tomorrow is the day i finally get my big screen. going to go for the sony this time I think.

I love my LG, but anything but a Samsung would be good (Samsung will stream ads to your TV)

      • +2

haha mate doesn't get me started on Samsung. I'm currently at war with them over the warranty on my 5k fridge. which has been repaired 4 times in under 2 years
not to mention every Samsung tv dad got that was 75-85 inches ended up shitting them selfs within 1-2 years.
he's got the 85 inch x90j now and it's has been flawless.

        • +1

Sony is awesome! I'm a big fan and even tho I own the x9000h that "gamers" hate lol, I really find it an amazing experience.

        • $5k fridge? 10 year warranty minimum!

          • +1

@hamwhisperer: The ACL really disrupted Samsung's after sales plan/model. My parents had a side by side fridge that started frosting up and because it was literally outside the 2 year warranty by 40 days Samsung refused to budge on fixing the issue. This was before ACL came in and forced all the bad ones to have to change their behaviour.

I got a Westinghouse fridge when I moved out and its been like 7 years without any issues and is super quiet. But unfortunately a big company like Samsung take over industries. They've taken over the android smartphone industry, and now slowly the appliances and tv industry so eventually when Sony gets sqeezed out by Samsung or dies like their Xperia division, we'll have to buy from Samsung again.

            • @Fuzor:

The ACL really disrupted Samsung's after sales plan/model.

Their business model is based on volume, sell something mediocre in every category under the sun and hope that the familiar branding will get you by all the poor quality issues.
Their service dept is also abysmal, I've had a few bad experiences with them and will never buy their products again.

      • So does LG and Sony..

      • +1

Heard nothing but misery with Samsung products the last 5 years. The Ads thing is mind blowing. You're not the first I've heard say that.

        No chance man, nope!

      • All of the major TV brands now have some form of advertising subsidy. Anything with Google TV (Sony) will rather obviously be heavily Google Ad based. Samsung pushes Ads direct to the homebar (even retroactively on older models), LG seems to be the best currently in Australia, but based on overseas I wouldn't rely on that lasting forever.

It's one of the things that gets under my skin every time people go gaga over $30 Fire TV and Chromecasts…if you're not paying…you're the product.

        • The difference is, I've heard Samsung inject ads in other places where you wouldn't expect it. Well beyond what Chromecast does.

At least they did years ago. Dunno if anymore

  • The LG OLEDs were copypastatypo published with a 200Hz sticker in the last catalogue posted

Copied text from the Sony 200Hz models by the marketers?

  • What time does this sale start online?

  • +1

And here I was thinking nothing was gonna make me sad I already bought my TCL 65" C835 for $1300. But the 65" X90K for $1888 is actually making me think twice. Maybe I should cancel my TCL on backorder and get this.

    • You can return goods within timeframes if not happy with your purchase!

      • Really? Is that in general or just JB? I certainly cannot with Betta. They said it was only possible if the box hasn't been opened. On their website they also mentioned a 25% restocking fee:

A restocking fee of 25% of the GST inclusive purchase price of the item will apply to the return, unless the cost to collect/return the item is greater, in which case the cost to collect/return the item will be the amount of the restocking fee. The restocking fee will be deducted from the amount credited to you in relation to the return.

        • +1

Yeah there is no legal requirement unless the product is faulty.

          • @RI4V4N: Customer has the right to change their mind (within a timeframe) - Australian Consumer law

            • +2

              @msjb:

Customer has the right to change their mind

feel free to link that that consumer law.

(spoiler alert - Change of mind returns are not 'law'.. they are policy which some retailers choose to offer, but are not legally obliged to)

    • +8

Sony is leagues above TCL. I returned my TCL and didn’t regret.

    • +4

Mini led vs better brand. Decisions decisions….

      • There that's the only thing stopping me atm.

        • +1

I would still go TCL unless x95k is not that expensive.

  • Slightly off topic but someone may know the answer here. The house I just moved into had a TV wall mount already installed. It holds my 55 inch TV no issues but I am unsure what the weight/size limit is and the realtors have been absolutely useless in contacting the previous owners. Would anyone know if a wall mount, installed on a load bearing wall would have any issues holding a 75 inch TV?

    • +3

75” is fair bit bigger in size so most likely would be safe to get a new bracket, Bunnings have some good mounts for good price, I mounted our spare 75” with mount from Bunnings I think it was around $55ish.

Be vary of Vesa mount size but my guess would be it will need 600x400 whereas for 55” would be a-lot smaller, and yes they all are rated for different weight

      • You have a spare 75" ?

        • Haha did until kid smashed a bowl into it, now have to get some replacement for it.

    • +1

This really just depends on the mount, upload a pic of you can, or try to match it with an identical mount ona google image search or on ebay and see if you can find the specs.

