Wife said the same thing years ago when I bought it for just under $1,000.

I thought I had the last laugh until she commandeered it working for home.

  • +1

I thought $420 was like price of a 5 year old 'refurb'

    • It was $2170, now $2590. $420 is the amount of jacking.

      • Ahh ok I see. I thought people were getting god tier prices five years ago or something.

  • +11

Crazy price jack. Sitting on an older Aeron now. Have Steelcase leap at work. Would say Steelcase is more adjustable and comfortable and now offers much better value too. Would just wait for black friday deals on Steelcase website.

    • Are there retailers that stock steel series? they only deliver to syd or melbourne

  • +6

Is this really how much an aeron goes for now lol…
People should really turn to steelcase

  • +3

    Wow 2k for a Aeron

Until you get sciatica then you know $2K for this chair is nothing.

  • +11

Just wait for another startup to go bust and buy their old Aeron chairs.

    • +2

Literally what happened last year when most businesses had to close their offices due to covid/wfh and I somehow managed to snatch one for $50.

  • +1

Definitely worth giving it a shot before buying. i've got a bad back and this made it so uncomfortable I refunded it.

    • How many days/weeks did you use the chair for? What was your approach to recline on it?

      • I gave it 2 weeks to see how I would feel with it. Unfortunately I would get very sore and occasionally feel pain if I'm seated for 1-2 hours. Reclining is not an issue. I just followed the manual for the most ergonomic set up and did made adjustments here and there but didn't really help at all.

        • I've seen many reports that people get pain for the first couple of weeks and then their body adjusts and it turns in to the best chair they've ever had.

          But, fair enough.

          • @watwatwat: Yeah I'd rather not adjust to the pain. I have a metro buro chair and that doesn't hurt and gets the job done with posture and being able to be seated for long periods of time. I usually am able to mix it up with a sit/stand desk so that helps as well

      Look into sleeping upside down

  • +1

I would rather get a real gaming chair for that price

    • +1

      Shipping cost kills it

    • "Hip" startup I used to work for switched to gaming chairs (cause "they're fetch"). They were awful for working. The bottom was too big so there was always a huge gap behind your lower back. The headrest wasn't adjustable so you had to be the one height to fit. Was way too heavy to wheel around for talking to colleagues. The list goes on. It was funny the few old office chairs we had left became prized commodities after that.

      • Were they fully adjustable scorpion gaming chair units with overhead monitor mounts?

    • +1

Lol I opened it and seriously LOL

  • I'll be sure to buy this when I win the 160m powerball next week.

    • Buy the Herman Miller stock is better

  • Wow that's cheap.

These were just over $1k back when I bought mine, some serious gouging going on.

The 12 year warranty is a pile of crap. I had my lumbar support disintegrate at around the 10 year mark. Brought it in for repair and asked them to also address the sagged mesh and failing gas lift (70kg person, using it like someone who cares about their $1k chair). They flat out refused and now both are completely shot. Four figure chair destined for the bin.

Well to be fair, lots of things have changed in the past few years. AUD exchange rate, inflation, shipping costs exploded, etc.

Mine was 25 years old when the first thing failed - the mesh seat pan started to rip. To my surprise Living Edge could still source a replacement seat pan (about $200ish) for my 25-year-old chair which had undergone multiple changes since then.

      • +4

By that logic every other comparable imported product should also have increased in price by 150%. Nope, hence gouging.

I'm glad they were able to source parts for your chair. But refusing to do warranty repair on anything that's not completely broken, on a super premium product with a super premium price tag. That's a pile of crap, to be fair.

        • -2

By that logic every other comparable imported product should also have increased in price by 150%. Nope, hence gouging.

The chair costs US$1,320 in the US. Addding 9% sales tax makes it US$1438, which is AUD$2,282.42.

          Where is the gouge?

What was their reason for refusing the repair? Warranties typically don't cover wear and tear.

In any case spare parts are available, you don't have to bin the chair.

          • +8

@eug: I could never understand why people get hell bent on defending big businesses. They are not your friends.

A similar price gouge in the US makes no justification. Other chairs in the US and AUS using comparable materials/inputs/logistics did not go up by 150% in this time period. If they did we'd be paying $700 for Ikea and Officeworks chairs. The price is hugely inflated because it is a luxury good with poor price elasticity of demand and they can charge whatever they want aka gouging. Which is great and logical for them as a profit making entity but to run around defending it as a consumer is laughable.

They said they don't repair anything that's only partially broken. Is a crapping out gas lift wear and tear or a warranty matter? That's an arguement I'd expect from a Hyundai dealer, not when I've bought the Rolls Royce of chairs.

As for repairing the chair out of pocket. Giving more money to a company with poor warranty practices and doesn't stand behind their products makes no sense to me. Chair goes in the bin and I'll spend my money elsewhere.

              @bobjane:

I could never understand why people get hell bent on defending big businesses. They are not your friends.

You made a claim that a business (that I have never dealt with) is price-gouging. It's very easy for people online to throw claims around like that, so sometimes I get curious as to whether or not a claim is true or false, maybe even defamatory. There are plenty of instances where business have engaged in price gouging, but there are also plenty of instances where the cost of goods have simply gone up and they end up having to endure false accusations being thrown at them.

So I'd have a quick look online to check. And here we are.

A similar price gouge in the US makes no justification.

Price gouging is when a seller increases the prices of goods.

You claimed that there is some serious gouging going on here.

However it does look like the cost of the chair has simply gone up. This is the Amazon price history on camelx3. The lowest price was US$881 in 2018. You can see the price jumped to the highest ever at the start of COVID and is now currently US$1,750 for the adjustable-arms model. The standard model like the one here would probably be $13xx if Amazon had stock.

