Giveawayoftheday has been around for many, many years. The daily giveaway has to be activated within 24 hours. I've never had an issue although I always scan the downloaded archive file before installation.

Giveawayoftheday have given out software in the past that was spyware/adware. I stopped using them then (Years ago) so not sure if they have improved.

          • @thecloudking: I believe long ago i did download a program from them once and got a spyware or something along those lines.

Handbrake for Mac folks. Free and Open Source.

    • Handbrake never did what I want well enough. This software, in combination with MKVToolNix does everything I want.

      • +4

I would not, personally, install this, never heard of the company, site looks dodgy, better be safe. Handbrake is quite capable for most.

      • +9

What can this do that Handbrake can't?

        • Videoproc can do hardware encoding for M1 Mac which is faster than handbrake.

          • @lmfans: Handbrake does use hardware encoding via the Video Toolbox framework.

      • What did you want to do? Curious.

If there is something that needs a bit more fine tuning, I turn to Staxrip76

        • It's been some time so I don't recall what the issues were. Having another look at it now though it just seems way too complicated for what I do.

I use VideoProc almost exclusively to convert to x265, usually stripping out unwanted subtitles at the same time. I recently discovered I needed Apple ProRes conversion for an issue I was having with certain videos on Topaz Video Enhance AI. On Windows this isn't a simple thing but in VideoProc I just selected it from a list of presets and it worked perfectly.

The only other thing I use is MKVToolNix-gui for adding/removing subtitles, audio streams, etc.

          My process is …
MKVToolNix -> deselect everything except wanted audio stream, subtitles and chapters and export .mka file (to preserve audio quality)
TVEAI -> denoise/upscale (if required). This results in an x264 file that can be 20GB+
VideoProc -> convert the resulting file to x265.
MKVToolNix -> drag the stripped audio back in to the x265 file.

This gives me a ~3-5GB x265, grain-free file with the original audio/subtitles which I then drop into my Plex server. The difference on things like Shaka Zulu (required ProRes) and Band of Brothers is enormous.

Also Subler for non-transcoding conversions, like MKV to M4V or MP4, plus subtitles management.

  • Excellent, I was looking for a good software to download and convert online content, thanks op!

  • The software look nice and feels fine, I am by no mean any expert on this matter, but I guess this is better than handbreak if you are not tech savvy enough also tired of using formatfactory

    Handbrake is free and legit

    • Can you clarify what is not legit about this?

    • I used the free version last year around Xmas and upgraded to a paid lifetime license. I did not find anything doggy. The benefit of this software is that is supports hardware encoding.

Any recommendations for an external bluray player that can do playback of all discs including 4k uhds? I do not want to get an internal unit as I want to use it with both Windows and Mac.

    Cheers

    • Update: Tried it out (windows version) and really like the ability to download and edit videos from urls including youtube!

    • Get an internal player and a USB case for it.

      • Any recommendations for a unit? I’ve seen a owc model, but wasn’t keen as I had really horrible experience with owc usb-c doc on mac (stupid thing bricked the mac twice in a week)

Interested to know if there is a big difference between external unit vs internal+case for performance as cost wise latter is almost double. ✌️
