(First time poster). Great value on 5G Home Internet Plans. Half price for 6 months. Alternative to nbn.

Need to check availability at your address before you get too excited. For my address it says isn't available even though looks covered in their network map. Anyone know a way around this, please DM me?

More Details:
$30/mth for up to 50 Mb/sec for existing customers, otherwise $32.50/mth
Add $2.50 for up to 100 Mb/sec

It is a requirement of the Plan that you must use the Vodafone provided 5G compatible modem (‘Modem’). The Modem remains Vodafone property and a non-return fee may apply if your Plan is cancelled within 36 months of connecting. There is no option to purchase the Modem outright or on a monthly payment plan.
The total maximum cost of not returning the Modem is $612. The non-return fee is $0 when you stay connected for 36 months (‘Device Period’) or $17 multiplied by the number of months remaining in your Device Period if you cancel prior. See ‘Early Exit Fees’ below for more detail.

There are no Early Exit Fees on this Plan.
However, if your Plan is cancelled before the end of the Device Period, you will need to return the Modem to us in Good Working Order within 30 days. If you do not return your Modem within 30 days or it is not returned in Good Working Order you will be charged a Modem non-return fee. The non-return fee is calculated as follows, $17 x months remaining of the Device Period, and will be applied to your next bill as one lump sum. For example, if you leave at month 20 you would pay $17 x 16 (number of remaining months), at a total of $272.
Good Working Order means the returned Modem is near new with only minor signs of wear and tear, and includes all original equipment.

  • For telstra i just signed up for it under my work address then took it home and used it lol

    • +1

I thought telstra 5g modems were geofenced …

      • Me too but it worked. I got rid of the 5g when they announced free fttp upgrade for my area.
I did read on some forums people were getting false positives and their modems wernt working… so maybe telstra took it off?

    • You are a genius. Does it work ok?

      • +1

Yeah it was awesome. But i got fttp now so got rid of it

        • Thanks for that. I will test the 5g at home on my iphone first. It would be nice to get 300mbps for $75 and then $85. Would be happy even with 200 tbh.

          • @fozzie: Just to clarify i did it with telstra. Dunno if vodafone will geolock

  • you will need to return the Modem to us

What they don't mention is that the only way to return the modem is to a vodafone store. Cancelling in generally painful process.

  • I’m with Optus home 5g, I’d assumed the same it’s linked to the nearest tower(s)?
If we get away this summer?, I’ll test it out

    • +8

I have been using it for last 2 years.

It is NOT Geofenced. My modem has travelled with me to all my holiday trips - works as long as there is an Optus tower. Haven't tried interstate yet. Worked all over NSW.

I power it in car via cig adaptor and use as mobile wifi. Once in holiday home, I use my Chromecast to TV. So everything works seamlessly just like at my home.

      • You deserve a medal! An amazing hack, thanks!

      • amazing, thanks

      • Hi, very late to this but does it fallback to 4G when there's no 5G available? If so, what are the speeds like? Thanks.

  • Can I buy now and activate later to start the service?

    • From memory billing starts once you switch the modem on.

      • yep, starts until your next bill, which will be a 1-7 days from sign up if you're a new customer.

if you're an existing customer with postpaid services its free until your next bill, i.e. if your billing cycle starts on the 15th and you sign up on the 16th, you get it free until the next month's 15th, then the 1 month free promotion

      • They lied to me when I signed up.

When I signed up they kept telling me billing starts as soon as the modem gets delivered.

  • For my address it says isn't available even though looks covered in their network map. Anyone know a way around this, please DM me

So I asked them why this is so, similar situation at my folks, it’s because they map the area where the network is only lightly used, so offering 5G home net won’t congest the network there.

You must live in a area where if 5G home net was offered it would affect mobile customers during peak usage.

    • Same situation here. What are you planning on doing?

    • After we moved house I had a mail forward set up from our old house. Upon applying for 4G home broadband from Optus, it said it was unavailable in my area. But I’d done testing with a $10 sim and old mobile and it was great. So I applied at the old house and it was approved, mailed to me via the forward. Changed my address after that and didn’t look back. Except when the privacy breach happened. Then I canceled the deal and signed up with Vodafone.

Pass. Wireless internet access, unless in major metro cities, is sooo unreliable imho. Why r they forcing a modem with limited to no security, prob 6 months firmware updates and a backdoor to your home network??? Even friggin Telstra is struggling in the pm rush hour in Sydney…

    • I'm on Telstra 5G and it's great. I've switched WiFi off on the modem, and connect to a separate router to provide WiFi, so security is less of an issue.

  • +2

We've used this service. It's choppy and disconnects very often. Back to nbn for us

  • +3

To get it for $60 mth, must have a Vodafone phone plan. Otherwise it's $65.

  • +2

im on it at work, at the central 5G network where vodafone is launched. Right opposite to westfield 5G towers.
    Its horrendous.

Have no choice since NBN is not available…

  • I wanted to ask whether 5g is better than NBN. Read the comments above, I guess I have already had my answer.

    • +2

Everyone's experience is different and based on their location.

Atleast mine, with Optus home 5G, is good.
I have a l tower closeby and routinely get 300 Mbps. During adverse weather, it drops to 100.

Compared to NBN the throughout is higher for a better cost (I pay $70), but the ping suffers. With NBN ping is usually in single digit. With this 5G wireless, it varies from 5ms to 30ms.

May be an issue for avid gamers. Not for a Joe like me.

    • +1

If the 5G tower near by then it would be good option…

I got Vodafone 5G unlimited speed plan(I think they are not offering this pan anymore)from last deal..
don’t have any issues of drop down or speed(usually get around 500-600mbps) (5G tower is just around 150-200m from my home)

    • +1

Yep, another happy 5G customer. The same as above, I get between 500 to 600 without any issues, and just then it hit 774. This is only with a 4 out of 5 bars signal. I'm yet to see 800 or higher. Ping usually between 11-15ms. Not a big concern. Speed is more important to me.

      • +1

Dang I feel like I'm missing out so much only get max 320 ish Mbps usually around 170 Mark for me

    • It's heavily depending on area and what you use it for. Really only way is to try it out and return it if it sucks.

      • Sounds like NBN to me. Some will be better suited if they stay with NBN some will be better off with 5G and some of those are lucky enough to have both options. I was with NBN before switching almost a year ago. Good speed when there was no outage. Was charged well, too, $70 for 100/40 but the promise of unlimited speed with 5G was too tempting.

    • +1

It depends on the location, I got 120 Mbps (Optus 5g 100 Mbps plan) every day and night in my area (eastern suburbs of Sydney). I had FTTP NBN at my apartment, it's good but the usual speed is somewhere between 80-93 Mbps and of course once or twice dropouts happen during a year's time. I moved to Optus 5g broadband cheapest option but it is still way better than my FTTP NBN so far. Hope my comments help.

  • On Optus 5G I get
    40ms to WoW Australian servers.
210ms to Lost Ark US servers.

  • even assuming availability is based on where you live in relation to the closest tower it makes no sense to me as some addresses on my street say it's available & others don't but they are differing distances to the tower

  • Can existing user use this deal?

    • no, I tried via online chat, the best they can offer is half-price for 3-month. But, you can cancel and re-sign up that will qualify

  • -3

But yeah wouldn't touch this being Voda

    • +1

Depends on your location though because Voda is better than Telstra where I live.

  • Just keep in mind these 5G modems may not work with wireless security cameras. I haven't test it but a lot of people are complaining.

    • I have Reolink wireless, it's working. Don't forget many of those cameras are low-end with sub-par WiFi capability against the latest WiFi 6 modem router. I have a $10 dongle that would not recognise it but the $20 would. Solved the problem by connecting my previous WiFi router

    • +3

The issue is not specific to 5G modems or security cameras.
But any security camera that requires direct access via a public IP connected to a mobile broadband modem (including 5G) may not work by default. Because mobile broadband connections do not get a public IP. Instead, your modem will get a local IP from your carrier and a shared public IP through a CGNAT. Which means you cannot directly connect to your security cameras/NVR via a public IP from outside unless you use a VPN. However, any system that uses a cloud service for remote access (most modern popular security systems do) will work.

P.S: AFAIK business customers can request a public IP with most operators, but its not available for retail customers.

I signed up to this last week 10/11/22 before this offer. Modem has locked up a few times, Spoke to Voda who advised to remove sim card or take into the store. Speeds in my area are ok, ranges from 100 to 190 mb/s, international speeds are typical TPG, Rang them this morning who were happy to match offer for existing customers. https://www.speedtest.net/result/13943732451.png

  • -1

Great price but bonded with Vodafone for another 30 months with $60/mo charges?
    I'd rather buy a 5g modem myself.

    • +2

Wrong. No early exit fees, but return the modem. I'd leave after 6 months.

      • +1

Or ask Vodafone to keep deal but with a minor discount. Afterall NBN 50 average price is also around $60 a month anyway. (PLUS DONT FORGET YOU GET FREE MODEM after 3 years)

        • I signed up eventually… But how do you ask them to keep deal?

      • +1

Hard credit check every 6 months… Be careful.

        • What does that mean?

  • Guys, what type of IP address does it has?

  • Man this is killer deal, But I am still on their unlimited speed plan from last year of $42.5 a month. Been pretty decent.

Now thinking either churn the current plan and signup on a new 100Mbps plan for $35 for 6 months, Or STAY On current one with increased price of $69.99 a month for same unlimited speed plan for 12 months ?? AND OFCOURSE keep the NOKIA FASTMILE MODEM FOR FREE after 2 more years ??
what do people suggest Churn or keep current plan?

    • Man this is killer deal, But I am still on their unlimited speed plan

so is it terrible as lots of people are saying?

      • so is it terrible as lots of people are saying?

        terrible as in what ?
the modem ? the connection? speeds? ping? or what ?

From my experience only bad thing is pings are high like around 40 ms otherwise everything is good for me. But that's just me, others probably had a different location hence different experience.

One of the speed test just run

Those signing up fresh DONT FORGET $$ from SB's cashback. and also 1st month is free.

So you max 6 months cost should be $32.5*5-30= $132.5 for 50 Mbps given you return the modem

and $180 for 100 Mbps plan

  • Anyone knows what’s the difference between Vodafone’s nbn 5G vs. the 5G in this post?

  • Hmm.. it's a good price, but I still wouldn't recommend it. Currently at the tail end of the half-price offer from last year.
I'm posting this from my phone currently as the 5G connection is down….again.
Will be returning the modem and cancelling at the end of the month.

  • Called up to cancel but they said to call back tomorrow because their system is 'down'

  • +1

Here is my 5G result, about 700 metres from the Tower. The modem is placed near a window but with a metal roof, Down 871 Up 99, the best result I have ever got so far. The Ping looks high at 23ms but if I use the Ookla app instead it comes to half of that at 12ms. https://www.speedtest.net/result/13955870196

  • I signed up earlier this month for $10 off for 6 months, then saw the black Friday deal and tried via online chat for nearly one hour, the best they can offer is half-price for 3-month. But, they also said you can cancel and re-sign up that will qualify…what a waste of time and resources.
ps, not sure how far from the tower, we get about 150-170mbps during the day.

    • Can't afford to disconnect from Internet for even one working day, otherwise cancel and rejoin sounds a good idea.

      • Just use mobile hotspot for 2-3 days should be fine but their customer support mentions it will take 4-5 days for the modem to reach the warehouse to confirm the cancellation etc. I couldn't be bothered, just agreed with 3 month half-price and $10 off for 6 months after that.

I discovered that you can buy this from a Vodafone shop even if the website says “unavailable at your address”. For something that is unavailable at my address and limited to 100 Mbps, I was pleasantly surprised to be getting 180 Mbps download speeds (near 20 Mbsp upload).

  • Ever since I posted the speedtest, my Internet speed is now halved. They put a cap coz they think I'm speeding too fast, should have kept quiet.
