Samsung 9.1.4ch Soundbar HW-Q930B/XY $810, 11.1.4ch Q990B/XY $1290 + Delivery ($0 to Metro Areas) @ Appliance Central

850

In before the "9.1.4 ch lol" comments. Yes there are benefits of having separate stereo speakers but some also prefer the convenience and form factor offered by a soundbar + wireless satellites.

Been looking at this soundbar for a while and the price has finally dropped (cheapest ever on Ozbargain it seems)

2022 model from a brick n mortar store that ships to metro cities for free. I was able to price match this from JB to pick it up quicker.

Also on sale is their top of the range Q990B/XY 11.1.4 soundbar for $1290.

EDIT: Prices have further dropped a bit on each so have updated to reflect this

Bought the Q990B a few months back. Somehow for $1215 at JB. Highly recommend.

  • +4

    Highly recommend the Q990B

Got it for $1279 back in August

    • Me too…it is very good considering how compact a system it is.

  • +2

Is signal dropping for 990b no longer an issue now?

    • +2

Have yet to experience a dropout in the few months I have had mine.

    • +3

No issue with mine apart from within 10 minutes of first boot - I suspect it scans for a clear wireless channel and uses that from then on - pure speculation however.

      No dropouts since then.

One time my subwoofer was making an odd, constant sound which a simple turn of the woofer and back on (unplug) remedied.

      • You're correct in that it scans for clear(ish) wifi channels. There is also a method (that I can't remember, and probably varies a little from model to model) to force a rescan, so if you get sub/rear speaker dropouts, I recommend trying this, especially if you've just changed wifi, or moved house etc.

It's also the reason they were notoriously unreliable in retail stores (400+ wifi and bluetooth devices in range…)

    • I have used it almost everyday for the last 3 weeks and no drops

    • Never was an issue for me

    • +1

I had mine for over 3 months now and only a few dropouts on the first day. Fortunately, the connection has been rock solid since. Fantastic soundbar. Watching action movies with Dolby Atmos sound is freakin' out of this world. 10/10.

  • +3

Is the LED on the Q990B facing the front on these now, or do I still have to get off my ass, walk towards the unit and look at the top?

    • +3

      Front facing now.

    • +8

I used to think like that, and have a decent HTS. But then I got a Q950a for another room….

      • +6

Exactly, soundbars have come a long way, particularly when you spend a bit more over entry models. I've also got the Q950A and think it sound great (and yes, i'm a bit fussy about audio). Atmos is paricularly good (I've got a Google TV plugged into the HDMI port and all works well with HDMI ARC (and cec), the interface and experience is a lot better than the UI on my Android 4k TV (which also doesn't have Atmos).

These days it's more about the convenience and a more minimalist form factor. Not worth the effort with all the wiring, expensive interconnects and replacing your AV Receiver every few years when the codecs are out of date again. I did have a Sony QS series 5.1 and Denon 7.1 in the past but aren't interested in all that. Fair enough if you already have expensive speakers set up, but I would recommend a 2 CH setup for music anyway. Great having both - different setups for movies and music - I've got some monitors set up for that purpose. The soundbar may be alright for most people (very boomy and no obviously no where near as good but fine for youtube vids etc.

        • +1

So why would you have to replace your receiver for codecs but that's not a negative with soundbars?

How are they any different? If anything replacing only the receiver as opposed to the speakers as well is a plus….

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: True mate, guess I was talking about setting up initially.

The main takeaway is the expense and complicity - as I said, if you've already got all the speakers, cables, wires and space/layout then yes, it would be worthwhile upgrade receiver. Once you start looking at receivers the cost increases pretty fast, no point buying an entry level piece of junk. I've still got boxes of Magnat Vector Needles (german surround speakers) but sold everything else.

Atmos on the Q950 is very good though with the rear Atmos speakers - goes more than loud enough for an apartment.

          • @scuderiarmani: AV Receivers are great for connecting a brunch of stuff into but still aren't regarded good for music sound quality - integrated amp and or power amp is the go, so you'd really have to love movies to set an that stuff up.

