Real shame this doesnt have a regular AM tuner too. DAB+ was a bit of a failure in Australia and now its all about streaming

yes i still have that Kogan Sangean $45 dab radio… literally ran it for an hour and worked out that the sub mp3 quality sound and the terrible stations meant that dab is a giant waste of time…. and this is 3.5mm passed to a proper stereo system.

    • Yeah listened for a bit and gave up. Sub quality.
      Trash unless you like Jazz.

i gave it to my olds as they occasionally listen to AM and its an ok emergency radio if the world is coming to an end and you want to commit suicide to the soothing tones of Kyle and Jackie O

AM is still great if you want to listen to stuff like Grandstand AFL and get the full boradcast. If you listen through the AFL app they cut it off before ABC has finished and you miss out on a ton of post match

    "RRP $249".

    Yeah, nah.

back in the dark days of micro usb it probably did retail here for that much… when people thought dab was going somewhere

now we know dab has died in the (profanity) then yeah.. $49 sounds like… still not worth it

I remember seeing old timey style DAB radios for $100 at least 5 years ago, so you're not wrong about the days of micro USB. This may have been the correct RRP, maybe a decade ago. Shonky claim at best, outright bullshit at worst.

    • it nearly worked on me though

      • For shame Johnny B!

  • And there I was thinking dabs were something stoners do with glass nails, not a failed/ing radio broadcast standard.

  • OP, just checking that these come with a power adapter?

    • +1

Yes they do! If you don't want to use the portable function you can plug into power :)

      • Great, thanks!

  • Could have been OK at the time but for some unknown reason the industry cheaped-out on the bitrate and seemed to have no consistent standards

    • A vast majority of people dgaf about quality, they'd prefer more choice.

      • Well it doesnt really do that either. No limits in choice with streaming, but DAB? Not so much
Have you heard DAB+? The bitrate is horrible. Often 32kbs. Worse that the shonkiest MP3s
You will immediately notice it if you hear a song you know. Its bad

  • I don't think Australia has the population density for DAB/DAB+ to be feasible. Certainly in Europe it is much more feasible, with most newer vehicles fitted with DAB/DAB+ radios as standard. Some countries (Norway, Switzerland) DAB has replaced FM.

I prefer the variety of streaming radio.

The problem in Oz was that the power output was hamstrung because the regional stations were/are paying enormous amounts in frequency licensing to the Feds and thus whinged about big city stations impeding into their air space.

So the max transmission power was limited which meant significant numbers in the big cities couldn't even get a consistent DAB reception for local stations at home or in a car.

The thing that shits me about streaming radio is having to run 5 different bloody apps. Ages ago i paid for the premium tunein app, now most stations wont stream because the providers have blocked off the streams to other apps. Now i have to have radioapp, iheartradio, digitallyimported, abc listen, etc… just too hard.

  • Just give me an FM radio with incredible reception.

(History: I bought a $700 ruark and it's shit. Average reception and worst UI ever (want to go up a channel using presets? press the preset button, press right/left, press ok. That defeats the point of presets!) but you can't find reviews that discuss reception or UI.. only how the inbuilt speakers sound.. which was useless to me)

  • I don't understand the DAB hate. For the first time in my life, all 3 lots of 6 x presets in my car stereo are actually tuned to channels that i would listen to.
