Officeworks matches and beats the price by 5%. Bought space grey for $455.05

    • True but Officeworks around my area has no stock of silver or space grey.

U can just call up and they will mail it to u

Good to know. Do they charge delivery?

        • Can't use gift cards online for that extra 10% stacked saving:(

    • +1

Wouldn't it be cheaper to price match the Silver model from OW for $426.55?

  • Does the pen 1 work with this? Is there any deal for that?
    Thanks

    • +10

Did you even open the listing?… it says Gen 1 pencil support all over the place.

    • +13

Unless you are a digital artist and need pressure sensitivity and angle detection you don't need to spend so much on a Apple Pencil.

I have been using this $25 stylus from Amazon AU and it works really really well.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Binsg-Rejection-Compatible-2018-20…

Also one more benefit of the cheaper stylus is it doesn't need to be charged once a week like Apple Pencil which loses battery very quickly even if you don't use it.
The $25 has a physical on/off button and the battery doesn't need to be charged for months when it's switched off.

      • +5

There is actually a coupon you can apply to this one, making it currently $22.39. Thanks for the suggestion

        • Should be $25 after coupon applied last time I checked the price before coupon is $27.99.

Edit: My mistake you are correct it's $22.39 after coupon, maybe the coupon was for a different % at the time I ordered it.

      • thanks for that. Ive often wanted to have a play but $150 or thereabouts is a lot of money for what it is

        • In my opinion for the casual user the one I linked is the best option.

And being a casual user, I am not going to use it for creating artworks although that is entirely possible with the $25 one, or be using it multiple times a day and might have sit for a week or two at a time without being used. Leave the Apple pencil unused for a week and you end up with 0% charge in the battery. And not being a digital artist I don't really require those extra features the Apple Pencil offers e.g. accurately simulating a paint brush etc.

      • From the listing, in one pic the tip looks the same as the Apple one yet other pics it look smaller and says it has a soft tip. What sort of tip does it have? Might pick one up to compare.

        • I have been using this $25 stylus from Amazon

Careful of these units - there’s at least 6 different versions. A major physical difference between them is the USB-C charging port but there are functional differences too

          • -1

@0jay: "A major physical difference between them is the USB-C charging port but there are functional differences too"

Yes there are functional differences. But in my opinion for the casual user not $160 worth of functional differences and paying $185 for the Apple Pencil. And that price is for the cheaper Apple Pencil.

Also I don't recommend the USB-C charge port one, that one uses a touch sensor on the end for triggering on/off and it is easy to accidentally turn the stylus off while using it. The one I recommended in my opinion is the best of the bunch of budget styluses for iPad.

The one I recommend is the Binsg 4th Gen stylus that I linked to. It uses a thin laptop style barrel connector on the end to charge.

            • +1

              @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm:

But in my opinion for the casual user not $160 worth of functional differences and paying $185 for the Apple Pencil.

I’m talking about functional differences between versions of the Binsg stylus.

There are at least (that I can find) six versions, all compatible with the same suite of iPads (the various models) but with some differences.

I have zero issue with you recommending people try this product but I think it worthwhile pointing out there are several variations of the same product that may or may not alter the value proposition for the buyer.

It’s not a question of don’t buy, I’m saying make sure you buy the version that suits you best.

              • @0jay: "but I think it worthwhile pointing out there are several variations of the same product that may or may not alter the value proposition for the buyer."

Yup I agree 100%. The variations are confusing and back when I got this Binsg stylus searched through a lot of written and video feedback and this 4th gen had consistent good feedback in terms of usability. It took some effort to find as well, because it is sold under different brand and model names in other countries. I had to find it on Amazon AU through the design appearance in the picture and to my satisfaction it arrived exactly as shown and worked flawlessly as described.

Some features I remember on the other models were, a magnetic cap on the end which allows access to 1 spare tip inside, so you don't lose it. And as you already mentioned the USB-C port on the side for charging. For me though these features didn't outweigh the negative aspects of those versions. From what I remember the magnetic cap one only came with 1 spare tip and the USB-C version had the touch sensor on the end which caused problems.