        • +1

Completely agree. High end soundbars, especially the Samsung's with the rear speakers for physical 5.1 are on par with the best of the old HTS in a box types and offer a way cleaner setup that you don't have to worry about cables/kids etc and for reasonable pricing.

Sure a high end speaker set up can be superior, but realistically you'd have to be spending $3k+ at a minimum for noticeably better 5.1, more again for Atmos, and you'd really need a dedicated theatre room to get the most out of it. For a standard living room…taking into account sizing, angles, reflections off floor/wall/ceiling materials and straight up convenience have pretty well narrowed the real world gap for (high-end) Soundbars.

    • +11

      I thought this too… Until I got the q990. I'm converted.
The quality is unreal, and although dedicated speakers in key positions will always be better, for a 4 speaker system (bar, sub and 2 wireless surrounds), this thing rocks!!

    • Horses for courses. Yes a good quality 5.1 separates system will sound better, but really the difference is getting narrower every year.

      • +1

        Not for music.

      • Old-school..

How much is that. Which speakers and receiver?
        Does 5.1 support Dolby Atmos?

    • +1

Compare the cost (iincluding receiver), the size required and the actual fidelity. You might be surprised. I'm now a soundbar convert with my Q990B

    • +1

I suspect you have not heard the Q990B?
A friend has a good theatre system and was very surprised at how good this bar is.

    • +4

Converted from a full separate home theatre system to this….won't be going back 😁

    • +2

Yup, another sound bar convert. Have a dedicated Theatre at home, 4K projector, motorised screen, was with a 5.1 separates system with a Marantz receiver and Bowers and Wilkins speakers, so the whole hog (given the sound system predated Atmos), but ended up simplifying things to the LG/Meridian SN11RG Atmos setup and haven't looked back. Yes, a fully set up Atmos separates will edge it out, not doubt, but I can't believe the height and width it pumps out. Ended up buying a second system for the Living Room TV and just running it without the rear speakers.

    • -1

Fool. You know nothing about immense sound until you buy eleven of these and set them up as individual speakers and experience Atmos^11.

    • Have you actually heard this system? Real question. Have you listened to a film played on this system?

  • +6

Q930b owner here since July. Absolutely love it. Home theatre and music sounds amazing, have settings tweaked well, and Samsung s95b tv turns on sound game mode automatically when playing console.

    • I love mine too. Upgraded from a stereo sound bar and the Q930B is much better. The bounce-sound-off-the-walls-and-ceiling thing is bs but the sound fills the room and the rear speakers create a great surround sound experience.

      • Do a sound test for your front left and right speaker- close your eyes and point to where the sound comes from. In my use case, and tested with other people, you're pointing well left and right of the bar. That is the sound bouncing/echoing off walls. Same experience with my Yamaha YSP-2700 (2.1 soundbar). I don't know how you'd say it's BS, it's physics.

    • Does Q930b has calibration option? Also, I noticed the lip sync is not matching if sound comes via Q930b. If I disconnect the bar then no issues with lip sync. Any suggestions?

      • Is your tv hdmi e-arc compatible or just arc compatible? Earc does lip sync automatically. Your tv should have adjustment options if just arc.

Q930b has calibration in the SmartThings apps

      • The Samsung SmartThings app allows you to connect to the Q930b and configure various options. I occasionally have lip sync issues with content played from my Apple TV and the app let’s me set up to 350 ms audio delay.

  • +4

Waiting for the 990b to hit an ATL, closer to 1000 please

    • +4

It's $1,283 from TGGC if you have access

      • Showing up as 1247 plus 35 delivery for me. Need to work out if the height of either of these will allow it to sit in front of my LG C1 65" which is on the stand (not wall mounted). Does anyone have this combination?

        • +1

Yep, you're right. I was a dollar off. haha

        • +3

I have this combo. I sat my C1 on an ikea lack shelf (not mounted, just on top of the TV stand). The shelf and soundbar are about the same height, making the shelf almost invisible.

      • 1349 / 809 for the 990/930 (inc delivery) from the samsung gov store if anyone's interested and eligible.

