  • Is safe to keep in a car for long journeys ?

    • +5

When I’ve had plastic ones they’ve leaked fumes (apparently a feature) and sniffing fumes is not good.

I’ve switched to metal and won’t go back.

      • Thanks 🙏 which one do you recommend? I think 10l would be a stretch but 5l is ok for car I suppose

        • +1

These are plastic. I went for a 20l metal one, I think from supercheap. I’ve now got three.
More expensive but will (likely) last forever.

Depends on your use case what would be best for you.

        • For car I'd say get a 10L

      • Yep they vent as a safety feature. Metal ones should have the same. Petrol expands quite a bit as it heats up, and cars in summer can easily get to 40c, increasing the pressure in the Jerry can significantly. If they don't vent it eventually causes the Jerry can to split and leak. Bad idea to have a full one in the car long term. Still, I'd risk it if I had to. You just underfil the Jerry can by say 25% and maybe open the cap every so often to equalize the pressure.

        • "If they don't vent it eventually causes the Jerry can to split and leak": need to add "if you bought a Chinese Metal Can". Totally misleading generalisation. "You just underfil (sic) the Jerry can by say 25%": Absolutely, totally and utterly wrong. The liquid does not expand, the air/gas mixture does. Less fuel in the Can = more expansion/pressure. Not a clever idea.

      • Definitely was smelling petrol last night from this. Bought it for the same price 2 weeks ago with the auto card discount.

    • Unless you are not expecting to come across service stations along the way, no reason to take extra fuel?

Might be useful for people with electric vehicles on long distances, to power the generator:)

      • I use mine to fill up when cheap and try to save money. They’ve paid for themselves.

        • +1

me too, but doubt taking extra fuel on long distance trips a good idea.

      • Just as a safety that's it. Will be traveling from Melbourne to Brisbane Soon

        • By highway? I'm sure there's ample fuel stops.on the way. Good excuse to stretch legs and take a break and refresh.
Doesn't sound like it's exactly 'outback', even then, I carried 40l diesel on my north west WA trip and bought home the same fuel I left with. Drop a couple dollars into the small places that are still survive and support local businesses and keep them going for the future.
A few cents a litre more per litre, is nothing really when you think about it.gwez, we paid just shy of $3 a litre recently….but, we wanted to go there.
Saving a couple dollars for the time, effort and inconvenience of carrying fuel, to save a couple cents a litre….
Enjoy your trip, don't sweat about it

My mate recently carried 4 jerry cans across the Nullarbor to save money on buying on the road houses….I couldn't think of anything worse. We still stopped at the same places for a coffee and toilet and stretch and while I pumped fuel and paid, he messes around with jerry cans and dirty hands and carrying all that weight and yeah, I'm all for saving money, but buying the jerry cans and the messing around….

          • @Spending2Much: Absolutely agree with supporting small business. I havent done the trip before so but more from in case perspective maybe we won't need it.

    I have 20L, 10L and 5L.

Been waiting for the 10L to be on special as the 20L is a heavy lift to fill with.

They seem to do deals on the 5L regularly but not the rest of the range. I bought 5L at $8.00 earlier this year.

The Scepter comes with a good pouring spout.

I fuel up at Costco and fill another 40L for the wife's car. She has not been to a servo in a long time.

    • imaging 20L metal jerry… struggle to lift and keep in position filling up my car.

      • That is an issue.

20litre squat is my favourite shape, less likely to be knocked over
    .

If you lay off them Nugs, you might be able to do it too!

  • I had no idea these were made in Canada. I've had one for yonks now. Use it for the lawnmower petrol.

  • Really don't like these. Sure, made in Canada sounds good, but there are quite a few made in Australia that are better. These are lightweight, thinner material and take ages to empty. The squat style is awkward and doesn't fit any jerry can holders.
