I wouldn't put too much stock into that story.
Both Google and Alexa have the same issue; they can't monetise the voice platform to its full potential, yet both are actively engaged in developing the Matter framework.There's been plenty of chicken little stories in the past, usually directed at Google.
the difference is that the layoffs are real, so it remains to be seen.
i always have low expectations of google, even when i pay for their commercial tier products/services. i always expect that things will change and the service might get canned. in a convoluted way, I didnt end up with all eggs in one basket, as i diversified where i put my money with, which isn't entirely a bad thing.
Kmart have a floor standing one, about double the size, for the same price. Looks very similar, if not identical, from memory.
