would last him to the end of school.

minimum requirements are:
Touchscreen 2-in-1
13"
i5 (11 gen) or Ryzen 5 5500
8gb
500gb HDD/256 SSD
good battery to get through the school day.
no Chromebook/ARM/MacBook

Im looking at:

ASUS VivoBook R5 5600H/8GB/512 SSD $1279

ASUS VivoBook R7 5800H/16/512 $1599

HP Pav i7-1255U/16/256. $1498

HP Pav i5-1240P/16/512 @1279

Dell Inspiron i7-1260P/16/512 $1494

Of course I am more than happy to hear of any other possible choices.

Thx

Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2. Bought one for my kids the other day as she is going to year 10 next year needing a BYOD. Ryzen 5 5650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD for ~$1300 on eBay.

Check grays if you would consider refurb. Got a Thinkpad L13 gen 2(non yoga) with ryzen 5850u,16gb 512gb this month for $660 inc shipping to NT. Bidded $435ish.

  • always good deals on the Dell outlet.

  • HP Pav i7-1255U/16/256. $1498

    HP Pav i5-1240P/16/512 @1279

heads up, the 12th gen i5 with P on the end will outperform i7 with U on the end, by a lot.

  • From what I know, it may be difficult to find a device that is decent for gaming whilst still being pretty light and portable - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/742180.

Not sure about gaming performance, but I bought a HP Envy x360 for a school device - https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-envy-x360-13-3-inch-r5-56…

It was $998 during the BF sales plus 10% back in HN gift cards.

HP have refurbished models for $999 - https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/hp-envy-x360-convert-13-ay1002…

I do school tech support and run a byod program for 7-12.

If you get a gaming device it will rarely last 2 periods without them having to plug in and there is never enough power points to go around.
The chargers are heavier and the constant pluging in and out and being in a school bag means they end up with frayed power cords that need to be replaced within 2 years.

12th gen i5 is amazing value for the performance and useability compared to the previous generation.

My suggestion is find something that is usb-c charge and they will be able to borrow/share power with friends easily.

  • Microsoft Surface Pro

    • Surface pro is very nice, but kids tend to break it. Lots of Pros with broken screens at my kids' school. And they are very expensive to repair.
Surface laptop or book is safer, i think.
