Product description

Based on powerful real-life events, 'Chernobyl' dramatizes the story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history, the Ukraine nuclear plant disaster of April 1986. This five-part miniseries recounts the remarkable stories of the heroes who fought and fell to save Europe from an unimaginable disaster. Jared Harris portrays Valery Legasov, the Soviet scientist chosen by the Kremlin to investigate the accident to reveal how and why it happened. 'Chernobyl' tells a tale of lies and cowardice, of courage and conviction, and of human failure and human nobility.

    “Not great, not terrible”

    • +4

Out of curiosity what do you rate as Great?

    • +5

I think it’s great. Finished in one sitting.

    • +3

Is this a reference i missed nvm I assume I need to watch it first

      • +1

You'll know when you watch it

  • +21

    Great series, worth a watch.

    • +1

I was looking to re-watch it the other day……but on binge/foxtel so that was a hard no. This deal came through!!

  • -3

    amazing doco to watch

    • +11

      This is not a documentary.

      • +13

Are you suggesting that the citizens of the USSR didn't have English accents?

        • +1

I don't think they had English accent in the series, did they? Thought they had Russian/Ukrainian accent… But everyone speaking English was weird.
          Excellent series nevertheless

          • +1

@Mr Frodo: Fairly sure it was an English accent. I listened to the podcast a while back and it was a deliberate choice over a Russian/Slavic accent.

    • +2

Based on the real life event but not documentary.

      • A documentary film or documentary is a non-fictional motion-picture intended to "document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record".

        • +4

Exactly, so this is not a documentary.

        • +2

It's an interpretation, for example, it has a series of non-existing in real-life characters. The term would be Historical Realism, in the British tradition, trust me, I know this stuff. :-)

          • +1

@newcastledog: Yeah, excellent series with surprising attention to detail but there are still quite a few changes ranging from unavoidable to misleading. e.g. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48580177.amp

            • +2

@Sven Viking: There's a great series by a nuclear safety engineer dispelling a lot of the bs in the series https://youtu.be/qCp73zc1OLs.
Claiming meltdown hitting the water table would ignite a hydrogen bomb has to be one of the most absurd takes along with beta radiation (or any kind of radiation other than gamma) moving at the speed of light is another.

      • +1

Its not a documentary but its not far away from real events. Its definitely not something you can rely on for exact facts.

Like contagion, some bits are close enough to real life events to have that extra buzz though

        • Bah, better cancel my 5000 tons of boron and sand 😟

  • +4

I hardly watch TV. This I recommend.

  • +8

    3.6/5 show

    • +1

I personally thought it was 5/7

  • +9

this mini series scared me more than any other horror film ive ever watched

    • +2

It's a tough watch for sure. Depressing af.

  • +14

This show was extremely well done. The way they portrayed the response of the regime to the catastrophe was amazing.

    • Still amazes me that the guy who made this show specializes in comedy (he did the Hangover and Scary movie.)

He is now making The Last of Us, which looks epic.

  • +2

    It’s on binge

    • +5

      Disc will be watchable quality.

      • Both 1080p

        • +7

And the bitrate is low, comfortably worst quality of the mainstream AU streamers. Resolution isn’t everything.

          • @Randolph Duke: So true. Binge's video quality is terrible, I'd never pay for it in it's current state. I don't pirate anything really these days, but no way was I watching House of the Dragon on binge when I can download a version someone ripped off of HBO Max.

  • Great show. Struggled to get through the one where they were culling dogs though.

  • +2

I couldnt get over how most actors had english accents even though the characters were russian

    • +5

What did you think of Hunt For Red October?

    • +4

I found it confusing that they were even speaking english

      • +1

They weren't in the beginning… it clearly shows everyone speaking Russian, and then 'blends over' to English. I thought it was done very well.

  • Great show.

  • -1

    A blast from the past!

  • Amazing series - have watched it multiple times. Highly recommend.

  • -5

Worst event ever to had happened in mankind. A nail in the coffin for the USSR.

    • +10

      pretty terrible, but the worst?

Probably a few things above this just in the 20th century: e.g. 6 Million Jews being murdered

      • +3

and Keeping up with the Kardashians

    • +5

The Bhopal disaster gives it a pretty strong run for its money.

      • +2

How about the invention and global spread of Tetraethyllead… just even consider the number of stupid posts across all social media that we all have to deal with now as a result!

    • Worst event ever? Come on man.

Are you one of those people that say literally as a preface to any particular struggle you may be having?

      "Like, I'm literally dying here!"

Pump the brakes on the drama man :).

  • Was it available on Netflix or prime before?

    • -2

Maybe to buy on Prime, but it's a HBO show. You'll more likely find it on Stan.

  • +2

Looking forward to the sequel, "Chernobyl 2: Zaporizhzhia Boogaloo"

  • I lived in a neighbouring country. Years after, you couldn't find any salt without iodine. Even now, almost everyone in the country still uses Iodised salt because of it. The memories remain.

  • +2

The Podcast is well worth listening too as well.
    Snip:
The official podcast of the miniseries Chernobyl, from HBO and Sky. Join host Peter Sagal (NPR’s “Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me!”) and series creator, writer and executive producer Craig Mazin after each episode as they discuss the true stories that shaped the scenes, themes and characters.

    • Beyond watching a fictionalised series, I'm not sure what knowledge can be gleaned from a podcast from the people claiming meltdown to the water table would have ignited a nuclear explosion.

      • +2

There was a great dialogue giving insight as to why the plot deviated from the truth as well as solid reasoning for keeping British accents. Genuinely compelling!

        • Yep, great companion to the show.

  • This was a great movie!

  • +2

Great series, very well made. One of the best series I’ve seen.
Tough watch however, no point in owning for me as once was enough.

  • +1

Great series, the same producer is now making the Last of Us, one to look out for.

  • One of the best shows.
