SIM for Two Weeks in Canada

For years, Canada has been notoriously bad for obtaining a cheap local SIM, but I haven’t been for a few years (pre-pandemic).

Roaming (via Optus) would cost $10 for calls + 1Gb data per day.

There are a few pre-purchase SIM cards that appear not too bad, but reliability is hard to judge - even though Simcorner has a good overall rating, there are still quite a few “never worked, lousy support” reviews. An eSim like Airalo seems to only provide data not calls which is too restrictive (need to call elderly relatives who don’t have WhatsApp or even a smartphone).

If anyone has recent personal experience of getting a suitable SIM at a reasonable cost, I’d love to here about it.

Get cheap data SIM and use Skype to call local number? Recent deals at Travelkon and SimsDirect.

  • I used SimsDirect back in July for my Canada trip and had no issues at all.

  • We are going to Canada for a week soon and then on to Mexico, I've decided to just wing it with wifi at the hotel/transport in Canada and get a sim in Mexico. The Canada ones are pricy and most seem to be "unlimited US DATA - Canada 2GB and throttled" or things like that. If there was a esim just for Canada for a week that was well priced I'd jump at it.

  • hey if you are interested, this site does short term esims, but very limited data:
