$10 & free delivery when you sign up to Amazon Prime

  • Can you pair with Google Mini or Google home?

    • perhaps latter when it gets a protocol update. It is listed as having future update to be a controller.

I signed up prime for a month $6.99 (I think), got this for $10. End up this + 1 month prime $16.99. Connected this yesterday, sounds is pretty good for the size.

If you don't know what I mean as a streamer…

Connect the Echo's 3.5mm output to an amp's 3.5mm aux input.

Tell the Echo, "Alexa, play xxxxx on Spotify/whatever streaming service."

Sit back and enjoy good sound without your phone/PC being tied up.

    • Is there a way to have it still play out of the echo speaker at the same time it's connected to an external speaker/amp?

It's annoying to have to unplug it from the amp to use it as a normal home assistant when not listening to music

      • $17.50. Just buy 2 and have one to be the assistant and a second one to act solely as the input for your hifi

Tell the Echo, "Alexa, play xxxxx on Spotify/whatever streaming service."

Unfortunately it doesn’t work with all streaming services. For example; YouTube music.

      • Yeah, funnily enough Amazon and Google don’t play nicely together… corporate greed.

        • Not that long ago that Prime Video didn't work on Chromecast! Glad that one changed.

    • Is it possible to use this one as a home phone, without a cellphone connection?
      Thanks

      • If the other person you're calling has the Amazon app on their phone.

  • Hi, I've just arrived from the 19th century.

Can you give me a run down of some of the things you can do with these?

    • +7

      Use it as a projectile

You can speak to fair maiden Alexa without ever leaving your Victorian home!

    • +2

Bluetooth speaker - either connect phone, or use voice to ask it to play something. Ask it weather, news. Timers, alarms, reminders etc. Very handy in kitchen and/or bathroom.

If you have smart home stuff, it gets alot more useful. - Start/stop vacuum, control lights etc.

      Alternative Clay Pigeon.

We have one in our kitchen. Main use is "alexa play spotify".

It's also useful to tell my wife something from upstairs by "broadcasting" the message from my phone

Otherwise you can also build your shopping list with it which gets saved in the app… "alexa add milk to shopping list", then in store you can tick it off as you go

Can also turn TV and Lights on and off if they are "Smart" enough

But its absolute best use, as already noted, is as a projectile

Damn! Sounds like Alexa will asking for any spare change soon. It's losing $3b a quarter. I wonder what the story is going to be like when they finally give up. Maybe they'll just unlock it to home automation developers etc.

      • Or get a sweet sweet NASA contract

    • +1

Makes me wonder if they'll work at all if they decide to stop the service. Ideally it would still at least stream stuff but nothing's guaranteed with these live services!

Excellent deal. I particularly like it when my Echo, unprompted, joins in with conversation that I have with my family. It provides that reassurance that it’s looking after me and my best interests.

  • pretty amazing little device for the price.

  • Can the mic be turned off permanently?

I just want to stream Spotify to it by initiating on my phone. Is that possible?

Basically I want to use it like a chromecast audio

  • I use it mainly for audible and timer lol

  • No one has wondered about the price being so low? how do they make money? or why they let themself lose money?

    • +1

The link above, they are losing $3 billion a quarter selling these at a loss to people.

Playing the long game - Hoping to build detailed consumer profiles

    • Same reason MS and Sony sell consoles at a loss…

How long can Amazon keep these product going when losing $10b a year on them?

  • Can you use this as a computer speaker? Using cable not Bluetooth?

    • No, 3.5mm port output only. No input.

  • I bought 3 from bunnings when it was $19. Using it as home intercom system. Works ok, but not as good as voice recognition as google home mini.

They're closing alexa service down aren't they? huge losses.

  • According to news, Alexa is a colossal failure, a lot of people working on Alexa will be let go

  • could use JB Hi-fi Perks to buy it from JB Hi-fi for $7.5

    • how perks voucher is $10.

      • Exactly 17.50-10 is $7.5. you will pay $7.5, that's what I meant.
