I bought one of these when they were on sale at PAX Aus last month, and I've been surprisingly impressed with it. It comes with an 'Atari OS' built in (based on Linux) and there's some great games both old and and new. (Thrusterlander is one cool new one). It's also built for easy expansion with a reasonably well specced x86 PC mode that can run Windows 10/11 and Linux. Inside the case you can upgrade the DDR RAM and there's space for NVME storage expansion too. This handy Youtube video shows some of the ways to increase the speed as well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSKTYPXgWsU

Storage upgrade is m2 sata internal ssd

      • You're correct. It's m2.

        • +1

FYI, NVME is a different mount to SATA, that’s what I was trying to clarify

I’d personally just pay a bit more and get a Series S and install Retroarch. But that’s just me.

  • Still need to buy the games its not like the other minis its basicly a rysen 3 or a 1/2 powered xbox seris s that runs windows 10 and linux (atari os)

    • +2

It comes with a copy of Atari vault. 100 classic Atari games.

Plus you can install steam on it if it's Linux based…

It's not a mini console, it's like a proper large console.

  • I think if it could be a good emulation box, but needing to buy extra storage, a find it a bit too much

    At least for that purpose

  • can this run windows?

    • +1

      Yes

      • just looked up the specs, probably $200 is more reasonable. For some reason I thought it had an 8 core cpu.

    Landfill like E.T.

Me: Oh cool, it's only 300 now, I could almost buy it for a fun emulation box

Also me: Has a Wii U filled with GameCube games, an NVIDIA Shield with the same and Dreamcast and PS1 and so on, a million hand held emulators, a Series S in the bedroom with PCSX2, a Series X in the lounge room with PCSX2 as well, and so on.

    I'll take ten

    • +1

for a fun emulation box I'd recommend xbox series S - can run upscaled 4K games very nicely up to PS2 era.

    • I do the same. What is the appeal of getting a new handheld or console and getting it to run old games? I don't understand yet I keep doing it.

    • I was also thinking about buying for emulation, then looked over at the nes, snes, n64, wii, master system, megadrive, atari 2600, ps1, ps2, ps3, gameboy, 3ds, switch, xbone and now ps4 all gathering dust.. Oof.

  • Got it earlier on Amazon. Was wondering who they matched.

  • I was keen but when it first came out the price was stupid

Now I’m more interested but how long is this gonna stay alive for before Atari pull the pin on it

    • It won't but in 10 years these will be worth a heap to collectors.

      • Nah it's not really atari

        • +3

I agree but in 10 years it will be a rare, hardly purchased piece of Tech linked to Atari.

  • Would this run Disco Elysium?

  • The Gamesmen has updated the page. Stock is now available online only.
Shipping is variable so Amazon may be slightly cheaper. Thanks lulzenberg for spotting that.

Amazon has only 5 left in stock. I can't find Atari VCS on the Gamesmen's eBay store now. Amazon may change their price very soon.

    Amazon is now $500ish

    • Thanks Twisty. Strange they don't price match the Gamesmen site. No matter, I'd still buy from Gamesmen to support an Aussie business.

      • All good. I might have got one if it was $250 or under but I was brave and strong and didn’t bite at the $300 hahahH

  • I remember the original Atari were under $100 back in the days.
I assume these modern ones have more capabilities ?

    • This is a basic modern computer in the shell of an Atari console. In no way comparable.

    • A approx. $100 item from the early 80's is close to $400 in todays value so the price of this item is actually cheaper now than it was then.

I don't recall my salary multiplying by 4…
Guess I am in the wrong field.

      • The original Atari was $314 when first released in @1980?

        • Original $100 response was in relation to another user quoting $100. $314 in the early 80's would even be more again with inflation in 2022 making the sale cost of this item now even seem more a bargain.

          • @User50301: So many people do not realise this. It was like 2 weeks wages for some people back then. I had one, and all of a sudden,I had friends.