"It’s not a question of don’t buy, I’m saying make sure you buy the version that suits you best."

Yup no worries at all. I understand you are warning people of some differences and value proposition is different for everybody.
Maybe I should have made it clear in my first comment, that I personally only recommend the model I linked and not the other variants.

        • I would say it feels in between soft and hard. Not hard enough to scratch your plastic screen protector, but not soft enough that you can squish it.
Just right in my opinion and basically what I would expect from the Apple pencil.

"Soft tip" might make it sound like it's really soft but it's not.

The tip is really pointy which I like. I think it's the claimed 1.2mm. The product looks like it does in the first Amazon picture.

      • By the way guys since so many people seem keen.

The stylus doesn't need to be paired via bluetooth so don't worry if your iPad can't find it lol. It's not a negative either, when in use it works seamlessly and exactly how I expected the Apple Pencil to work. Just turn it on with the physical button to use it and off when you are finished. Another bonus is you can instantly switch to using it on your phone or other device and it will continue to work exactly like it does on the iPad.
The stylus arrived almost fully charged, so I recommend keeping an eye on it if you decide to charge it before use. Mine finished charging in only a few minutes.

Also you might get a unexpected message from the seller, it was a bit confusing because I usually don't get messages from sellers I have purchased from. But I recommend you keep that email, because you can communicate with the seller directly by replying to the email if you have any issues. Keep in mind this is only necessary if you want a replacement or need extra tips later on. If you want a refund just go through the normal Amazon returns process.
I remember one review saying their stylus arrived with a faulty battery. You never know if you may have issues so responding to the email will be helpful in the near future if you need a replacement.

They also state in their message that they are more than willing to provide replacement tips, but mine arrived with 2 or 3 extra tips in the box so I think that's more than enough for a $23 stylus.

        • Edit: correction the Binsg stylus or Apple pencil for that matter does not work on phones. I did not know this but the iPad's after 6th gen have a special kind of display which supports stylus'. Which is a shame because I wanted to have more fine control of certain apps on the phone as well. Only to find out it doesn't work on the iPhone. My mistake for expecting that when it is clearly written it only works on iPad.
The Binsg stylus just like the Apple pencil will only work on iPad with the special display which is 6th gen and later.

    • Pen 1 certainly works

  • Is it cheaper with apple edu store?

  • +1

is this worth getting now that m1 is common? how many years of use do we get out of this chip? (asking for parents type use)

    • +10

If parents use is web browsing, checking the weather, videocalling the overseas kids etc. many many years… my oldies still going with their 2014 iPad Airs. (ill be upgrading them soon though since the 9th Gen looks like the last in this form factor - the big bezels to hold without touching the screen and physical home button are critical features)

The M1 / M2 silicon is really amazing tech and honestly far too capable even for the top-end iPads.

      • Have to agree. I bought an iPad Air with the A14 chip just before they announced the M1 version, and even it is way more power than necessary for a tablet.

      • Thanks. Is this Ipad good to make video calls to kids living in Australia? Still a bit unsure if I have to fork out a bit extra for 10th gen considering squarish edges. Rounded edges resemble me my 2nd gen Ipad and first wife that used this ipad… A bit of mental of that shape that takes me back in the past.

        • +1

Is this Ipad good to make video calls to kids living in Australia? Still a bit unsure if I have to fork out a bit extra for 10th gen considering squarish edges.

This will be perfectly fine for video calls. I use my older 7th gen for this purpose with no issues.

The only feature the 10th gen has in this regard that I'd like someday in the future (but not for $749) is that the front-facing camera is in the centre of one of the longer sides. This placement is better when using the iPad in landscape mode, as compared to all the other models where it is on the top (i.e. one of the shorter sides) so that when you have the iPad in landscape your eyes might appear not to be looking directly at the people on screen.

