Samsung Freestyle Projector $999 Delivered (Was $1299) + Free Skin ($49 Value) @ Samsung AU ($849.15 @ Samsung Edu)

110

Also includes a bonus 'skin' for free which normally retails at $49.

When the product launched earlier this year Samsung paid a lot of people to make reviews which ultimately weren't of much help. The general consensus is that it's a good product but not worth the usual $1299 price tag.

If you can get a Samsung $50 newsletter promotional code it will bring the price down a bit more. Or even better, if you have access to the Samsung Education Store, it is $849.15 there (best price from an Australian retailer so far) but no bonus skin,

Also available at JB Hi-Fi for $995

I enjoy mine but definitely only useful for a dark room (I have mine set up in my bedroom). The UI is also super laggy and slow. The remote often registers a double click which can be annoying. Overall it’s a nice package though.

      • only useful in a dark room
      • laggy UI
      • remote often double clicks on its own

How is this "a nice package" overall? Is the picture quality really good, no blurred areas etc? Still doesn't sound I'd be spending $999 on it.

Because the design of it is quite nice. It doesn’t look out of place on a bedside table (which is where I keep mine). I do like the samsung tv UI over some of the alternative mini projectors. I also enjoy being able to pivot the direction on the stand and the battery addon works pretty well. I haven't had any other mini projectors before but the image quality is good for me. I paid $850 and it included the battery pack, so probably couldn't justify $999 for this package. Just stating that for my use case it is perfect.

  • Wait for gen 2

  • Way overpriced for the specs.

Nobody should buy the Samsung Freestyle Projector. Here's why…
    https://youtu.be/1eqeOdbVPYw

    • I mean they are just mostly comparing lower resolution or generic brands compared to Samsung.

It has its shortcomings but they seem to have different downsides.

      • Sure….but 1k? You'd be better putting that 1k into a much higher spec option that's even considerably more. Seems like an average machine at a hefty price point.

  • Specs roundup: full HD, up to 100" (at 2.6 m distance), 550 lumens, noise 30db, DIGITAL keystone correction, 5W speaker, no built-in battery, but 50W/20V (PD) charging.

  • Does anyone have recommendations for alternative projectors suitable for the living room? (noting limitations vs TV).

    • Do you really need a projector? How big do you want the screen?

You can get a decent 65-75" 4k TV for around $1000 that would have waay better pq than a portable 500lm 1080p projector.

      • You just said it is 65-75 . There is a big jump of screen estate when you go from 75 to 100

        • Big dip in picture quality going from 4k to 1080p aswell. Let alone the dip in brightness, the need for a projector screen and having to control ambient lighting in the room.

500 lumens is barely enough for 100", you better make sure your living room is enclosed with block out blinds if you want to use it while the sun's out. Has he calculated if he's got enough distance from the wall to achieve 100"?

    • I personally have a ($1000) XGiMi Halo but have you looked into the (considerably more expensive) short throw projectors from Samsung or Hisense?

      • I've been doing some research on projectors as well for my theater room setup, I've currently got roughly 7-year-old curved Samsung 77-inch 4K tv.

Samsung ones have very average reviews and have some issues with chips from wider range of reviews and Hisense is a big no no, they've stitched us up bad in Au market. US version of same model projectors get Android OS, HDMI 2.1, USB 3 and so on but we get none of that here, all the videos and reviews you see are all from US.

I ordered 3 times and they just get cancelled.

        • Weird.

          I've never ordered one.

        • I just ordered once, they charged me even item not dispatched, still need to check if it was refunded , bad experience overall

  • Yeah way too much for lcd or dlp. laser projectors are hovering around $1K for shit80P.

  • didn't know the key stoning was digital. Doesn't that mean that potentially your picture will be even less than 1080 P??

    • There's no way the lense would physically articulate that much, at best you get a few degrees on non portable models.

But yes, unless your projector is dead flat perpendicular to the wall, then you're not getting a full 1080p picture.

Can anyone advise if this is a good buy for $699? Before someone asks how i got it for $699, the guy on the chat provided me 30% discount code for freestyle projector if i buy it from samsung website.

    • I would be happy with that price if it’s suitable for your needs

      • for your needs

Its a 'want', not a need :). Anyway bought, thanks

    • Would I be able to get a the discount code if I speak to the same guy? What chat was this?

      • Sorry cant remember the guys name and not sure if you can get the code but its worth a try. The chatt window appeared while i was browsing the samsung website.

      • I got a code at the weekend added to my checkout by Sarah in chat. Just told her a friend on a forum had received the same. It expired as I tried waiting for the newsletter $50 code by email (which still hasn’t arrived). Tried again for a discount code today and no dice.
I’d advise requesting at the weekend when they’re more chilled.

  • I tried watching a movie on one of these. Not sure if my friends unit was just faulty or what. But the experience was not good. Passable, but not at the price. Required a really dark room to be effective and was otherwise overpowered by any light source. If this was say $300-$500, maybe.
