Wow the 50% off options are terrible

  • +2

Oakley is overrated really bad value. I did not think it was possible to charge more for glasses, but Oakley, you manaeged to increase the prices even more! In sports glasses, I highly recommend Alpina - great value and quality.

    • Yeah I remember the turbine were priced 275 RRP a few years ago then all of a sudden same model is 245 RRP. No upgrades or changes whatsoever just a mega price jack

      • +14

How is it a price jack if it is $30 cheaper?

    • My issue is that Oakley list some of their glasses as "low bridge"

I've had issues with every other brand until I got some of theirs. I can now go for a bike ride and not push up the glasses every 30 seconds.

      Other options most welcome

  • +6

Quality has gone way downhill since bought by Luxottica.

Had a pair of Holbrook XL snap at the hinge after a minor knock from my hand.

Oakley Australia were no help at all in backing their product, just told me to go back to the retailer in London.

Kmart $6 sunnies are way better quality.

    • +2

I've found shady rays are pretty good for the price, include a lifetime warranty.

When they break after a couple of years, they'll send you a new pair for free + you can always order a replacement pair for the cost of shipping ($20) at anytime.

      https://shadyrays.com/

      • Disagree here, had 2 pairs fault with the lens coating peal off after a day out on a boat. Returns policy was really frustrating. Couple of friends have said the same thing.

        • Oh that sucks, I just submitted a photo online and 1 pair was replaced.

The other pair (that had been dropped and had scratched lenses) I also did online and there was no photo needed but had to pay shipping.

    • +2

Isn't that normal for products purchased overseas with most companies?

    • Kmart are outstanding value, they even do polarised. I do like Carve too, bought a couple of pairs under $20 in the last anaconda sale. Great style and comfort.

    • The polarised safety glasses from Bunnings are really good - they look pretty cool and only cost $25-30.

  • I've seen some of these models at 50% for the last few months, keep getting ads

  • I am still keeping my old T-wire and Whisker Titanium polarized sunnies. The only issue is that Oakley doesn't want to sell replacement lenses anymore, so I buy off a 3rd party now.

  • -2

I got an Oakley with PRIZM len. It is supposed to look sharper in certain light conditions. It looks much less HD then my $10 Aliexpress polarised cheapie.

  • +4

    Thermonuclear Protection.

  • +4

3 pairs of Oakleys in the last 5 years - all with Prizm lenses, lenses all started peeling after 12 months and by 18months they were unusable.
Everytime I would try warranty, they would claim it's a scratch not the lens peeling.

    • I’m looking for an alternative too

    • +4

Don’t use alcohol wipes on them ever (if you do).

      • +3

Or washing up liquid..removes the reflective lense material instantly.

    • It's just some plastic protection layer. Just apply sticky tape on the inside and ripe it off. Do not do it on the outside.

    • +2

      Get replacement lenses from sunglassfix

I find them to be better optically than the Oakley lenses

    • don't leave any sunglasses, especially expensive ones, in the car. the heat harms the lens coatings as well as the frame (more so if they have a rubberised coating)

  • Anyone know if you can buy prescription Holbrooks, then take the lenses out and put in normal sunglass lenses?

    • The frame would be the same, but maybe. However lenses are easy to pop out on some models and pretty much impossible in others. For example I have a pair of turbine which is super easy to take the lens out, and a pair of split shot which I don’t think is even possible

    • yeah you just have to make sure the lenses you're popping in are for the exact same frame

  • +1

For the record, I buy Oakley prescription sunglasses and they're way better quality than everything else I've tried and I've been using prescription sunnies for a long time.

Can't comment on their stock lenses, though.

    • Do you know if the lenses are the same size as non prescrip?

    • been wearing a pair of Why 3.0 titanium frames in matte gold since 2008. replaced the nose pads and ear socks a few times. can't find a similarly specced frame from any brand now let alone one in the colour i want. wish this whole black frames trend would die already.

  • Can anyone recommend a good pair of running sunnies? Was looking at the cmdn cos don’t think I’m cool enough to pull off the bigger frame sporty ones

    • -2

      Alpina.

    • Goodr are what all the cool runners recommend but never tried them myself as I have a massive head and need to try things on to make sure they fit and the nearest shop is a bit of a drive. But everyone raves about them and they are 'only' $50

I have a pair of light weight plastic wrap arounds from the chemist or rebel or where ever it was I bought them; the key is that there needs to be a rubber nose grip and rubber grip on the arms somewhere. Just plastic and things start sliding around.

      • I’m 61cm in a hat and love my goodr shades. Some models are particularly wide. Check out wild fire sports.

      • I do some running and have recently bought a pair of Goodr to try out as well.. Can't say that I like them really.

It does move around a little as I start to sweat - but this is perhaps due to face shape anyway.

However, i wish there is a bit more curvature for a wrap-around the face. The Goodr are fairly flat and depending on where the sun is, there is the annoying reflection that I can see whilst running. Extremely annoying especially when this happens when i'm running down a straight road where I can't avoid the sun in that general direction.

    • What's specific about running sunnies, and how long do you run?
      Any here that would fit?

Apply OAKWEL10 promo code for an extra $10 off. Just worked for me.
    Thanks for sharing OP.