If the manufacturer raises prices, the seller will raise prices too. As you say, businesses are not your friends.

We will never know how much of the price rise is from the manufacturer and how much the seller has added on top of that, but comparing this price to the US price I'd say we're not doing too bad here price-wise given the circumstances.

Chair goes in the bin and I'll spend my money elsewhere.

That is extremely wasteful. Put it on fb/gumtree for free and someone will happily come take it off you and replace the gas lift and mesh.

              • @eug: You're doing a whole bunch of research and quoting Wikipedia in order to defend good friend Herman against defamation (your words not mine) and you're not even getting paid for it. Don't you see anything wrong with that?

Your counterpoint to my bad experience with their warranty is that they let you buy a spare part.

The fact that you've had a chair for 25 years means you should be past the kiddies fighting for the honor of their favourite cpu/gpu/fruit company.

                • @bobjane:

Don't you see anything wrong with that?

You made a claim, I was curious as to whether or not that claim was true so I looked into it instead of blindly believing everything I read on the internet. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Your counterpoint to my bad experience with their warranty is that they let you buy a spare part.

You're moving the goalposts. We were talking about your accusation that the seller is price-gouging.

My comment about my 25-year old chair was simply giving my experience regarding the chair's durability. Do note that I never mentioned anything at all about their warranty service - I only asked you what their reason for rejecting the warranty claim was.

Did you buy yours when they originally came out? I'm surprised the seat pan only gave way. The lumbar support was notorious for tearing at the grooves and it wasn't until 5-10 years ago that this was finally fixed.

In any case it's not surprising that replacement parts for the classic are still available, although during covid you would have had a hard time time getting any due to general supply chain issues. The classic is still pretty much the same, the only major difference is the new lumbar support (which can be retrofitted but I'm told the older version is actually better.)

        • Did you buy yours when they originally came out?

No, I bought mine used from an office that was either relocating or shutting down in 2011 for $270.

I'm surprised the seat pan only gave way.

Me too, I'm really surprised at how well it has done overall. I use it for many hours every day, including weekends.

The lumbar support was notorious for tearing at the grooves and it wasn't until 5-10 years ago that this was finally fixed.

Oh right, I found the lumbar support too "deep" so I removed it years ago.

In any case it's not surprising that replacement parts for the classic are still available, although during covid you would have had a hard time time getting any due to general supply chain issues.

I just checked, I ordered it from Living Edge in April 2021 and it arrived 8 days later. It cost $205. The stock must have been somewhere in Australia I guess.

I wonder what parts availability for other brands are like. That said, there probably aren't too many 25-year-old office chairs from other brands around.

    • +2

Hmm HM warranty service is normally excellent, I've had castors and lumbar pads replaced under warranty right up to the end of the 12 years, no questions asked, just send them a pic of the worn items. In any case a new pan and gas strut will fix your issues for a couple of hundred or so. If you want to bin it I'd happily come take it off your hands ;)

In any case $2.2/2.6k is an insane price (not in a good way). I would rather go steelcase.

  • cheapest buttlift I've ever seen

  • -1

Just because they decided to increase the price, doesn't make this a deal sorry.

  • +3

Better return on investment than my shares now haha

  • I joined the Ikea Markus fan club. Amazing chair after doing the easy mod of removing the lumbar padding.

  • Have to admit, that is one of the best chair I have ever sat in. My old work use to have that chair and my back never hurt and it had the right support. But man, for that price, nahhh I rather go to the physio haha.

  • The chair isn't on sale.. so how is it a deal?

  • +1

This "deal" demonstrates interest rates have a lot further to go up (and why inflation isn't only supply-side) …

  • +1

So it’s the standard price but you think it’s a bargain because it might go up in the future?

I miss when mods actually moderated deals.

    • -1

but you think it’s a bargain because it might go up in the future?

And yet the price went up $420 days later.

I miss when mods actually moderated deals.

And if they had removed it, no one would have got the opportunity to take advantage of the great deal I posted, which saved $420 on the current price.

  • +2

I had to sit down when I saw the price.

  • I'm gonna shill this chair that I bought at the start of covid 2020 which I can highly recommend https://www.sitbackandrelax.com.au/products/fursys-t50-air?_…
It's highly adjustable, all mesh just like the aeron. We have aerons at work and honestly I like this more as its less bulky. A poor man's aeron (but just as good)

  • Bargain , bought one just to sit in garage. Might even throw out my lounges and line these up in living room. Thanks op!

  • There's two Aerons on eBay I'm tossing up between, can I get some OzB' opinions?
Aeron 1 is approx $800, 4 years old and the seller has done less than 50 farts in it.
Aeron 2 is 2 years old but the seller estimates approx 2k+ farts, $900.
Which one to go for: Virtually fart-free 4 y/o or 2k farts on the clock but 2 y/o.

Aeron 1 user has also sold mountain bike equipment recently so seems fit and healthy, at least by their hobbies, where as the 2k+ fart chair owner has sold a few large jackets, suitable for a man of large stature, so the farts may indeed have been full-on. Both are local pickup so I might have to go and visit to check them out.

  • Bought three Steelcase leap chairs as second hand from a closed down office, 25 each. Won't be happier than that.

    • any cases still present in Syd

      • Perth. All 12 of them have gone

  • +1

    Not a deal

  • -1

    LOL!

Price is now $2,590.00, just days later.

So…. I was completely correct, then.

The chair isn't on sale.. so how is it a deal?

Well, it cost $2170 when I posted the deal and now it costs $2590.

  • +1

    Retailers cost price: $1554

    • How did you find this cost price?
