  • This any good to run as a nas?

    • if youre ok with hanging drives off usb

or if you can find a DAS box off a single usb3 cable

    • I wonder.

It's mostly used by enthusiat to build a firewall, because it has a PCIe slot for a NIC.

      • Yeah decent for a pfsence firewall.

    • +1

better off buying usff / tiny i5 6xxx/7xxx/8xxx machines than this

these are just used for firewall / router as the pcie slot allows you to pop in a good network card

  • +1

Would make a good home assistant server..

    • I have been running a T610 for over 4 years now with upgraded SSD and RAM, never missed a beat.

    • I am running HASS on a T620. No complaints.

  • Have been thinking of this based on serve the home, these arent fanless though? Also doesn't really seem cheap enough to get instead of something like the below ($110 usd barebones, + ram+drive wouldnt be that much more and most people interested probably have spare unused parts)? Or is there some advantage, both won't have warranty, and the ali box should be quieter and more energy efficient?

    • I doubt the fan would be audible, those applications would hardly use more than 10% cpu.

      • +1

effectively $200 barebones, $250 for 8/128 gb running

the trump card is the 4 x nics…. i mean if you really need that for vlans etc then theres little choice

not much out there can run 4 nics without something even more expensive

        • Which do you think is better?
Good point adding the i350 is another 100 on this making the Ali chaper

  • If anyone is still looking for a compact box to run PFSense/OPNSense or such, consider looking at the Shuttle DHXXX series (DH110, DH170, DH270, etc). A little bit more expensive overall, but it comes with 2 Intel NICs on board and can handle a lot more power.

I picked up a DH270 + used i5-6600 for $250, and slapped in some SODIMMs and an SSD I had spare. Been running rock solid for a few months now, running a few ESXi hosted VMs with plenty of CPU and RAM headroom.
