i have question:
my laptop currently has 1x Samsung 8GB DDR4-2666 (1333 MHz), and there is second slot.
if i buy the 1st Crucial one 2666MHz, will they go along and create dual channel thingie ? i know the best is to use same brand, but just curious.
is that CL19 matters ? i think my samsung is CL17 from googling. thanks

Got two at $35 each a couple of weeks ago
    This price is pretty ordinary

Usually you should get the same ram for both slots but its no biggie if you mix n match (might lose single % performance but it won't be noticeable really).

If you use 2 different speeds, it usually defaults to the slowest speed of the two.

      100% this, OP.

You can find the timings of the ram on the sides of the sticks, usually looking like "13-32-9-26".

Your laptop won't have any issues with using 1 x Samsung 8gb DDR4-2666 and 1 x Crucial 8gb DDR4-2666. It will still run in dual channel.

  • on 2nd thought i may get second hand from marketplace

    • Why?

      • The irony in your username. Because it's cheaper, of course! Also, OP may have more luck finding similarly-specced RAM as they currently have, but as others pointed out this isn't really a concern.

        • From the links I can see on Amazon you can get 8GB DDR4 Crucial SODIMM RAM for $35. From what I can see on marketplace, it's $30 + bother of meeting up (or posting- expense there) and you're buying a used computer part from a complete stranger.

Going new is a no brainer for that little of a difference.

Edit: link posted below if anyone's interested

          • @pennypincher98: Hmm ok let me think.
Lots people selling second hand 2x8gb for 50,60$ but that means i will endup with one unused and it still waste.

Get this one and be done, maybe better option.

@CyberMurning: If you can get a used Samsung 8GB like you already have for maybe $20 it would be worth it. If it fails / you want to claim warranty, you'll likely need proof of purchase which Amazon gives and marketplace probably won't.

Up to you. I ordered (different) RAM from Amazon in the evening and it came in the morning. Installed it that morning for use that morning. No issues. For me, the time saving outweighed any potential financial saving. You might want to shop around a bit, if urgency/time is less of an issue than money. The price isn't likely to skyrocket on Amazon tomorrow.

@pennypincher98: yup. got it. $20 is impossible you know all the sellers are delusional, just because they bought at $100 and "barely used", 2 year later they want to sell for $80 when brand new is now $75 — just example not RAM

          • @pennypincher98: Fair I hadn't looked at marketplace. Please don't forget though that you have the power of haggling on marketplace. Works wonderfully for items like these that aren't all that popular.

    • That's expensive, if you after Patriot only $33.15

  • I am currently running this
1x Samsung 8GB DDR4-2666 (1333 MHz), and there is second slot.

Idk if it's going to cause any harm in the long run but
based on ZCPU it's running faster than the 2666 & has lower latency than the CL22

    • im also running zcpu last night. i couldnt see the CL but from googling i found says CL17.
if i buy from amazon i will pick the same 2666 one not 3200, so the diff. is only CL 19 and 17

      • The higher the frequency can downward compatible but not other way around, so if lowest run at 2666, then the rest will run at 2666 even 3200 capable ram. On laptop don't care the latency you won't notice any different in real work, not sure about gaming since my eyes can only see 60fps or less.

        not my screenshot but google.
also re the speed. depending on the gen of your CPU, the older cpu is capped at 2666mhz anyway