  • +2

If any good for anyone I recently purchased the Q990B from the good guys.
Asked them to prove beat the good guys commercial and they sold it for $1250. Which I seem is a good enough price for this. Plus had some discounted gift cards which I used to pay for this. In the end saved some money. Now time to enjoy some quality sound.

    • Wow, that's great. I've been knocked back before.

    • Thats great. Whoch TGG store was this? I asked around afew stores myself only to be beaten back.

      • +1

        Canberra Belconnen store.

        • Good on you! I guess Sydney side stores aren't inthe mood, unfortunately for me.

          • @gopiatweb: Check the current deal going on for powerland.au on ebay.

You can even get it cheaper for around $1179.

            • @suku1809: Thanks mate! Will have a look at that. Cheers!

              • @gopiatweb: $1179 for targeted eBay users only, $1199 otherwise. Plus delivery if not in metro areas, $31.4 for me and $77 for someone in WA.

Depends on where you live you might find $1250 is cheaper if TGG is happy to price match themselves.

                • @davidl820: Yea, showing as$1199 for myself with free shipping as i reside in Metro Sydney. TGG would obviously be my prefernece, however they refusing to play the price-match game this time around. Thanks for this though!

  • Bose 900 vs samsung Q990b

    Any recommendations?

I love the look of Bose 900 however Q990b is very good value for money

    • -1

Bose if music is at all a priority.

      • Bose if only treble and bass is a priority:P
Haven't listened to their so soundbars but you're usually paying a premium for a more robotic sound over warm/smooth/musical etc.

Not hating, still got a SoundLink mini

        • I hated them before, also had a sound link mini. But their compact stuff and headphones are great.

As for soundbars, I haven't heard any readily available soundbars that compare for purely music. Got the 500 and 700 myself in extra rooms.

Te stereotypes don't apply to their soundbars. The subs are a little weak, have both models. But their midrange is actually quite nice and warm. Coming from someone with a tonne of experience with KEF products who are renowned for their warmth and mid range.

          • @scuderiarmani: Yeah they seem decent then in that case, I prefer natural balanced detailed sound these days, not harsh in ya face stuff.

Just that most people just want the most bass possible ha

            • @G-rig: The bass in my bedroom with the 500 sub is pitiful. Bottoms out very quickly. Room is around 5 by 3.5-4m.

In a slightly smaller normal bedroom the 700 system is a far better option.

Both have rears. Both are overkill for my needs though. But for background music, beautiful.

    • +1

For surround sound (Atmos or just plain 5.1), Samsung all the way with the physical rear speakers.

For music, Bose. (honourable mention to Sonos)

  • Just watched a YouTube review and they mentioned this soundbar isn’t as seamless with Sony tv’s?

Anyone with a Sony tv comment on that?

    • 100% vouch for 990b mated with a Sony display! Just remember to wire it up with HDMI eArc and you should be good!

    • I‘m using JBL with Sony TV. I have to say sony has lots of problem with sondbars.
If I turn on eARC, sometimes sony will lose sound output. Have to restart TV to get it recovered, very annoying.
My JBL soundbar works well with my Samsung TV.

      • I got issues with all LG and Sony TV's I've had as far as hdmi arc. It's great when it works…..

        Soundbars, receivers… Same same.

    • Must admit it's not 100% seamless with my A95k. It sometimes changes the audio connection output. I'd blame the TV over the soundbar. I suspect Sony's CEC is the problem as its flakey throughout (or of course the amount of things I have plugged into it doesn't help - I've also got a CEC remover widget going into my HDMI switch to fix problems to the dumber devices.

95% of the time it's a-ok however, or at worst I might toggle the sound output from TV to external and that fixes it.

Even for the missus if it goes wrong it just fails back to TV audio and she can barely notice the difference

      • I've got a similar thing sometimes (but with Eko 4k 65"). If i change to TV input then sometimes no sound through the sound bar, have to toggle the soundbar on/off or go back to HDMI input (Google TV 4k) then back to TV input.

