I didn’t think I’d like it, especially coming from a mechanical keyboard (keychron k2 browns) but.. I don’t mind it. The Touch ID in the keyboard makes life a lot easier when I step away and the function keys are actually useful.

I thought it would be exactly the same as the MacBook keyboard but it feels more tacky and responsive. Though admittedly not by much. Makes travelling to work with it much easier and colleagues appreciate the sound haha.

I tried this one for a couple of weeks after using a mechanical keyboard also but I really just couldn't get used to it.
I'm not sure what it was for me, perhaps the key travel, but it was just so awkward to type on.
Guess it all depends on what you're used it.

I really tried to live with mechanical one. Went back to this after few months and this feels like wearing comfort sneakers compared to new dress shoes that don't fit.

With this my hands don't move vertically, just fingers. With mech I was doing a lot of accidental typos just hitting keys sideways.

    • I've owned the non-Touch ID with Numeric for a few years now and absolutely love it. A mechanical keyboard is great for the old copywriter hacks in the basement ;)

I have an old original iMac G3 keyboard still that I need to fix the space bar but it is fun and fabulous when fully working…

I feel it might be time to get the Touch ID one so I can be more lazy, not reach a further 300mm to my MacBook to use the Touch ID on it.. lol

Also I'm lazy enough to demand a seperate numeric keyboard…

This does seem like a good price. and am intrigued as to whether the key travel is very different to my old one.

  • The Grey one available?

I wish Apple sold a touch-id only peripheral. I use the work macbook at home in clamshell mode with a dock, meaning no touch ID access…but also don't want to pay $200 for a full keyboard just to get access to a single 'button' on the keyboard.

Guess I need to find a way to make my desk space work with the laptop open on an elevated stand or something so I can get easy access to touch ID…

    First world problems, I know

Can't you just type in password? :O

      • +2

        Not the same thing

      • I could yes - I also opt for a rather long, somewhat secure password that's a bit of a pain for when it's actually needed

Maybe you can look into something like this.

      https://www.kensington.com/en-au/software/verimark-setup/ver…

I have not used it myself and not sure how compatible it is but it says it works with macOS.

      • It seems this one cannot do TouchID stuff (system login, Apple pay, etc.), but rather only FIDO2 (passwordless login for websites) stuff on Mac.

I have a Verimark (old model), works good on Windows. However doesn't work on Mac or Linux, and comes with a fake software-based U2F implementation (I'd say that's bad compared to TPM-backed or hardware solutions like Yubikey).

An Apple Watch would be an expensive option… I tried one of these keyboards, but didn't like it at all so returned it. Main reason for trying it was the Touch ID, but my Apple Watch provides more or less the same experience - just need to double click the side button to authenticate.

      • Didn’t know you can do that, will give it a try, thanks!

      • Authenticator SW on mobile phone is the free option

      • I don't hate the Apple Watch authentication, but I kinda don't vibe with the Double Press.
I feel like I mess up the timing on it like 25% of the time as it's so outside of my typical desktop workflow

        • Yeah I've been using the Apple Watch authentication for a while now, but was still attracted by the Touch ID option on the keyboard hence why I picked it up… however I really disliked the feel of the keys on the keyboard so returned it and went back to the Apple Watch.

    • very first world lol

This is the one I wish was $80 on that eBay deal. Numpad is worth it.

includes a woven USB-C to Lightning Cable

My understanding is buying this accessory is one of the only ways to get a woven USB-C to Lightning cable. So I assume it will have a substantial resale value.

  • It says zero stock for me

    • This is still getting upvotes but upon checking out it's showing no stock. How are people managing to buy this?

      • Figured it out. There's a limit of 1

loving the Logitech MX keyboard with backlit keys. How do people feel between the two?

Touch ID with no backlit keys…. or Backlit keys without Touch ID…

    • MX keys much better & can get cheaper (mine ~$120). It charges with universal USB-C (Apple is forced by EU to switch to USB-C).
Comes with USB receiver & supports up to 3 devices. Lower latency for games.
Logitech Options S/W, & full Windows compatibility when you need it.

The only problem compared to my favourite, still running (bought 2 on special ~$20sh each:) , Logi G110 is the softness of the keys & sometimes accidentally activate keys when my fingers are slightly rested while I think & don't type.

    Dat product description. Rofl.

Wireless rechargeable keyboard with numpad and fancy login clearly didn't justify the price. So they came up with that overly dramatic product description then slapped apple and magic into the product name. I get it, but it's a laugh.

    • +1

But it's magical, I mean that's gotta be worth a lot more, right? …
I like many of the names Apple give to their products, but this is not one of them, it just sounds cheesy IMO.

It's honestly the best keyboard I have ever used. My favourite used to be the original slim aluminium Apple keyboard from like over a decade ago, I stocked up on preowned ones whenever I see them cheap. But this new one feels just a little bit better. I really don't understand the appeal of mechanical keyboards, I think it's kind of a fad based on conventional wisdom from the very early days of home computing. Quality chiclet keyboard is where it's at.

I am an Apple apologist and even this is too much, what an absurd price point for a keyboard, even at the sale price.

The black one is $279 RRP lol

      • +2

        But black is faster, right?

      • Black makes you look professional / serious ~ is it ?

      • yeah, apparently the black version is way more desirable. Of course that is the 'Pro' colour…

I'm happy with the white one on a desk. Much more visible at night.

I have the last of the intel MacBook Pro 16" which I bought only the beginning of this year brand new from Apple, it has Touch ID built in. I keep seeing conflicting info on wether the Touch ID will work on this keyboard when paired, officially according to apple it doesn't but can anyone confirm they have tried?

Edit: I have read a post which suggests it works will apple silicon AND T2 chip Macs. Which supposedly includes my model.

    • Update: Doesn't work