    • -3

Not worth it in my opinion. This is now a very old design, dating back to the 3rd generation iPad released in 2012. Essentially the same display and resolution, form factor, same plasticky screen, slow refresh rate which makes it feel really sluggish. Once you've tried a pro you can never go back. I'd prefer a decent android tablet over the basic iPad to be honest.

      • +10

This is essentially for primary school kids and grandparents. It's more than fine for them

      • +2

This shape dates back to the iPad Air of 2013, the 3rd gen 2012 iPad was an absolute brick that could be used to kill somebody (I owned one, didn't kill anybody though).

As for Android tablet vs iPad, if you have an Android phone, sure. If you're already in the Apple ecosystem, even the worst iPad is better than the best Android.

MIL has a 2014 Air 2 that she uses everyday but has just lost iPadOS support. She wants a large screen device for content consumption/basic computing that any Android tablet could do, but she also wants to sync with our shared family iCloud photo album, fiddle with her Apple Fitness data from her watch, send us silly GIF memes over iMessage etc etc - this iPad will do the job perfectly for those things where an Android couldn't.

I just got an M2 Pro which is awesome for me, but would be wasted on her. Apple know their various target markets pretty well I reckon.

      • +1

Use the latest 16" MacBook Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro and I find the older iPads better for me as the screen is good enough, they are way cheaper and the rounded corners are WAY more comfortable to hold for longer use. All IMHO.

    • +1

Depends what your parents use it for but mine are still happy with the 5th gen. I am upgrading my 7th gen with this one though so they might get an upgrade too now :)

    • +3

You would get pretty good performance from this iPad and be able to handle all the casual tasks like web browsing, document write up, emails, video calls etc with no issues. It basically has the same chip as an iPhone 11. Apple will continue to support this iPad for many years to come, for example the iPad 5th Generation released in 2017 is still supported on the latest OS. Just don't get the 10th gen as that is $749 and is ridiculously overpriced, so you might as well pay a bit more for an iPad Air with much better performance.

    • Since the 5th gen (2017) is still supported I think you'll get a good amount of time out of it. 5+ years of updates usually.

M1 is an ARM platform, and the A series chips in the ipads are still ARM so no problems there.

  • Do they normally include this line of ipad for their back to school deals?

    • There is edu pricing all year round. If you mean the deals with free airpods/beats/etc. then no - last year it was iPad Air & iPad Pro only (i.e. no 9th gen iPad or iPad mini)

  • +3

For anyone wanting to call OW (Officeworks) for a Price Beat by 5%: 1300 633 423

  • +7

I have this tablet and it is great value IMO. No need to splurge any more.

Combine it with this $25 stylus and be fully satisfied.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Binsg-Rejection-Compatible-2018-20…

    • Thanks for suggesting the pen. Just bought. Thanks.

      • +1

No problem. The only functions the Apple pencil has that the Binsg doesn't is; pressure sensitivity, angle detection and the handwriting to text input conversion (scribble) which apparently doesn't work too well and most people who take notes with iPad's just hand write neatly in a notes app with lines anyway.

Honestly the huge savings in price, much better battery life and it's ability to keep battery when switched off of the Binsg 4th gen were definitely worth it for me. Apparently the Apple Pencil drains 10% battery everyday even when it's just sitting unused so that means you need to keep it charged every 7 or 8 days or so or you will end up with a Apple pencil that doesn't turn on.

To correct myself though the 1st gen Apple pencil without any extra tips can be found now on Amazon AU for $138. I was probably thinking of the 1st gen Apple pencil with extra tips for $185, but that one is $166 now. So to whoever is reading this you can reconsider if the Apple Pencil with extra tips is good enough value for $166. But if your use case is casual like me I think $23 for the Binsg is much more reasonable.

  • Wait and get the iPad Air? Is it worth than this model?

    • It’ll be very expensive. It depends on what use you have. This is a very fast IPad already. I think the new air would be an overkill, but it really depends on what you use it for.

  • +3

    This was 399 months ago

    • Thank inflation.

