Showing as special order with 14 day lead time at all my local Total Tools.

Same price at Trade Tools and C&L. Do yourself a favour and stay away from the grubs at Sydney Tools.

OOS at Amazon but good reviews

      • What's wrong with Sydney Tools?

        • +4

Have just never had a good experience with them and many tradie mates are of the same opinion.

Warranty issues are more difficult than anywhere else I've experienced, staff are rude and there are always a list of excuses why they won't price match. I stopped going to Sydney Tools years ago and would encourage others to do the same.

I was about to say that that’s a normal price, then noticed it’s 2 piece set. Makes it really good price, you basically get a second knife for free.

For opening packages? Any other good uses? Not sure if I am about to buy it just to open packages as seems like a good deal?

    • +8

Good for cutting boxes. Only way to fit all the Amazon boxes into the recycle bin.

      • Haha current blade isn't the sharpest anymore but still can open packages. Then cut and fold? This does seem more durable.

        • Just need to replace the blade every so often. Maybe try to clean them with some rubbing alcohol. Seems like the sticky residue left from all of the tape you are slicing through causes the blade to stick. In any case, blades aren't that expensive really, especially if you get them in bulk.

      • I just do the caveman and rip them apart with my bare hands. Makes the missus all steamy seeing so much raw power. ;)

Use this every day at work, for much more than opening boxes. It uses disposable blades so not afraid to dull it. Cut cardboard and rubber sheets, cable ties when no cutters available, even precision work cutting around pipes and cables.
Opening mechanism is quick and one-handed. Can drop it when closed and takes impact well. Used it for over 2 years and looks hardly worn.

      • Thanks for sharing the experience! Wouldn't cutting cable ties destroy them quickly? Ah precision work too.

        • +3

I bought this exact bundle from Sydney tools, from memory it was around $30. Carry the compact knife (48221500) as it's lighter and thinner so can put in the front pocket of my work pants without it bulging or catching on objects. Also hardly change the blades so no need to carry the model with the magazine.
Destory the cable tie? We use cable ties for holding on cables for moving machinery and bagging spares, so they are disposable.

          • @sobriety22: I meant destroy the blades, sorry. Or cable ties won't blunt them much? I watched that youtube video posted below where they get destroyed testing it against copper, staples, etc!

You've convinced me though! Guess my wallet is lighter now!

            • +1

@JL1: If you cut downwards onto a hard metal surface to cut them yes, but cable ties are plastic and once you cut through halfway they break fairly easily. I don't find that the blade dulls easily doing this task, I just try and maintain the tip by not dropping it while open or cutting forcefully against hard surfaces and I find a blade (and you can flip it round so you get two tips out of each one) lasts me months of use.

              • @sobriety22: Thanks for your experience and tip to flip it around! Very nice knife, haha, want to open more things with it.

youd only buy this is you were a warehouse guy or a handyman etc.

piles of generic ones at bunnings for a few bucks

      • The good thing with this knife is it folds in half. Half the length and the compact model is even thinner than some retractable knives.

This Fastback also has a push-button lock that keeps it shut when closed or open. I have had many number of times the blade pushes out on the retractables (used to run a Stanley Fatmax) and cuts your clothing or stabs your skin. Yes, it has a lock on the end to stop the blade from sliding in or out but that is a two handed operation each time you take it out to use and put it back again. Flips just are better.

    • The notch on the blade holder on the bottom one is a wirestripper - not a great one, but if it saves you going back down the ladder and back to the truck it's pretty good - and the notch on the back of the handle lets you cut string without getting the blade out (and risking cutting yourself).

I knew it was Project Farm before I even clicked the link. Todd should trademark the saying haha

I have one of these for opening mail, cutting up boxes and assorted tasks. Flipping the thing open is extremely satisfying, worth the cost alone.

  • think i'll get these for my mum. it always makes me nervous watching her use an old and wobbly snap-off knife that doesn't even lock the blade in place any more.

i've got an earlier version of the fastback folding that also flips open. very sturdy and i particularly like the handle material that's grippy but not so coarse that it burns holes in your pants. the wire pocket clip is weak and bends too easily though.

  • Where are these made?

      you would expect nothing less

      • Legend! Thanks
My last Milwaukee tools were made in Taiwan. Happy to buy tools made in Taiwan but not China

  • thanks - purchased

I've got the knife on the bottom of the pic, and it's great. Metal handle, wire stripper, gut hook for cutting string without cutting yourself, choil for hooking your index finger into when you're cutting, and toolless blade-change and magnetic five-blade magazine for when it's time to change blades. Plus the mechanism is really satisfying.

My only complaint is that it's too well made to take ceramic blades, which are a little thicker. Ceramic blades are better for cutting cardboard as they stay sharp for longer.

Just noticed these guys have it as well for an extra 10c - https://www.tradetools.com/milwaukee-fastback-folding-utilit…

  • I bought the 48221500 (Fastback Compact) for $20.40.

Saved $6 by not getting the kit with the extra larger 48221502.

The $6 saved can go toward a bunch of blades.

  • Unfortunately I know a couple of Total Tools and there's no shortage of Sydney Tools…..

  • Damn…… I thought it came with the five spare blades….false advertising in the picture :)

      Includes

      • 1 x FASTBACK™ Flip Utility Knife with Blade Storage
      • 1 x FASTBACK™ Compact Folding Utility Knife

      No mention of included blades

      • Yes I know that now, I am talking about the picture!

        • Yep, I also bought and they came without blades - I just assumed that the picture was representative

  • Bought the Stanley one at Supercheap Auto a couple of weeks ago, very nice, ergonomically and aesthetically, fully happy with it. Comes with blade.