I had to buy a heavy duty mount for my 55" plasma back in the day and being a heavy beast it could easily hold a 75" LCD, which tend to be much lighter and usually don't have a glass panel protecting the screen

    • +1

I am not an engineer, but I would think that walls should generally hold up okay so long as it's not just attached to dry wall. The mount on the other hand may be cause for concern if it's one of thse ones that have arms and can pull out from the wall.

    • +1

Only real issue would be the mounting hole spacing.

Should be fine, anything that fits a 55" would generally be a 600x200mm plate or similar which should also be similar for a 75" but you would need to check the VESA specs on both your mount (just measure it) and whichever TV you look at.

As far as weight/load, as long as it's mounted securely to the wall (not just in drywall), it's extremely unlikely you'd have any issues. Most mounts that would have VESA points suitable for a 75" would be rated for 100Kg or over.

    • Would anyone know if a wall mount, installed on a load bearing wall would have any issues holding a 75 inch TV?

Probably be fine, but you could always take off the current TV, apply a bit of pressure and feel what sort of give it has in it. You'll know straight away if it's solid or not.
If its screwed into anything other than just plaster it shouldn't move.

  • +7

Would be good to have some exact model names in the title/post.

  • +7

Do people upgrade TVs all the time? I see a trend in OzB that whenever a TVs on sale, everyone jump to it. Just curious.

    • Everyone is an addict here. Including myself. Cant pass up on a good deal.

    • +1

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/stats

375,648 users on Ozbargain. Why do you assume it's the same people over and over?

The average tv post has about 30 comments on them from a quick look. You could have 12000 TV posts and still have entirely unique users commenting about buying a new tv every time.

      • I Always see the SAME PEOPLE in the comments

    • +1

Last time I bought a TV was in 2016. I’ve just been on the hunt for a new one in the last month.

    • For me it's just day-dreaming.

Our Sony 46" probably turned 10 this year or last. I'm not allowed to get a new screen until it dies. It was a reasonably high end 46" when we originally bought it. Hasn't shown signs any issues at all. Many people seem to be happy with a cheap screen, but even 10 years on this screen soundly beats any current cheapy in all but online features I think.

Funny…it seemed huge originally, but now we're hankering after something a little bigger. Going by my own research, I determined that a 75" would actually be good in our smallish lounge room - for cinema use at least. X90K looks like it would suit us - and is $2,679 at Costco atm too, beating JB's price above quite nicely. I might e-mail that to my wife!

  • +1

Seems like some of these are discounted already on the JB site? Or do I need to update my glasses prescription?

  • +4

No love for Sony 65" A95K?

    • Holding out for this as well :(

      • $4788 at GGC or $4660 (after $200 GC card) at VideoPro, but yeah, still not great.

I'd buy if it was low $4000s

    • Yeah was hoping for A95K to be a bit cheaper. It was cheaper a couple weeks ago with the JB 15% off deal if you combined it with a soundbar. Really hoping somewhere else does it cheaper to price match to.

  • mmmmmmmmmmmm i wouldn't mind upsizing from my 75" sony….

  • Where are the model numbers for all of these TVs?

  • Catalog is out tomorrow hope they bring some good cashback on Mobile Port In Deals like $1200 on $99*24 Telstra plan etc..

  • +2

Cannot decide between Sony 75inch X90K or X95K. Such a huge price difference going up to mini led. And also the 77inch A80K which is oled!

    • in couple of years, X90K kind of non-mini led TVs will be phased out. becoming old technology gradually

      • Thanks, very good point. Now just weighing up between the latter two. Not sure what series 80 vs 95 will get me

        • +1

I've been weighing an upgrade from the x90e at the moment (HDMI 2.1 features) and looking at the price difference between the x90k and x95k I really don't think the mini LED is worth the cost difference. Sony also do this X Wide-angle layer thing on their x95 models that seems to floor the native contrast of the panel.

Apparently the local dimming on the x90k is not great but in my mind it would have to be as good or better than my x90e and Sony local dimming with the old backlit LED is pretty great (not OLED level or anything you will see blooming with subtitles etc).

The Rtings comparison is one I've been weighing up.

          https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/sony-x95k-vs-sony-x9…

          • +1

@Gregulah: Thanks for the link! We have a very wide viewing angle with huge windows to one side of the TV, so I think the X95K might do better in our space. I was looking at whether the oled A80K would be worth getting as the sale price brings it down to the same as the X95K. I haven't looked at what the difference between the series numbers mean yet, unless it's small upgrades like a premium model vs a more regular one.

            • @kaebomb: a80k has lower brightness versus the previous years a80j from what I saw in the reviews. If you like to watch during the day without curtains over that window the brightness of the TV (to overcome glare) that may be something to weigh up.

"The Sony A80K has alright HDR peak brightness, but like in SDR, it's a downgrade compared to the Sony A80J OLED. Some small highlights stand out versus the rest of the screen, but it doesn't get bright enough for a truly satisfying HDR experience."

  • What's the difference between full array led and OLED?

