On sale is the previously popular Xiaomi Pad 5 in the colours Black, Green and White. This tablet offers good performance for gaming and has a nice display that I think looks better than the OLED panels in the Lenovo tablets. It seems the bootloader in this tablet may be unlocked. If so you'll need to lock it for Netflix HD to work.

Featuring Widevine L1 DRM for FHD Netflix/Amazon Prime, an impressive 11" 2560x1600 120Hz IPS display with 600nit brightness, HDR, Dolby Vision and DCI-P3 support. It features MIUI 12.5 for Tablets (MIUI 13 / Android 12 via OTA) with Google Play, 6GB RAM, 128GB (or 256GB) UFS 3.1 storage and packs the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 860 CPU with an Adreno 640 GPU.

Other features include 4 speakers with Dolby Atmos, 8720mAh battery with 22.5W USB-C PD charging, 13MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, Wifi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. Check out reviews from Techtablets, GSMArena and [xiaomify](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KfBqf5v0hs

  • The 5 on the picture looks more like a 6.. lol

makes ppl quiickly buy thinking its 6
      dodgy!!

      • +7

There is no 6 and they haven't labelled it as 6 either. Nothing dodgy.

    • +2

      A little bit yes.

Any deals on the xiaomi pen coming up? :)

    • Yes please. Superb tablet this Pad 5. 👍

  • iOS phone and windows pc user here. After an android tablet so would like to know more about what this means please:

It seems the bootloader in this tablet may be unlocked. If so you'll need to lock it for Netflix HD to work.

    • OP needs to provide a source for that claim.

      • Source: AliExpress listing description says unlocked bootloader.

        • So is this the Pad 5, or Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 with a Global ROM?

          • @jasswolf: No such thing as a Mi Pad 5. Read the listing description and you won't need to ask so many questions.

            • @Clear: That's what the Chinese model is known as.

              • @jasswolf: Xiaomi Pad 5. They dropped the Mi from this and many others.

i just bought the lenovo p11 pro global version (730g) for $374, but i think it's worth the extra 60 bucks for the mi pad 5… simply because of the display. no OLED but also no pentile bs.

how long do they update their OS for patches etc for?

    • FWIW, my household has been a happy Xiaomi mobile phone user for the last 5 years, already on our 3rd batch phones, and soon replacing for our 4th (the 1st 3 bc we dropped them far too many times, with baby on board and all, the current one bc it was made obsolete by upgrade expiration and what seems to be planned slowdown obsolescence).

  • This or ipad 9th gen?
Use case: reading apps and notion note taking

    • This, but I think you'll need their branded stylus.

Xiaomi has a weaker CPU & GPU, but otherwise a better experience. Both are dated hardware at this point though, not that I would recommend the 2022 iPad, merely an updated Xiaomi Pad that supports Bluetooth LE Audio.

Better cameras (or implementation) would be nice too. I assume this will get an updated version in 2023 that also comes with AV1 decode, hopefully encode too.

In terms of the next tier if performance, 2024 is when the tablet and ARM computing competition will really kick off.

The SD860 is quite a snappy chipset, can handle most games/tasks I throw at it just fine. I'm happy to answer any enquiries on performance if anyone has any questions.

What do I have to do to lock the bootloader? Is it simple to do?

    • +1

you may not need it: you can use Magisk and Magisk Hide module (not sure how it is called nowadays) to hide root/unlocked bootloader from Netflix App.
(although I didn't try it myself, just using it for hiding root from Android Pay app)

  • Redmi has expandable storage

    • Any other pros?

      • I don't know. the lack of sd card support put me off this tablet sadly. went with a sammy instead

  • Is this overkill for just reading?

    • Not a fan of ebook readers.