    • Should be pinned

    • Only works over a certain amount - I think $50. Didn't work for my $37 lens replacements

  • +1

I use Oakley frames for prescription glasses and they hold up well. Still use my pair daily from 3 years ago. Just got a pair with Oakley lenses and their lens coating is better than what BUPA optical or specsavers uses. I got a better price instore and can claim health fund rebates instore too.

The sale actually started a few days ago but had to be subscribed and they called it an early black friday sale that finished at midnight last night and then this started but seems to be exactly the same discounts. CR had 10.x% cashback on the first day as well but it is now only 5.6%.

    • You didn’t post the sale on ozbargain when it started? Shame on you 👎

      • +1

It's an ok deal, but not that good. Only 20% off for frames that have been 50% off in the past.

    • Shame!

  • I bought some Oaklies a few years ago, and the lenses got scuffed up pretty quick. Bought replacement lenses from here: https://www.thesunglassfix.com.au/ and they've been really good so far. I like the look of my Oaklies, and this was good to extend them for a bit longer.

  • No goggles are on 50% off. I really wouldn't touch Oakley for sunnies but they are king for the snow.

    • +1

There are a few but only selected colours/lenses. Line Mine L, Fall Line L, Flight Deck M, Flight Tracker S

  • -8

The promo code you offered for new users which I'm now trying to use WELNNL11 is not working, seems like false advertising.

  • +1

Was about to buy a pair then had second thoughts. Checked Knockarounds which has been my go to for 5 years and their Black Friday sale has also started early. Bought 6x pairs of polarised sunnies for the price of 1x Oakley instead!

    • The site says you have to subscribe with email and sms, phone number wasnt working as they arent an aus company, did you get it to work?

      • Don't need any of that. Simple 30% off all sunnies and free shipping from USA. They have always been perfectly fine. They opened an Australian website as well, but the prices are significantly raised there.

  • Are Maui Jim still good? Need a new pair of shades but want value for the high price.

    • Yeah they're still quite good

  • Can anyone recommend some photocromic sunglasses?

I cycle at dust and by the time it's around 8, the sun is so bright that I need something that can change with lighting conditions.

    • Oakley do a photochromic lens as an option but you may have to select it via custom

      https://www.oakley.com/en-au/category/sunglasses?show=Page&c…

    • I cycle as well, I bought a pair of interchangeable lenses, which I swap while riding, as long as you can ride with no hands for a moment.
Otherwise, buy 2 pairs, sun and low light and simply swap during your ride. I prefer this method and stopped using interchangeable lenses.

      • so do you bring two pairs on your rides?

I have sutro s sunnies and just read that you can change lenses. thinking of doing this as a more cost effective way.

        • +1

Changing lenses while on a ride is not convenient. Try removing your lense now and see how easy or difficult it is first. You'll probably eventually damage something by regularly changing lenses.

          • @8azinga: Agreed, it did take me 2-3 tries, but once you get a hang of it, it's really easy.
But yes swapping frames is my preffered method over swapping lenses on same frame.

        • Yeah, If I am riding late after noon, I carry both as I might be returning at low light.
But If I know I will be riding during 'sunny time' then I carry one.

  • -1

Just bought 3 pairs + 1 pair free with Shady Rays on the black Friday sale for $109.44 delivered.
All polarized, broken or lost warranty.

Had them for a year, very good quality.
Like any pair, do not let it dry with salt water or the salt dries inside the frame and the protective film of the glass bubbles up.

    • Are you gifting some of the sunnys or just gonna rotate them?

      • -1

I tend to run each pair to the ground then grab a new one. Based on my previous order, I got 6 months out of a pair.
But I didn't care for them as I should,, like it was never in a hard case, just let it float in the car or backpack. Eventually lenses were too scratched.
Otherwise, they'd last a long time.

I don't buy expensive pairs as:
        - If I lose them, I won't care
        - I don't have to keep worrying about carrying hard case, where I put them, leaving them alone on the table on a public space etc..
        - Quality of expensive and cheap pairs is minimal now, if not better with cheaper pairs.

        • +1

Makes sense. Yeah I don't buy pricey sunnys anymore either for pretty much same reasons you listed.

  • I wear Holbrook with the prizm lenses and have been for 10 years .
but theyre getting to be a bit of a joke $$$

Has anyone got a recommendation for another brand with a lense option as clear as Oakleys prizm?

  • +1

15% cashback at cashrewards at the moment.

    • Cashrewards currently doing 20% cashback for today.

How quickly does tracking take? Payed via Paypal checkout and wasn't sure if it tracked.

      • Damn, never seen it at 20% before. 15% was the highest I've seen so i bought last night.
        Takes 1-3 hours.

        • Just got my tracking email 😁. 20% is capped at $40 cashback.

        • Cashrewards had 20% off the Oakley store back in March this year. Just type in "Oakley Cashrewards" in the search bar and you'll have to scroll through may of the other past deals

          • @cynical17: Ah, i dont think that was during any oakley sales though as it was for cashrewards day.

            • @8azinga: True, it's hard to say what additional sales Oakley had at the time of the Cashrewards Day. Can't find anything else on Ozbargain.

  • Thanks op
Been waiting for a savitar sale.
Already have a pair but wanted another colour!

  • I had a laser OP about 6 years ago and they told me to buy something good for the initial period. Bought tge Flak 2.0 XL and it has been really good. About 2 months ago the lenses started to flake a bit so have to get something new but so far nothing is as comfy. Think i might just buy new lenses

    • +1

Yes just get replacement lenses. Some are 50% off
