  • how does this get 9 up votes with no deals presented.

Elon Musk ideology has taken over OzBargain. You can buy $8/vote now.

It's a bad post, but the deals are good.

For example, the 105 disc model is $2299 which compares pretty well with the Giant TCR Advanced Disc 2 Pro Compact at $3600 or the Specialized Tarmac SL6 Disc Sport at $3800 or Cannondale Supersix Evo 105 at $4,000 (to look at bigger brand offerings).

Hey mate, I'll add the deals in for you :)

    • +8

      It's ultegra?

      • Yes, there is an Ultegra model

    • The 105 ones are like $1600-2200

  • +3

Gee that's not bad in a post-covid world, I'd probably get the 105 alloy with rim brakes if I was getting a first bike. Although you'd probably want it checked over by a shop or knowledgeable friend if you were totally new to bikes.

  • +2

    A shame there's no DI2 version

  • That is great value. Especially the Ultegra one for $2800. Groupset itself would cost around $1200? I think like someone mentioned here, the weight seems heaver for an Ultgera build. I think mostly because of the cheap alloy wheels (most probably 2kg+) they come with. You could save around 700-800g if you go with a decent lightweight allow/carbon. You can get it down to Sub 8kg if you spend about $1k.

  • I'm thinking of buying a first bike for fun and exercise, not commuting. Can these do crushed gravel trails? Budget was around $5-600 but apparently you can't find shit for that price so maybe $900. Thinking of just sticking to the stationary bike.

Are any of these good options and how do they compare to a used Cannondale Synapse for $900-1000? I saw the word Ultegra on it but don't know anything about parts.

    • There's a big difference between ultegra from 10 years ago and now, so it depends. These bikes wouldn't be good for crushed gravel, you'll need wider tyres. Under $1000 to do loose gravel is tough, you'll have to go for used and look for 35mm tyre clearance or more

      • What about a Giant Fastroad SL1 2022 for $1.2k? Destroys the budget but seems to have good stuff, 35mm clearance. Only downside is the flat handlebars when I know I want hoods.

I heard bike prices are high right now due to covid issues, would it be better to wait and see if I'm not even sure how much I'll like cycling?

        • +1

Yeah that's decent, but keep in mind if you're quite keen on hoods, doing a conversion is generally not worth it, since the expensive part of the groupset is the hydro shifters. But 1.2k is quite good for those specs? Perhaps you wouldn't lose that much if down the track you get into it more and decide you want drop bars. The only bad thing about the fastroad is that it's not full hydro brakes.

If you're really keen on gravel then maybe better to just get a decent used hardtail (I don't know that much about MTBs though). If you just want to give cycling on bike paths/roads a go, just get a cheap road bike. If you really get into it you can sell it and get a gravel bike that can be okay on both roads and gravel.

    • If you're looking at getting a good Gravel bike, the Marin Gestalt bikes will be going on sale tomorrow.
Those are streamlined and lightweight enough for road with more strength and flexibility for gravel trails.
These are great for commuting as you can jump cubs etc.

  • Good for ebike conversion?
I can see its got the 68mm bottom bracket = perfect for bafang mid drive unit

    • Honestly, not sure. But you could probably do some mods or conversions. The bike components and placements are pretty standard.
