Good computer for the price. Great screen and keyboard and should get great battery life a la the AMD chip. Only downside is that there seems to be an egregiously long waiting time until these things arrive, but if you're needing to buy something for next year back to school, this is a great option.

Can upgrade to a touch model of the same display for around $180 - that seems pretty expensive to me but may be important to some.

Its an edu store item, might need to log in.

  • That's some good specs…

I wonder if I should get this laptop or,

a cheaper Ideapad Slim 5 Pro for like $1200 and get a desktop gaming PC with a > RTX 3060 for around $1000+…

I'm not going to be gaming on the go.

    • Guess it depends how much you want to spend, if you want a proper gaming set up you're going to need the desktop + peripherals and gaming monitor, can add up to be a lot more overall

      • Yup, I've already got the ultrawide monitor and the peripherals. The RTX 3050 would probably be a bit too weak to drive it for any games so might stick with the el cheapo laptop and get a gaming PC.

    • Depends what games you want. Many intensive 3D titles wont do very well on a mobile 3050

I was thinking of getting myself the same laptop you're talking about, a Slim 5 Pro, and a gaming PC, but I soon realised I needed to buy a monitor too, which just adds to the cost. To be honest, I'm thinking about getting the Legion Slim 7 AMD version for uni next year, has a 6800S (which is 100W 3070 level card) and can be had on sale for as low as $2300. Sure, it's not the optimal setup, but nothing in life is, and it'd end up cheaper than the desktop + laptop combo, for me anyway.
Depends on your use cases, really, I need something that I can take with me wherever I go for long periods of time. There's no one-size-fits-all option

Just my two cents after having owned this laptop for roughly 2 months.

The integrated gpu is surprisingly powerful (albeit resolution lowered to somewhere in-between 1080 and 1440, forgot exact resolution), to the point where I've disabled the rtx 3050 in bios unless I need it one day for productivity related tasks. My main game is Lost Ark, and I'm not noticing much of a performance difference switching the gpus around (55fps vs 50fps integrated)

Battery is honestly a bit meh, lasts around 6 hours doing uni work. It's good, but not at the level of my old x1 carbon or what I'd expect from a laptop of this caliber, especially with the dedicated gpu disabled completely.

Laptop is really quiet during light tasks, but can get rather loud when gaming. I've found that light games (slay the spire, VBA emulations etc) doesn't cause the fans to kick in, haven't found the exact temperature in which it does. The sound isn't off putting or annoying, but definitely audible.

Keyboard is a hit or miss. I personally dislike it, the spacing and the low actuation has caused me to miss a lot of letters when typing - could entirely be cause I'm not quite used to it yet, although I will say I kinda miss the x1 carbon's keyboard.

Screen is great, extremely vibrant. Trackpad is large and accurate. Headphone jack is great! Weight is comfortable to be carried around all day in my bag.

Not a bad device by any means, just a few small issues and questionable design choices.

    • Wow, only 5 fps difference between iGPU and the dGPU is crazy.

      Is the iGPU the 680m?

yep thats the one, take that result with a grain of salt though, Lost ark is terribly optimised but it's been the thing I play the most, so haven't got too many points of reference.

      • iGPU is 20% slower than a mobile 1650. A 3050 will wreck it. I presume it has something to do with optimisation or maybe being CPU bound

    • That's the thing. I want something without the dGpu, but they're not really available yet.

  • anyone know how this compares to the 12th gen intel cpus?

Better than the i5-12500H, worse than the i7-12700H. Uses a LOT less power and is far more efficient though. I honestly cannot recommend any Intel chips in any laptops (in this very moment in time) unless your workflow primarily centers around using Thunderbolt, or you're going for the very high-spec CPUs. At that point, you might want Intel for the extra performance… but I personally say skip the laptop, and just go for a desktop that performs better at those kinds of prices. Not like the Intel laptops will be particularly portable with the quite low battery lives they get, anyway.

thanks - super helpful response ! take it that means the amd would translate to longer battery life

        • Yep, in most laptops that seems to be the general trend, especially in the upper tier ones.

  • OOS I want to say. Only available models left are the 7i Pro X range.
