    Shame about the shipping

    • Because it includes shipping to your house and then from your house to Ireland.

      • We ordered two kits on Thursday, they were shipped from Sydney and due here (according to tracking) tomorrow. I have heard the Ancestry, com laboratory's is abroad, so Ireland huh, but the results are made available at your online portal.

        • Yes, you sent it to Ireland and the wait game begins. Expect to wait 6-8 weeks to get your results.

Seen how the police use these type of databases to solve cold cases? Find family match of a DNA sample and then work their way through the family tree.

No connection - but I discourage anyone in my family from doing these tests.

agreed, why would you willingly hand over a DNA sample to a company that can at any point decide to sell / release this information to 3rd parties.

        From their website FAQ…

Quote… Your privacy is our highest priority. We use industry standard security practices to store your DNA sample, your DNA test results, and other personal data you provide to us. In addition, we store your DNA test results and DNA sample without your name or other common identifying information. You own your DNA data. At any time, you can choose to download raw DNA data, have us delete your DNA test results as described in the Ancestry® Privacy Statement, or have us destroy your physical DNA saliva sample. We do not share with third parties your name or other common identifying information linked to your genetic data, except as legally required or with your explicit consent… End Of Quote

It’s only a matter of time before your data gets out, and you can’t secure it after that.

The only permanently secure option is to not have your data stored at all.

    • A lot about it makes me nervous too. Such a shame because it would be fascinating.

Access to DNA data in ancestry websites could help crack cold cases.
"Familial searching" is a sophisticated test that helps track down perpetrators by linking crime scene DNA to their family members.

Forensic test catching killers and rapists through relatives' DNA

ABC "4 Corners" covered this recently.

We've ordered two kits and I have nothing whatsoever to worry about. In fact I'm a very boring person apart from the pot plant I raise each year for medical reasons and can't imagine the authorities would really be interested. My wife has never had so much as a speeding ticket, she's not worrying either. OTOH if I were a cat burglar, child molester or rapist things would be different.
I wonder if the cops look at our poo tests which we do for the bowel cancer people?

  • The Police Can Only get matches from Gedcom, & even that you can opt-out of police searches

    • GEDCOM is a file format. You're thinking of GedMatch. You'd need to upload your genome file to that service for it to have any relevance to this deal.

  • If you are paranoid about privacy but want to try it why not just use a pseudonym and fake email etc?

Every year after Christmas I read stories of family members that gift these to each other then find out they aren’t related. From some of the stuff I’ve read if you like your family and are all happy do not buy one as a Christmas present

    • Sounds like a great way to make Christmas more exciting