    • u sure? I checked invoice for the same ipad bought 2 years ago, was $465

    • +1

Yes, that was the time to pounce ideally but since Apple raised the RRP to $549, I’m not optimistic we’ll see the same again soon. I’m also wondering if the others who still have it at around $499 will follow suit once their older stock is cleared out (JB did so pretty quick anyway).

      • As a follow up to my comment above, after selling out during the original deal, Amazon has hiked the price of the silver 64GB model up to $547, i.e. nearly the new RRP. Space grey is still $479 for now.

Let’s see what sort of discounts appear around the BF/CM weekend.

    • +1

Amazon was price matching (what ending being a price error) DJs. The ultimate deal was getting it price beat at OW for $379 ;)

  • +2

Price beat successful at OW via phone and pickup instore! Silver model $426.55

  • +1

Same here, successful OW price beat via phone. Only prob was local OW only had 1 left in stock, so 50/50 whether it's really there or not. Delivery isn't possible due to low stock.

    • They get them posted from other store with stock. I price matched an iphone a couple month ago, same deal.

      • Phone operator told me not enough stock on hand for delivery, instore pickup only option.

        • So maybe buy from Amazon too just incase and return it once ow confirms stock?

  • +1

Thanks OP, quite timely for me as I was in the market for this one. I also have a fair bit of Amazon gift card credit (3% discount) in my account since cancelling an iPhone backorder yesterday as well as a $5 promo I nearly forgot about thanks to an earlier OzB deal, so a net $430.68 was good enough for me with no OW with stock near me.

  • +1

This or wait for Black Friday sales?

    • prob the biggest question.. would love to know.. but since they did the price rise i dont think it'll get much better than this.. i'm going to pull the trigger on it but hope that it does get some crazy BF/CM treatment..

    • +2

I would lean a little towards waiting.

There should be plenty of iPad 9's around, so another sale is pretty likely. The main reason to wait is to try and snag one with higher storage (128GB or 256GB). That 64GB is just too anaemic for modern use (App sizes have gotten larger, not to mention your Office Files or others, and lastly you'll need to spare some of that precious space for OTA updates).

      • Unfortunately there is no 128GB version of the iPad 9 and the (new) RRP of the 256GB is $799, so it is quite a step up from the 64GB model even when on sale. Depends on individual needs of course.

There could well be better discounts on the base iPad 9 in the next couple of months though—we had the latest Pro at 15% off earlier today.

  • +1

This is the one with lighting port right. I will wait bit more until they get rid of it across all their base model

    • You have that option right now with the base version 10th Gen @ $749. $300 for a USB-C connector seems a lot.

      • Lightning is annoying sure purely cause I have to carry an extra cable but otherwise I don’t see the big deal. This just a baseline iPad.

    • +1

Same here, holding when the previous $399 deal was on, but when the new ipad comes with a 50% more price tag, back to the 9th gen one. Not worth the $300 for primary student for just a usb-c. buy this one for a cheap price, or add $100 or something to get a ipad air instead of the new ipad (10th gen)

      • Is the USB-C even functional on the iPad (besides charging or iTunes) ?

As much as everyone hates the Lightning Port, you can't deny that there are lots of accessories that use it. Mostly for iPhone but they also work on iPad. Which is a positive thing in my book.

        • "Is the USB-C even functional on the iPad (besides charging or iTunes) ?"

I remember reading on the cheaper iPad's with USB-C the port is wired to be USB2.0. So while it is technically functional with external drives etc, you won't get fast data transfer and some of the advanced capability is limited e.g. external display support.
Only the iPad Pro models are wired as USB3.X and support thunderbolt etc for external displays and super fast data transfer with SSD drives etc.

    • After this model is discontinued the base model will be the 10.9" model just released:

      https://www.apple.com/au/ipad-10.9/

Only problem is its $200 more expensive than the normal price of this one and $300 more than this particular deal.

