    • I was thinking the same thing
Also, what % cut does ShopBack gets from those sale. Who knows..

    • +1

Good question. ShopBack rep needs to address this.

    • Have checked the two accounts my household has and can confirm that of the $400 we spent that the $90 cashback was cleared and available on the accounts. I have used up the credit immediately prior to any possible reversal and suggest everyone else do the same.

  • +2

Wow I purchased $60 Deliveroo gift cards as Shopback was promoting 20% cashback. Haven't used any of the gift cards yet. And now they've gone into administration less than a week later. Feels like a scam.

  • +4

    FML, bought $400 in total…

  • What are my options here then can I raise a chargeback? Or go to fair trading ?

  • +1

can we do chargeback if paid with coles prepaid mastercard ?

  • +14

That's $400 my family will never see again! Cannot believe how shifty this has been handled. They would have known quite well what was happening in advance of this deal and have screwed the customers knowing full well customers investing in gift cards would be the last to see any money credited when they fell into administration. The UK headquarters that turned over 1.8 billion pounds last year should be held accountable for the Australian operation but I'm sure everything is drafted by crafty lawyers so there is no liability. Sadly accountability and conscience are missing from modern business practice.

    • +1

It's highly unlikely that the teams (partnerships, marketing etc) who negotiated this deal with the team at Shopback would have had any idea this was coming. They likely found out this afternoon along with all of us. They would also no longer have a job.

      • +3

I doubt Shopback knew but it is extremely unlikely that there was not a person at Deliveroo in a position to authorise or initiate this deal that did not know that this was looming or inevitable.

    • +2

Post this on Reddit, maybe social media can blow this up and encourage the parent to pay up

  • +10

Damn. I feel sorry for anyone caught up in this mess. What a scum move by Deliveroo and questions need to be ask to Shopback.

It would be hard to trust either going forward. Especially how poorly Shopback handled the data hack. I would stay clear of them.

  • +8

    From this ASIC page: https://asic.gov.au/for-consumers/dealing-with-insolvent-com…

    Make a chargeback claim
If you have a gift card from an insolvent company or paid them a deposit using a credit card, you may have chargeback rights. This means you may be able to get your money back from your credit card issuer. Contact the credit card issuer straight away as there are conditions and time limits on making a chargeback claim.

    • Thanks, will do tonight and update here

    • +4

This situation is annoyingly convoluted because the article you have claimed above, the gift card supplier and the merchant to redeem the cards is presumably the same company.

We have a company in the middle in this situation.

      • +3

Well, lessson learnt, never buying giftcards from Shopback again

      • +1

A lot of gift cards are bought through a third party (e.g. at Coles or Woolworths), so hopefully the ASIC advice holds. A chargeback seems like the best available option, so I've got my fingers crossed for people that it works.

        • +1

I've never experienced a push to shove situation regarding gift cards. I am not sure if maybe Coles and Woolworths might do refunds out of "goodwill" because they have the capital behind them.

A cashback website based out of Singapore, not so sure.

Once again, hopefully it does work out, heck i'm still going to lodge one regardless

There was a company that went through a similar situation not that long ago, does anyone recall which company it was? might be worth checking out if coles/woolies footed the bill or if everyone got stiffed

          Example: Dick Smith
          https://www.afr.com/companies/retail/coles-to-exchange-dick-…
coles/woolworths exchanged them for coles/woolworths gift cards. This isn't a situation where a chargeback was initiated, it was companies that had "more" on the line to lose, providing a security service. There are some reports that there was an "agreement' between the companies so potentially coles/woolworths takes a 20% cut and dick smith cops 80%, I don't know.

Point is that it's very messy and presumably both the supermarkets would have more clout and potentially legal teams to be able to pursue things further.

          • +2

@peter05: I believe with a chargeback it's not up to the merchant to decide if the chargeback is approved - it's agreed between the buyer's bank and the merchant's bank, with the credit card scheme (e.g. VISA) acting as the arbiter if they disagree.

            • +1

@ragrum: Agreed, this is where the treatment of gift cards "like cash" can come to bite you back in the ass and gets very murky

  • +9

    dick Smith move

  • +3

ShopBack has already created a separate ticket category in online support. Let’s see what they can do!

    • +1

What's the separate ticket category you're referring to? Are you asking them if they can refund the Deliveroo gift card purchases?

      • Yeah its the first option when you get support via the app

        • What option are you getting? I'm only getting missing cashback and help centre

    • +2

thanks. Raised a ticket already, will see what they can do about it. If no satisfaction, time to start the chargeback process. $2k in useless giftcards is definitely worth fighting for….