For general tv viewing I just use the TVirl app - may have to sideload it but much better interface than my TV and faster, just no 4k I think.

  • +1

Can you add an extra subwoofer to these?

    • As with most if not all wireless soundbar solution's…no
Older wired sub solutions could have been possible.

To overcomplicate it you could get more subs by splitting the signal to two seperate devices one being this soundbar the other being a different receiver and sub setup… But, yuck.

  • Anyone paired the Q990 with a C2? Have a 65 arriving shortly.. Keen on the soundbar but unsure if theres enough clearance between the TV and bar.

    • +1

I sat my C1 on an ikea lack shelf (not mounted, just on top of the TV stand). The shelf and soundbar are about the same height, making the shelf almost invisible.

      • Is it stable and safe ? Mine too will be sittin on a TV unit. So something like this https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lack-wall-shelf-white-stained-o… ?

        How did you secure it?

        • +1

That's the shelf, yes (though I'm unsure which size variant I'm using). I have the 77 model TV. The shelf sits on the TV unit, and is not secured to it. The TV stand covers the shelf almost perfectly (slight overhang on the sides, but only a couple cm - not enough to concern me), and it's perfectly stable. I might be a bit less comfortable about it if I had small children or larger energetic dogs running around, but it works great and can't be seen from the front, unless you're standing up close.

          • @Pirateguybrush: Thank you for the detailed response. Yeah, kids may be an issue for me.If needed I may have to secure it into the TV unit.

    • +1

I built a riser from Ikea stuff initially but then ended up buying one of these:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/FITUEYES-Tabletop-Pedestal-Adjusta…

I was impressed and now have a floor standing one for my PC monitor, one for a TV in my spare room and a floor standing rolling one in the garage.

    • I have a C2 and Q990B, it fits perfectly, no riser needed.

The C2 stand sits a bit higher than the C1, so no need to rise it like C1 owners will.

  • Any recommendations for wireless rear speakers solution? I am keen to have front wired/stereo, open to explore atmos too.

Is this radio transmitter worth considering?
    https://www.amazon.com/Rocketfish-Wireless-Home-Theater-Spea…

Might chuck a pair of edifiers with it?

  • +1

Have had the 990 for a while now and it's amazing.
Having come from a full system to this I can't fault it, atmos is unreal. Have been playing a plagues tale and the surround sound is amazing, rain overhead, flies buzzing your head it really sounds like it's overhead.

Bass is weighty and vocals clear. Extremely happy with mine

    • Likewise, although my full system was older DTS HD style, still amazed the level of surround sound from a damn soundbar.

  • Old school here! Have an AV receiver with Nvidia, Nintendo and TV plugging into it. Planning to ditch my old full speaker system, will I still need the AV for switching between devices or is there a more elegant solution?

    • Depending on your TV, but this only has 1 hdmi input. Likely you'll be ok. Recent model TV with arc?

      • 10 year old TV, don't believe it has arc

        • In that case, you won't need it provided your TV has enough hdmi inputs for your Switch and Shield. Which should be fine…

You may be forced to use Optical connection though for audio depending on the TV.

    • I use one of these and it's been great - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07DQF543F/

  • Is the sub woofer on this any good though?

    • +3

      Yes

  • +2

Sub woofer is fine. My only gripe with this system is that there are no dedicated stands for the rear speakers that one can buy separately from Samsung. It's a maze trying to find one that suits the weight and dimensions of the rear speakers.

    • +2

      I got these for $40
      https://amzn.asia/d/gvzPlfM

They just about do the job, as long as you don't bump into them.

I have them on carpet and the stand leans forward a bit due to the weight, so I wedged a couple of foam pads under the front feet

      • That's exactly what I mean when I say there is not a dedicated stand for the speakers. I would love a stand specifically for the these speakers without having to f around with adding weights and foam. It's a premium price product therefore should have a stand as a accessory. Sonnen do this.

        • +1

I've got a q990b set - do you use the wallmount adapters or put it straight on? Would love a photo if you could be bothered. I'll probably pull the trigger when a free shipping deal happens