    • +5

Oled is self lit pixels, so black is actually black. Full array means that instead of having edge lighting to see and LCD, there's an array of LEDs behind the screen, which allows "local dimming" of areas of the screen that are meant to be black, however this local dimming happens in a much larger area than a single pixel, so while it's better than edge lit, it isn't anywhere near as good as an actual black pixel. I have even heard that different tvs with local dimming have the LEDs spaces apart at different intervals making some better than others.

Someone else jump in if I have any of this wrong, it's just what I gleaned from reading posts here

      • +1

        Correct.

FALD is actually pretty good despite what many will have you believe ("Totally unwatchable compared to OLED!"). Reality is if you're not sure what it is, it's probably a HUGE step up from what you're used to.

The 2 big potential drawbacks are that as Jackson mentions, how many "zones" FALD displays have can vary wildly, with some being as low as 15 (5x3 grid) and others with 400 across a 75" screen for example. Mini LED are "generally" more zones again, though there is some overlap. The other issue is that non-OLED screens often use very clever software controlled lighting to deliver their results, which generally work great, BUT all of this will get turned off in Game/PC mode in order to reduce latency. So if you're a gamer, there can be a significant disparity between picture quality for Movies vs Games.

  • So looking at the JB website, the Sony TV prices have already dropped to advertised sale price today rather than tomorrow?

Price also match Harvey Norman now.

Happened to be looking at TV for legit work purposes~

    • All the prices are subsidised by the suppliers so all the big box retailers will have price parity. It's just a matter of who advertises when, but the big three will always move in lockstep.

  • +4

I'm thinking about one of these, and I think it can be stacked with $100 AMEX offer (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/735444) and 10% cashback from Cashrewards by price matching at Sony…

e.g. Sony A80J 55" RRP $2,495, on sale at JB Hi-Fi (and HN) for $1,785
Request price match at sony.com.au (presumably will be approved), free delivery (for orders >$200)
Cashrewards 10% cashback at Sony, $178.50, new effective price $1,606.50
AMEX offer "Spend $500 or more, get $100 back", new effective price $1,506.50.

    $1506.50 seems like a pretty incredible price for a really well-reviewed OLED TV (even a 55" one)…

    • +1

I just did that, CR was $163 something without the tax component and combined it with AMEX.

$1500 for 2021 OLED with Google tv is pretty sweet IMO.

      • Ah, forget that they often don't include tax - that'd make it cashback of $162.27 I guess? Still pretty good - maybe good enough that I end up buying a TV despite not really needing one / planning to get one until I saw this deal :-/

        • Likewise, I was holding off on getting the 48" a90K via ebay store box damaged for about $2100 hopefully with an afterpay deal. But this is a really good price for a bedroom tv!

    • Great idea — how do you request a price match from Sony?

      • +1

There's a form on the product page to request one.

        • Thanks! I was considering going the 15% off gift cards route with Coles (assuming I can get them and it's still a major hassle) but this method is actually slightly cheaper.

        • +1

Just checked, Sony has matched the price ($1785) so don't even need to request :)

    • Sweet, I'm going to do this too (minus the Amex offer). Just lodged form, hopefully Sony gets back quick :)

    • +1

I thought cashrewards won't track pricematched items from Sony?

      • +2

They add the item to the cart with the price, no code of anything required. I have done this previously and received cashback.

They have updated the price to be cheaper than JB now. No need to price match :)

  • +1

when are they going to put the OLED 83" on sale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • They're like 6000AUD in the USA, so of course they're 9k$ here….

      • Is $6500 cheap for a Sony a90j 83" Bravia xr Master Series oled 4k 2021 …?

  • Thank you. Looking at getting one of the 55s

  • Any good bang for your buck 48 /50 inch tvs that will likely get 1000 or under please over the coming days that Is worth looking out for?
For a bedroom ,looking screen over gaming performance and have a spare google tv dongle,if the app store is crap on it to cover that base ,any help much appreciated 🙌

    • -2

Just get one of the Aldi TVs

  • Thinking to pull trigger or not? Now that Sony has discounted price for x90k with 10% CR cashback, only rush is gift card promo ends today. Wait for a90j or x95k deal ?

  • Deal live online now and possibly double dip with $500 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card Promo on selected models (ends tonight)

    • No double dip in my opinion

  • +1

Crap….Need to pull the trigger tonight for the $500 gift card from sony or JB.

    Tcl c835 or x90k for $300 more?

    • In the same boat, TGG are also offering it with $500 realca$h

      • difference would be CR cashback if going with TGG

    • +1

      SONY.

    • Ugh…No shipping to WA!

  • Is mini led really worth it to go for TCL? Thinking that Sony is probably the best brand and we wouldn't need to worry about support as well. Tough choice but I might pull the trigger

    • +1

With cash rewards I think the Sony is actually cheaper than TCL.

In terms of why I'm thinking TCL is because reviews of it make it sound like a solid choice for picture quality plus 3 years warranty.