      • +1

Ouch, I was 1k but either way will be fighting this one. Hopefully ShopBack can leverage its relationship with Deliveroo or the voucher company for an outcome. Otherwise charge back

        • +1

Hopefully it’ll be similar to when coles/woollies were selling discounted dick smith gift cards days before they went under, I think they ended up refunding the purchasers but that was a big company who could afford to do so. Not sure if shopback will have the same largesse,

  • +6

Even though they rug-pulled their Australian customers Deliveroo still have a big social media presence for their home operation and other foreign operations, so they're presenting a nice target. May be they are about to see how well Aussies can shitpost.

  • +5

Disgusting, scammed me off $200. Ozbargain mods should ban shopback posts til this gets resolved.

    • +7

Not really ShopBack's fault they probably didn't know either.

      • +6

It is their responsibility to do proper due diligence on products they sell or have a contingency plan for such situations. I'll reserve further judgement and give them some time, but they shouldn't be allowed to roam free without consequence whilst this is pending.

    • +2

I've never used shopback since that debacle years ago. Benefit of the doubt they really don't know.

  • +1

If you go to in app virtual assistant to raise an issue, you can select Deliveroo Gift Card as a separate category as opposed to Account/Withdrawal/Gift Cards. Seems to be a temporary response to me.

  • +4

    These comments are 💥💥💥💥

My condolences to whoever has been caught up in this shit storm. What a balls up

  • +3

I hope @gotyourback has got our backs on this.

Take a screenshot of your gift card balance in the Deliveroo app. Before it goes.

Let's get all our ducks in a row.

  • +1

I made a ticket with shopback's virtual bot here.
Will decide what to do after they reply or a week.

  • I should have ordered like 100 meals for lunch today with my credits!

  • +1

Submitted a Chargeback through commbank as well as shopbacks automated response which doesn't help other than the "We'll get back to you"…

    • So here's my concern about lodging a CC chargeback against Shopback as the intermediary - I'm out $300 with the useless Deliveroo GCs but I've got a sizable amount more of pending cashback with Shopback.

Are chargebacks against Shopback going to lead to account bans or forfeiting other pending transactions?

They did after all supply us with gift cards….
I actually bought $400 worth and just fortunately put through a big order this week leaving me with about $308. So they were valid for a time….

      • +1

This is my only reluctance in attempting a chargeback. If ShopBack so chooses, they could argue my approved cashbacks are no longer eligible as the transactions were disputed, even if the dispute never gets resolved in my favour. So I could lose all the gift cards (current situation) as well as already credited cashback (if ShopBack plays hardball and disses their loyal customers)

        • +1

Always redeem cashback as soon as you can, and always use gift cards as soon as you can as well. That's been my philosophy

  • +3

Makes me wonder if restaurants got rugged as well..

  • +1

Even though I did not buy any, this pisses me off. You all should report to ASIC and ACCC and let them know about this. Directors of the company could be held responsible if they borrowed knowing they were closing the shop. At the very least parent company should make consumers whole. Even virgin didn't cease the flight credit people had, though slightly diff circumstances as it would be fulfilled by new owners of the business.

I worked in restructuring before and payment to the unsecured creditors is anywhere from 0c to $1 but in my experience rarely above 20-30c. Doubt they have much or any hard assets to sell and can't sell IP as its UK company. Given that this deal was posted like 5 days ago, the Deliveroo AUS board and Mgmt def knew what was happening and what they were doing. Given Korda Mentha's reputation in the market (referred to as vultures who made >$50m from feeding on Ansett), I will not be surprised if they came up with the idea. Their fees (charged hourly) are paid even above secured debt and their team culture is to log as many hours as possible to eat away the money pool for creditors so often unsecured creditors are left with very little.

I hope they didn't have much senior debt and will make you guys whole. Goodluck!

    • +1

If the AU company paid the UK parent company the right to use the brand name "Deliveroo", technically UK company can charge any amount they want and it can be nothing much left. Even it should be in arm-length, the valuation is quite subjective

      • +1

Yeah not sure, could be a royalty I guess. I think main reason they are closing is the gig employee classification law. I have a feeling they will make people whole on deliveroo credit but timeline on DOCA can be very long and many who bough gift cards will forget or not file a claim. Ideally it would be ShopBack who will do the grunt work and pay people back when the get money from deliveroo but maybe that’s me being wishful. Absolutely disgusted by Deliveroo. Mgmt would have known it for weeks

  • Submitted a dispute through Westpac and I’ve to wait 10 business days for an outcome or if they need more information

  • Submitted a chargeback on CommBank App chat bot

    • -1

Do you think it is better that way rather than waiting a reply from shopback first?

      • +4

I will withdraw the dispute if it’s resolved by ShopBack first.

  • +1

Same trick as Dick Smith again. Should never buy gift card again.

    • +1

I always redeem gift cards basically as soon as I buy them. Never wait

  • Hopefully Shopback get our back as we purchased from them not Deliveroos.