  • +1

thank you. got one for my mama

  • Bit the bullet and price matched (price beat) Amazon $459 at OW $436.05 a few weeks ago… So that I could get my $39.64 GST back from TRS.
So got it down below that $399 price point that it should be at.👍

  • I’m still using an iPad Pro 9.7 which I think is 2016. The battery needs replacing which is $250ish I think but other than that it does everything I need it to.
Would this deal be a better option than replacing the battery?

    • +1

This would be a wayyyy better deal than replacing your battery. Your current iPad will likely lose iPadOS support in September 2023, for only $200 more than a battery replacement you get a whole new device which is much faster and will have support for years to come.

  • I've used an iPad air 2 before. Is this model similar to it, thin and less air gap in the screen?

    • The dimensions of the device are similar, but this doesn't have the laminated display of your Air 2, so it has an air gap between the cover glass and display.

      • Ok thanks, feels like bit oldish then

        • Yeah unfortunately you have to go up to the $1000 Air 5 to get a laminated display.

    • +1

I am happy with the non laminated display of the 9th gen. Honestly I never noticed it, and the only way I can tell is if I hold the iPad close to my face and look sideways into the bezel.
The only real complaints I have read regarding non laminated is with Apple pencil/stylus use the laminated display feels more natural and like directly writing on paper. But I recently got a stylus and can't really say I've noticed anything is missing either.

One thing I just looked up and I think sucks though is the new few hundred dollar more expensive 10th Gen budget iPad model does not have a laminated display either. Seriously for that big bump in price I would have expected it since it is very similar in design to the new iPad Air models which also have the edge to edge display. Seems like Apple deliberately took that laminated part out just to save costs. Shrinkflation I guess.

  • +1

Thanks OP I and wife got 2 for the twins as needed for a school next year. That's Christmas kina sorted. Only low stock in SA at one OW so didn't want to risk it overnight

  • Thank you. Managed to get 3 at OW with price beat.

    • in-store or over the phone? it tried calling my local but they said I need to come into the store.

      • Via the 1300 number. I needed 4 for my kids, but would only do 3. As 4 is commercial business 🤦🏻‍♂️. So then price matched at JB as had vouchers to cover.

  • 1300 633 423 is closed.

how long does this Amazon deal last for? I'll be heading to my closest store tomorrow but worried this will sell out.

  • +4

Price beated the silver one at my local Preston OW, they have 4 left when I left. Used my ultimate everyone gift card bought from Coles today, so about $390 in the end. Was hoping to get a cheaper one from Apple when they release 10th Gen, but instead they raised their price.

  • +2

A reminder to those who are going to OW Garden City. The staff said they can only do price match not beat since they cannot find Model number on desktop website even when I showed it on my mobile App.

Tried to get $ 22.45 more and lost a $426.55 sale. What a genius.

    • The exact model number is on the desktop site, towards the bottom of the page, just above reviews.

      • Do you mean MK2L3X/A? I tried to search the page but no luck.

  • +2

Thanks OP, price matched @ JB

    • Nice. I tried to price match at GG as I had a GG gift card. Person at GG declined to price match Amazon as it is "below their cost".

      • +1

Thats bullshit. They probably want to get too much profit.

      • +1

Get them to price match David Jones (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/734731). Their policy is not to price match online stores but they should price match competitor physical stores. If you are with Commbank, check if you have a reward offer to get $30 back on $300 spent. That'd bring the price down to $419.

  • What's the most OZB iPad that is > 64gb?

    • +1

I'd also like to know. 64 just feels ancient. This jumps from 64 to 256!

  • is the cellular version also on sale?

  • This is a 3GB model I think. I would stay away from ipads with smaller memory. I have an ipad with 2GB ram from 2017, the CPU is still great but apps are forced closed when I open other. DO NOT BUY IT for this price. This is daylight robbery. Buy atleast a 4 or even a 6GB ipad.

    https://www.gsmarena.com/apple_ipad_10_2_(2021)-11106.php

  • This listing shows $497 for silver when I follow the deal link.

    • Deal occurred yesterday, it’s expired now.

  • Still $449 for space gray
