The 1601 ball doesn't look any better than the $12.99 (regular price) Spalding from Rebel Sports.

  • +4

The BG3800 at $71.96 looks no different material wise from the 3501 $31 ones. I wonder who prices these things?? 99% is probably licensing costs it would appear! If someone tells me that the production cost of a basketball is less than a dollar it wouldn't surprise me.

    • +1

I played with the BG3800 the other day, and quite like it. Felt good to shoot.

    • Lol

      One is composite.

      One is rubber.

      They are both round.

  • I'm getting back into basketball and noticed all basketballs don't bounce like they used to. I bought a Wilson black and white ball in Kmart $40 and it's like a cheap knock off now when it used to be the premium ball. I have to get PSI up just so ball bounces back above waist level but then ball is hard and there's hardly any grip. I'm reluctant to buy before I try now.

    • +5

Sorry, the Wilson black and white ball in Kmart $40 isn't a good basketball, let alone a premium ball.

This Wilson ball is surprisingly very good for $29.. (normally $50) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/723165

Also, did you previously play indoors or outdoors?

      • +1

Yep the ball is pretty good!

        • +1

Good enough for Steph, good enough for me.

I do use it as an outdoor ball as I have better indoor only balls.

      • Indoors but I'm playing outdoors now recreationally. I'll check it out bringing my own pump to Rebel or sporting goods store.

        • +1

I have a guy I play ball with (indoors) that has that same ball.. he's always complains about his ball after using my ball.

That Wilson ball, even at full price is a good ball for outside.. great feel to it. Much better than an outdoor ball ought to be. On sale at $30 it was a bargain.

      • +1

Can confirm that the Wilson Showcase is a great ball for the sale price! Should have gotten more at that price. It's my go-to outdoor ball at the moment.

      • +1

I bought a red blue and white ball from kmart thinking it would be a great ball for an 8 yo. Bounce is terrible.

    • Put more air in it! Accidentally put 3 times the air in my cheap rebel Spalding, holy crap did that thing bounce. No explosions yet…

    • The new Moltens suck. Bring back the GG7X!

  • Can anyone recommend any of these for my 10 year old? I was thinking it might be a good xmas gift.

    • +1

Not Molten, but the Spalding TF Flex are good. My kids use one for indoor/outdoor. They use a size 6

      • Cheers!

        • +1

FYI: In domestic and representative basketball under 12s play with size 5 nowadays. Under 14s go up to a size 6.

    • +1

      Nothing from here.

Get him a size 6 ball.

I can suggest (in order of price)
      - https://decathlon.com.au/products/bt-500-fiba-basketball-siz…
      - https://www.rebelsport.com.au/p/spalding--tf-grind-basketbal…

They are all composite balls. Much better than rubber balls.

      • Cheers for that!

    • +1

Kids use a size 5 basketball until under 14s, so I would actually get size 5 (makes a big difference as they develop).

      • Oh cheers for that! He's tall but I don't think his hands are that big yet.

      • +2

        Sorry that's incorrect across Australia.

        In Victoria, in domestic leagues
        -U8 & U10 Size 5.
        -U12 & U14 Size 6.

        In Representative/State leagues across Australia
        U12 Size 5
        U14 Size 6.

        U16s and above- Girls/women size 6. Boys/mens Size 7.

Unless they play Representative basketball, 10yo should use a size 6. You'll know if your kids are playing Representative basketball.

        • +1

Interesting, didn't think about other states (being from WA, no one thinks about us for 6am video conferences either haha). My kid does play representative basketball, but I am pretty sure they use the same size for the same age group in his domestic comp too.

I didn't give it that much regard when initially purchasing a ball. I got him a size 6 as it seemed more practical, but in my situation that was a bad decision as it was important for him to use the ball the same size that he played with, both for assistance with getting used to the game setting, but also because he needed to take his ball to training and it needed to be the right size.

I would just suggest to adjust my original comment, get the size that they use in their specific competition, even if it's only for 1 more year. It makes a difference.

          • +1

            @TheZohan: haha, interesting.

Overall I think size 6 is fine for a 10yo player.

Previously in Domestic in our league, U10s were using a size 6 ball… then 2 years ago, they went to a size 5.

My son who plays also Rep, is using a mix of balls.. Size 5 for U12 rep and Size 6 for U12 Domestic. No ideal.

Representative basketball season just started again, RIP Friday nights and long weekends. haha

I agree, smaller ball is better for handling.. it pains me to see 6 year olds playing with a size 7 ball struggling to shoot it.

            • +2

@JimB: Never ends! Luckily I enjoy it and can live vicariously.

Good chat JimB, go Wildcats ;-)

              • +1

@TheZohan: Always good to chat to another basketball parent.

I also enjoy it but it does take up a lot time and driving around. My parents who have never had the time.

                • +2

@JimB: LOL same here. I never played rep basketball because by the time I made it, my parents said I couldn't do it as they didn't have time to drive me around town for games. Hence my vicarious living as I feel I missed out.

        • No in Vic size 5 for under 12s domestic bud. Just finished a rep and domestic season with my son. I also coach my daughters u12s team and they use size 5 for domestic.

          • @SonOfATightASS: Not all VIC leagues use size 5 for u12 and below.

Rep u12 in VIC use size 5.

There are still a few using size 6 at u10 and u12.
How its so inconsistant is crazy. Basketball VIC only have guidelines, they dont enforce domestic ball sizes

          • @SonOfATightASS: Ok. For my kids domestic league (MEBA/Nunawading) it’s size 6 for under 12.

Which league do you play at?

            • @JimB: I'm at Eagle Stadium in Wyndham (WBA). Interesting that your league hasn't aligned itself with Rep.

              • @SonOfATightASS: No for some reason.

They did however change the U10s from a size 6 to a 5.

        • Have they changed this in the past 10 years? I'm certain when I got to U14s Rep that we started using a size 7 ball.

          • @Locky1598: I think they made large changes about 2-3 years ago.

U14 Rep and Domestic in Victoria use size 6.

Boys U16 and above use size 7

I'm still looking for a decent outdoor ball that wouldn't cost me an arm, any suggestions?

    • I bought a molten D4000 outdoor before and while it feels good, but somehow that ball is heavier than other balls I've played and it hurts my game when I play with other balls

    • I’ve been using the Nike True Grip (pretty sure it’s this model), ans highly recommend it.

      • I can't seem to find it locally in Australia.

    • I have a BG3200 for outdoor play. Its not bad, however I am starting to see som fade after maybe a month of playing. Doesnt affect how it plays though. I'm going to buy the BG3800 to give a try

      • I think every indoor/outdoor ball will start to wear out when using it outside.

The better the ball for inside (softer feel) the faster it will wear when used outside.

Let us know how the BG3800 holds outside

  • Got the HR Series Handball $11.96 delivered

  • I don't know much about Molten balls, does anyone know which Molten indoor ball has good grip and feel similar to those of Spalding TF-1000?

    • The BG4500 is the highest level composite leather indoor basketball

      • OK thanks Madison-Team, good to know it's the highest level composite leather but is that translate to best "grip and feel" within the range? like Spalding TF-1000?

        • Yes, the BG4500 has the best level of grip and feel with Molten's range.

        • I saw NBL teams using only BG4500 for games and training. Indoor of coz.

          • @bluehj: You sure it was the Molten?

Molten hasn’t been used in NBL games for a looong time, well before the new BG series were released about 4-5 years ago.

In the past decade NBL went from Spalding to Wilson and back to Spalding.

            • +1

              @JimB: NBL1, excuse my typo.

  • can anyone recommend a decently priced ball pump?