    • +1

Oh no no. Shopback already said they are not responsible.

      • +1

        Where did you see that?

  • +3

Damn less than a week ago wasted $200 on this useless company 🤬

  • +40

Hey all, this news has definitely caught us by surprise too, we have teams looking at it and I’ll do my best to keep you updated.

    • +4

Hopefully Shopback hasn't paid out to Deliveroos.

      • +1

Really hoping this is the case too.

      • +1

I think this is the hope that everyone is having. So much harder(impossible?) to recover if the money has already been transferred over to deliveroo which is pretty much a black hole now.

      • +4

$25 cashback just got approved too today…
If deliveroo deliberately wait until get paid by shopback before pull the trigger, that's really a scum move

      • To be honest it was just deliveroo's exit liquidity. I bet the terms and conditions of the gift card exonerate them from any liability

    • +4

Good on you to not stay silent

    • Thanks for responding to the message some communication is better then none. That said I hope you take a longer term view on this, lost customers plus reputation damage if this does get into the media cycle (which I assume it will)

    • +1

Yes, please get back to us with good news.

    • Following, hope it applies to other recent deliveroo gift card purchases and not just this deal

      • following

      • +3

Yea I didn’t buy the gift cards in this promo, got it in last month 20% off deal and still haven’t used them. Hope ShopBack will refund us as well

    • +5

Hey there OzB, just here to offer a small update for you all:

Yesterday, and much like the rest of you, we were surprised to learn that Deliveroo had gone into voluntary administration. ShopBack was not aware of Deliveroo's intention to exit Australia and we are equally frustrated by the lack of communication.

That said, we are committed to finding a resolution for our customers, and have teams working round-the-clock to determine the best course of action. In the meantime, we thank you for your patience.

I will ask for your kind patience with me as well as our customer support team as we continue to work tirelessly to help address your concerns/needs here. I will keep you posted as soon as we have more information.

      • +2

Appreciate the open communication, and look forward to your solution… someone mentioned in a thread swapping them for doordash vouchers… might be a good solution and doordash may be interested in securing new customers.

      • FYI: New update here

  • +2

    $200 RIP
    Scum business

    • Same, bought $200 GC in Oct from SB, not even used a dollar
Still got $30 in Deliveroo account that 100% has no way to claim

  • Didn't buy any this time around but still had more than $200 in credit from the last sale..

Hope there is a fair resolution, horrible situation - Thanks @gotyourback

  • +4

Got wrecked recently with LUNA, Celsius, Zipmex, BlockFi and Digital Surge. Wasn’t expecting to add Deliveroo to that list.

    • +1

WTF, didn’t know that digital surge also got sucked into the mess

      • Today’s news - they just sent an email out earlier

        • +7

Please let us know what you invest into next..

  • +7

WTF, all the savings of my bargains up in smoke. Just participated in the recent sale too.
And I didn't order with my Deliveroo credit for the last order because I used the citibank deal.
Partner and I loose a total of $600.
Feel stupid for trusting too much in 1 company.
Lured in with the "Free deliveroo plus with mastercard" then discounted gift cards. Should've known something was wrong.

  • +5

Bought $300 worth. This hurts. The worst thing is I usually dun buy this much gift cards in advance but cuz I missed out on last deal previously I went overboard this time. Really regret my decision

  • +2

Delete your payment details before hackers steal it. Deliveroo would not bother.

    • +1

Did that immediately, not sure if they could, but Deliveroo doesn't care.

    • It won’t let me delete my credit card details as it says it is linked with Deliveroo plus subscription. And there is no option to manage / deactivate the subscription

      • Got the same issue with one, but that's my revolut card and I don't keep money in revolut because that even allow payments to be deducted from your account after card is frozen/blocked and cancelled.
Really no option to cancel your subscription and then delete?

For me when I try to delete it does show manage subscription then I can go to process to cancel it.

      • try through the app deactivating your Plus membership first, then delete card. I couldn't get it to work at first either, but this is a workaround

  • Sorry guys to hear what has happened to many of you. I retract my statement about Deliveroo. I guess they are just a bunch of thieves.

    • LOL

  • 😭$200 gone

    • +5

How is it greed.. it’s a cash back promotion, nothing to do with greed.

    • +6

Not sure it's fair to call people greedy for buying giftcards valued at more than $100…

I mean if someone bought $10k then yeah that's clearly overboard… But more than $100 is hardly greedy when you look at the cost of a takeaway delivered for a family

  • Refund please!

  • Impromptu got $200 gift cards in the last promo as you were meant to get a $30 GC for free if you spent $200. Never saw the $30 GC appear and now in the red $200.

    • What a scam

  • +1

    Christmas comes early

    • +1

      For deliveroo?

  • +1

Feel bad for all the people caught in this scam. Hope the parent company pays up what is owed!
